Vice Mayor McCormick and Councilmember Oravetz serve as the Citizen & Organization of the Year Committee. Once nominations have been made, the Committee arranges for the judging to be done by individuals or organizations outside the City of Dublin. The winning organization will be announced at the City's "Volunteer Star Performers" event being held on Friday, October 11, 2002 at the Dublin Monarch Hotel. In addition, the winning organization's name will be engraved on the perpetual plaque, which hangs just inside the Council Chambers. The organizations nominated this year include: Dublin 4-H Club, Dublin High Irish Guard Band Boosters, Dublin Historical Preservation Association, Friends of the Dublin Library, and Tri-Valley Haven Representatives from each nominated organization have been invited to the October 1 l, 2002 recognition event. Staff recommends that the Mayor present each nominee with a Certificate of Recognition for being nominated as Dublin's 2002 Organization of the Year. NOMINATOR (IF DIFFERENT FROM CONTACT): PHONE NUMBER: BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION'S PURPOSE: 4-H is the youth organization of the University of California, Cooperative Extension. The purpose is to empower youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults. PLEASE DESCRIBE THE EVENT(S) THAT DIRECTLY BENEFITTED THE RESIDENTS OF DUBLIN DURING 2001-2002 (Our club year) (Attach additional sheet if necessary) Dublin 4-H Club is not a large group, yet we are enthusiastic and active and with the help of supportive parents, we have had at least one community service activity almost every month in the past year. Each 4-H club has two components - the "Club" and it's activities, and the "projects" (the individual learning groups) and their activities. The projects are led by volunteer leaders who bring their interests and expertise to the boys and girls. The 4-H youth development program provides opportunities, relationships and support for youth to help them acquire the life skills necessary to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood. 4-H uses experiential, research- based educational opportunities that help youth become competent, caring, confident, connected and contributing citizens of character. Some of our learning activities (projects) educated members in astronomy, photography, arts and crafts, camping and outdoor adventure, quilting, scrap booking, sewing, dog care and obedience, puppetry, citizenship, and leadership. Many of these will provide the members with skills they will use the rest of their lives, perhaps even give them a start in a career. Our members exhibited their accomplishments at the Alameda County Fair, and won many First Place ribbons. Club activities included emphasis on Community Service activities such as: (a) a food drive for the Open Heart Kitchen (b) purchased and put up red ribbons around the Dublin City Hall for Red Ribbon Week to remind everyone to be drug free. (c) helped with the Hope Hospice Tree Lighting Ceremony. ATTACHMENT 1 (d) assisted senior citizens and handicapped Dublin High students at the Target Senior Day - wrapping gifts, welcoming and assisting the shoppers, and helping with refreshments. (e) prepared and took Easter Baskets to a small senior citizen home with craft project members making special little treats. (f) provided "Spin Art" activities for children attending the Youth Care Saturday, at Shannon Center in addition to puppetry and bell performances. Our puppet team invited participation from the attending children and gave them an opportunity to perform and have fun in what could have been an uncomfortable environment for them. (g) participation in Dublin's St. Patrick's Day Parade with a float, (h) helped with the Dublin Fun Run as course monitors, and in the reception area. (g) cultivated the plant area in front of the church sign and planted flowers to beautify Resurrection Lutheran Church for their Easter Services. (h) made and decorated cookies for Kaleidoscope Learning Center for Valentine's Day then took them over there and helped with games and activities. (i) provided "4-H is Science" displays fbr the Frederiksen School Science Fair. They were also very active in 4-H sponsored activities: 1. They participated in 4-H Skit Night, in which the members write the skit and perform it along with other Alameda County 4-H members 2. Presentation Day, where members learn to give demonstrations, speeches, still display presentations, or do extemporaneous speeches. The skills of Presentation Day and other presentation activities during the year give the members self esteem and skills which they take back to their school activities and social lives. Gaining self esteem has been shown to help youth increase social maturity and stay away from harmful peer pressure. 3. Members made displays for Small Animal Field Day and Project Field Day 4. Participated in the County International Night and the County information Night, and the Alameda County Achievement Night. The Club has benefitted youth of Dublin through membership and learning activities but also through participation in Community Service. The puppet show at Youth Care Saturday entertained the attending young children but also presented edu-tainment in subjects such as crossing streets, teaming their address and phone number, and also being kind and accepting. Seniors have benefitted through our Target involvement, through our Hospice participation and Resurrection Lutheran flower planting. The environment has benefitted through the "Drains to the Bay" signs during Dublin Pride Week; Other residents of Dublin have benefitted through our Fun Run activities at St. Patrick's Day festivities; through the food collection program and Red Ribbon Week. The residents of the future have also benefitted through the education and training of these responsible citizens that were Dublin 4-H'ers. Therefore, i nominate Dublin 4-H to be Organization of the Year. To Whom It