SUBJECT: Report on Grand Opening Activities for the new Dublin Public
Library

FINANCIAL STATEMENT: $10,000 was allocated by the City for the Opening Day Ceremonies
of the Library in Dublin.
DESCRIPTION: With the pending completion of the new Dublin Public Library it is
appropriate to plan grand opening events for the public. Two events are recommended for the Grand
Opening of the new Dublin Public Library. The first event is the preview party planned by the Alameda
County Library Foundation approved by the City Council at the meeting o.f September 17, 2002. The
second event is a Grand Opening Celebration planned by the City of Dublin and the Alameda County
Library Staff. A summary of the two events follows.
PREVIEW PARTY
This upscale event is a fur~draiser for the Library Foundation planned for the Thursday prior to the Grand
Opening Day. This is a special "sneak peak" at the Library prior to it opening to the public. There will
alSo be live musical entertainment throughout the evening with an awards ceremony to honor the Dublin
Library Task Force, Dublin Friends of the Library and the City Council for their efforts in making the new
library a reality. The Preview party is from 7 - 10 p.m. and includes a silent auction with numerous items
to bid on such as a Fitness membership, tickets to the Wax Museum, a weekend cabin, original painting,
and several restaurant packages. The ticket prices for the champagne and hors d'oeuvres affaire are
$50.00 a person. A volunteer committee has been working to secure corporate sponsorships for the event.
Invitations will be sent to individual residences and foundation donors and the public is welcome to
attend. The money raised will be used to support programs and services at the Dublin library.
GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION
The second event is the Grand Opening Celebration free to the public on the Saturday following the
preview party. The Mayor, City Council and Library dignitaries are asked to do the honors of cutting the
ribbon at 10:00 a.m. followed by the doors opening to the public at 10:30 a.m. In addition to'the ribbon
cutting there will be a dedication of the plaque for the Library. The Library Staff will be offering tours of
the library as well ~s live demonstrations of the features and services available at the library, such as the

self check-out machines, story times, ADA equipment, and specialized databases. There will also be live
music in the Rotunda following the ribbon cutting, refreshments in the community room and clowns,
storytellers and jugglers in the children's section of the library throughout the day. In recognition of the
time capsule placed in front of the Library there will be a time capsule treasure hunt for the children. The
artists, Evans & Brown, Peter Mollica and Robert Ellison will be on hand for part of the day to answer any
questions regarding their individual art projects. Advertising for the event will be postcards and
invitations mailed to individuals and residences, the newspaper and flyers distributed throughout the
community.
Staff anticipates the week of February 17 having a firm date for the completion of construction and will
report back to City Council for its' approval of possible dates for both events.
RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that City Council receive the report and
provide input on the events planned.
