RECOMMENDATI~.~~ Authorize Staff to solicit bids for Contract 02,18
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: The construction budget for this project is $132,300, of which
$22,400 is reimbursable by a grant from the California Energy

DESCRIPTION: At the October 1st meeting, the City Council approved an agreement
with the California Energy Commission regarding the grant funds for the traffic signal battery backup
systems (BBS) project.
Traffic signal battery backups are a safety feature proposed for eight of the City's more heavily traveled
intersections. These units will allow the intersections to continue to operate for approximately two hours
in the event of a poWer failUre.
The eight intersections proposed to receive BBS units at this time are:
Dublin Boulevard/San Ramon Road
Dublin Boulevard/Regional Street
Dublin Boulevard/Village Parkway
Dublin Boulevard/Dougherty Road
Hacienda Drive/Hacienda Crossings
Dublin Boulevard/Tassajara Road
Amador Valley Boulevard/San Ramon Road
Amador Valley Boulevard/Village Parkway

The existing BBS at Dublin Boulevard/Hacienda Drive currently operates in flashing red mode and
is proposed to be converted to full operation. The project further includes conversion of all yellow
indications and the "walk" portion of pedestrian signals at these intersections to LED (light emitting
diode), as well as provision of LED "bulbs" for the "programmed visibility" or "PV" signal heads which
are intended to be seen only from specific lanes.
Staff is also including the "countdown" type of pedestrian signal at the Dublin Boulevard/Village Parkway
intersection. This type of pedestrian signal displays the number of seconds remaining to cross the street.
This particular item is budgeted in the Signal and Lighting Operating Budget as a test, and if successful,
may be proposed for other locations in the future.
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize solicitation of bids for Contract 02-18, Traffic Signal
Battery Backup Systems.
