CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: April 1, 2003
SUBJECT: Dedication of Murray School Bell Tower

FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Sufficient funds are available in the FY 2002-2003 Heritage Center
Budget.
DESCRIPTION: As part of the Capital Improvement Program 2002-2007 the City
Council approved the construction of a duplicate of the original bell tower and bell replacement on the
Murray Schoolhouse located at the Dublin Heritage Center. The bell tower is complete and the Heritage
Center is now open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m.
As part of the reopening of the Heritage Center Staff recommends a dedication ceremony to ring the new
bell. The Mayor, City Council, and a representative from the Rotary Club, the Dublin/San Ramon
Women's Club and the Dublin Historical Preservation Association are asked to do the honor of the first
ringing of the new bell. A representative of each of these organizations has been contacted in regards to
the suggested date and time of the ceremony. The suggested date for the ceremony is May 1 st, Thursday at
6 p.m. at the Heritage Center.
In addition to the ringing of the bell there will be an unveiling of the plaque thanking all the community
groups along with the private donors that donated close to $30,000 to the City for the restoration of the
bell tower and replacement of the bell. Immediately following the ceremony there will be light
refreshments and a tour of the Agriculture exhibit on loan from the Museum of the San Ramon Valley
inside the gallery room in the museum.
RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the City Council approve the date and
time for the Dedication of the Murray School Bell Tower at the Heritage Center.