May Concern: I am writing on behalf of the Dublin High School Band Boosters, the other driving force of the DHS Band; the first being the music director, Lee Carpenter, of course! i am nominating the organization for Volunteer Organization of the Year. This organization is what makes it possible for the talented students of the band to do local, regional, state and international competitions. All the while, the students represent the City of Dublin and DHS with pride. The Boosters have made it possible for the band to represent the City and all the residents by supporting the music program. Because of the Boosters, the band over the last year has made it so the City is represented on a regular basis. Some of the ways the residents of Dublin have benefited by these hard working students with the Boosters helping each step of the way are: The band was the only one from California to attend the 60th anniversary of Pearl Harbor last November. The Boosters made it possible for this once in a lifetime experience for the students and adults as well Because of a friendship started in March of 2000 when the DHS Band represented Dublin, CA in the 2000 Dublin, Ireland St. Patrick's International Parade, they met the Sanyo Marching Band and Baton Team from Hiroshima, Japan who performed this past year in our own hometown parade. The Boosters help arrange home stays for all of the Japan students Each year the Band, Color Guard and Winterguard programs travel locally and statewide to perform and show other cities what the young adults of our commtmity are capable of creating. The Boosters provide transportation, equipment, food, uniforms, instruments, scholarships, etc. for the students who perform. The Boosters helped to get the equipment over to City Hall last May to have the band play at the raising of the World'Trade Center flag The hard working adults of this organization spend 12 months a year working various fundraisers to offset the expenses of the Band and Guard members. Without the Boosters, there would be no marching band for the residents of Dublin to enjoy each year in our own parade, and no music program The DHS Band Boosters is an organization that puts the students first. I can honestly say that without this group of adults, the City of Dublin would not have the band to look forward to each St. Patrick's parade and the rest of the year. Students would not be able to enjoy the art of making music and being able to show "Dublin Pride" in other cities. Through the years I have volunteered my time with many organizations, and been on board positions with many. This is the first organization I have personally dealt with that works non-stop all year long for the betterment of the participants. The adults are not in it for themselves, but for the students. Please understand that although I hold a position with this group, I do not write this for your consideration due to my ties with the Boosters. I've wanted to do this for them the last few years. In that respect it shall cooperate and work with public officials, schools, agencies, organizations and other public and private bodies or groups towards those goals." D.H.P.A. is about to complete a most fruitful year. Working in unison with Dublin Rotary and the City of Dublin, a dream held by many Dublin residents and history buffs is about to come tree. It has been a long stated goal of our community to replace the bell tower which once stood atop the Old Murray School. For many, this restoration has become a long and weary process. D.H.P.A. has worked with individuals and businesses locally to fundraise for this project. The Board of Directors and active members have generated a total of $15,000.00 towards the restorative efforts for Murray School. The bell tower restoration will be complete by December of 2002. D.H.P.A. has also worked with the Dublin High School leadership program to develop a series of newspaper scrapbooks dating back some 20 years. Developing a sense of importance for being "keepers of the record" has been an important goal of D.H.P.A. InVolving youth in this project will build a better £umre for the history of our community. D.H.P.A. continues to offer costumed docent tours of the Heritage Center for students of history both young and old. D.H.P.A. is currently working with E Clampus Vires to place historical monuments at sites of importance in our Valley. They are currently working on the placement of a monument for the old Fallon house which used to stand on acreage now a part of Stoneridge Mall. This year D.H.P.A. came to the aid of the Camp Parks and Camp Shoemaker History Center. This museum will now operate under the auspices of D.H.P.A. Considerable time and effort will be spent preserving the history of the military base located in the heart of our community. D.H.P.A. recently sponsored a Trivia Toumement at Day on the Glen, a community celebration. Their goal was to make Dublin history as entertaining and easy to remember as other trivia tidbits. For these reasons, and probably many more, I feel that the Dublin Historical Preservation Association has directly benefited the residents of Dublin and deserves to be recognized as Dublin's Organization of' the Year. PLEASE DESCRIBE THE EVENT(S) THAT DIRECTLY BENEFITED THE RESIDENTS OF DUBLIN DURING THE PAST YEAR (Attach additional sheet if necessary) During 2002, Friends of the Dublin Library provided two Book Sales to the community as a way of fund raising as well as recycling books of all interests. Books are offered continuously at bargain prices to the community in the Library lobby and at Starbucks. Books are gathered through community donations, sorted, orgamzed and offered for sale by a tireless group of volunteers. These funds are then used to provide programs that reach beyond the budget of the Library such as the May Author's Night, giving the commumty an opportumty to meet and interact with Penny Warner, Cara Black and Claudia McCormick. Many Children's programs are supported by the funds raised by Friends. Some of those provided during 2002 include Python Ron with his snakes and arachnids, and Helane Zeiger with her mTmzing yo-yo tricks. The Friends sponsored the Dublin Library's Newcott- Caldebery Awards Ceremony through the provision of awards and refreshments. The bi- annual newsletters provided by the Friends inform citizens of specific upcoming Library activities and often call attention to legislative action that will affect the Library and it's programs. The Newsletters are designed to keep community members informed about all that's important to the Dublin Library as well as provide information from Library staff. Friends meet monthly in order to provide additional support requested by the Branch Manager and other Library staff. Volunteers are mustered for support in projects such as identi~ing books and circulation information from massive lists to be used for purchasing materials by staff for the "new" Dublin Library. These same volunteers will be available to assist in the rnove from the old facility to the new. The Friends are proud to support the activities and programs at the Library and look forward to continuing a strong relationship with Library staff, patrons and residents of Dublin. 2002 CiTY OF DUBLI. PLEASE DESCRIBE THE EVENT(S) THAT DIRECTLY BENEFITED THE RES/DENTS OF DUBLIN DURING THE PAST YEAR, Collected, sorted, categorized, warehoused and safeguarded thousands of donated books, computer hardware & software and other literary objects to be sold and/or otherwise made available to the citizens of Dublin. Used monies from the bi-annual used book sales and the continuous sales with on-site "honor system" bookcases located in the library and the Starbucks Coffee establishment in Dublin to: · Fund supplies, speakers and performers for various children's programs throughout the year. ° Fund supplies and instructors for children's programs for Valentine's Day and Halloween arts and crafts projects. · Fund speakers and paraphernalia for adult literature seminars & lectures and for special interest groups. · Provide the library with sought-after supplies and objects, e.g. a large world globe map, etc. that were not available through normal procurement channels. PM EILEEN ~ARR 92582889?8 P.02 Although the TN-Valley Haven is physically located in Livermore, for the past 25 years, it has provided vital services to residents throughout all of the Tri-Valley area, The Haven offers a 24-hour crisis line that ia always answered by someone who has completed an extensive training program that meets the standards set by Its Office of Criminal Justice Planning for domestic violence end sexual assault counselors. The 8halter is in an unmarked location to help provide a safe place for women and children escaping domestic violence. The two residential shelters provide counseling, support, information and advocacy necessary to help these women and children begin their moovery from the effects of domestic violence. Women also receive help finding affordable housing, job training, public assistance and medical care. The Haven works proactively in the community m end domestic violence and sexual assault by building relations with law enforcement, bcal government, schools and olher agencies. Staff offers presentations b students, as well as seE-defense and personal safety classes for all ages. Dublin High School hosts the Christmas fundralser, "the Gingerbread Project" each year and numerous citizens and organizations donate their tlme. Haven personnel work closely with local polk~ departments, Two legal clinics are offered each week in locations In the Valley to provide restraining orders o~ other legal services for Valley residents. The Haven also offers a rape crisis center and was one of the agencies that was instrumental in bdnging the Sexual ,assault Response Team to Valley Care Hospital in Pleasanton. Rape victims are now treated at a local facility rather than having to travel to Highland Hospital in Oakland. Over the past year, the Haven expanded its mission ID Include homeless services. In August 2001, it assumed coordination of a weekly mobile clinic, the HOPE van. Between September 2002 and February 2002, this van provided medical, mental health and case management services to 154 individuals and families. In February 20(]2, the Haven began operating a food pan~ that serves more than 800 people each month. Work is underway to open a shelter for homeless families. It is anticipat~l that there are at least 300 homeless people in the Valley on any given night. Valley Community Health closed tls Family Crisis Shelter last November due to financial problems. In response, the Haven began working with local churches and communities ID provide housing for hometess families through lhe holiday season, which continued for eight weeks Into the New Year. The Haven Is werklng ,,vith local cities and Nameda County to renovate the shelter building, This service is essential, because it Is the only she~r in Eastern Alameda County that accepts two-parent families and single men with children, Uke victims of domestic vidence and sexual assault, displaced people in crisis need more than a place i~ stay. The Haven currently provides a comprehensive program of individual and group counseling, advocates lo work with families to meet their specific needs, as well as education groups. A simile' program is being developed for the homeless shelter, tailored to the issues and concerns of homeless clients. The Td-Valley Haven has provided shelter, advocacy and a wide range of services to residents throughout our Valley for the past twenty-five years. The Haven Is enlarging its mission by adding the food pantry and services Io assist homeless families in our communities. I truly believe that the Tri-Valley Haven should be recognized as Dublin's organization of the year. Many Dublin residents have benefited by the valuable services provided by the TrPValley Haven.
