Report on Dublin Pride Week Activities and Acceptance of Gifts to the
City

RECOMMENDATION: 1)
Receive Dublin Pride Week Activities Report
Accept gifts from Livermore-Dublin Disposal, Tri-Valley Herald,
Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Target, and direct staff to
prepare formal acknowledgement.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
Sufficient funds are included in the Fiscal Year 2000-2001 Budget. It is
estimated that the City will contribute $5,525, Livermore-Dublin
Disposal will donate $3,025 for school giveaways, Dublin Chamber of
Commerce will donate $1,000 for banners, Target will donate $200 in
gift certificates and the Tri-Valley Herald will contribute a variety of
advertising and promotional services valued at $8,600.
DESCRIPTION:
Dublin Pride Week is an annual event, which seeks to promote a positive image for the City of Dublin.
The goal is to seek ways in which individuals or groups can act to improve the community. This year' s
theme is "Planting the Seeds for our Growing Community" to encourage residents to take steps that will
influence Dublin's future in a positive way.
This year, Dublin Pride Week is scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 2Ft, and will conclude on
Saturday, April 28% Traditionally Pride Week has been scheduled to coincide with St. Patrick' s Day in
mid March. This year however, the event has been moved to the end of April for the following reasons:

· The City has wanted to do a Creek clean-up during Dublin Pride Week in prior years but has been'
unable to do so because of water levels in the creek. The new dates will allow the City to organize a
Dublin Pride Week creek clean-up this year.
· Many of the Pride Week events are related to Earth Day events. Pride Week 2001 is scheduled around
Earth Day, April 22"d to take advantage of these shared goals.
· The new dates will help distinguish Dublin Pride Week from other City and School events
· The Council requested that the Fail speciai clean-up be moved from September to October. This
change resulted in the other clean-up dates being moved from March to April and from June to July.
The clean-up is an important part of Dublin Pride Week.
Livermore-Dublin Disposai's (LDD) first special clean-up for the year will take place between April 2nd-
20too During the clean-up, Dublin households can dispose of up to three cubic yards of refuse at no
additional charge. Residents will be encouraged to clean up their own properties as part of the Dublin
Pride Week activities. In addition LDD has offered to donate "handy hauler" waste containers to groups or
individuals participating in City-approved clean-up projects.
A committee comprised of representatives from City Staff, the City Council, Dublin Unified School
District,. Livermore-Dublin Disposal, the Tri Valley Herald and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce has
met four times and has developed a plan to implement the following goais:
Continue to Expand Community Awareness of Dublin Pride Week: · Promotionai posters will be distributed to area businesses by Dublin Police and the Dublin
Chamber of Commerce (designed and printed by Tri-Vailey Heraid).
· Press releases will be sent to area newspapers, and PSA's to radio stations.
· Newspaper ads announcing the event will run in the Tri-Vailey Herald (donated).
· Announcements will appear in school newsletters and on reader boards.
· Announcements will appear on Channel 30.
· 20 Dublin Pride Week Banners will be flown throughout the City cost (cost shared with Dublin
Chamber of Commerce).
· Dublin Pride Week Banner will be flown over San Ramon Road.
Involve City School Children in Dublin Pride Activities:
· "Dublin Pride" promotional items will be given to each child that attends school in Dublin.
Wildflower seed packets will be distributed to all children to either plant at home or a designated
school planting area. Additionally, ,Earth Care" educational coloring and activity books will be
given to grades K-3 and earth stress-bail key chains will bc given to grades 4-12.
· The City will sponsor a Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest for grades K-12.
)~ All participants will receive a certificate of appreciation;
> Winners at each grade level will receive Target gift certificates (donated directly by
Livermore-Dublin Disposal and Target);
>Winning entries of contest will bc displayed at Civic Center;
>Contest winners will be printed in the Tri-Vallcy Herald (donated).
· Schools will be encouraged to participate in a school beautification competition.
> Participating schools will organize a clean-up or beautification project with the winning school
receiving a perpetuai award plaque that will indicate the school and year.
> Each year, schools will compete for the perpetual plaque.
· School classes and groups are encouraged to participate in a "Make a Difference in Dublin"
project.
Encourage "Make a Difference in Dublin" Community Improvement Projects:
· Individuals, classes, groups, and businesses are encouraged to "Make a Difference in Dublin" by
donating their time to community-improvement projects.
· Letters were sent to community organizations asking for assistance with a list of community
projects, including a creek dean-up, beautification projects at the Heritage Center, and Easter
Seals Kaleidoscope Activity Center, assisting seniors with projects around the house/yard and
painting "Drains to Bay" on City storm drains.
· To date the following organizations have volunteered to participate in the "Make a Difference in
Dublin" projects: Dublin 4-H, Rotary Club, St Raymond Church, Dublin High School Leadership
Class and Leo Club, Dublin Lion's Club and Dublin Women's Club.
· The Tri-Valley Herald will join with the City to present an award to an outstanding project.
· Participants will be acknowledged at a City Council meeting.

Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the Council receive the Report on Dublin Pride Week activities and accept gifts
from Livermore-Dublin Disposal, Target, the Tri-Valley Herald and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce,
and direct staff to formally acknowledge their support of Dublin Pride Week and their generous donations.

Dear Jason:
Here's the plan for the City of Dublin-Tri-Valley Herald partnership on 2001 Dublin
Pride Week. We're delighted to again sponsor this event.
The Tri-Valley Herald will:
* Publish both the winning essay(s) and posters in a house ad in the paper· We
will devote half-page to this promotion.
* Design a poster for the 2001 contest, using the winner from the 2000 contest as
a base. We will print 200 to 500 full-color posters, depending upon how many the
committee would like (the cost is very similar for 200 or 500).
* Design and publish 6 3xl 0 house ads promoting the event and encouraging
participation.
* Join with the city to present an award, should the committee desire, to
outstanding clean-up projects.
VALUE: $8,850
In return, the committee will:
* Designate the Herald as the presenting sponsor and the exclusive print media
sponsor of Dublin Pride Week·
* Fly five Herald banners at suitable locations. Herald logo will be prominently
displayed on Dublin Pride Week banner flown over San Ramon Valley Boulevard·
* Include Herald logo/banner on Dublin Pride Week parade entry.
* Give .Herald the greatest share of any print advertising budget.
* Include Herald logo on any promotional item(s).
* Give Herald first right of refusal for 2002 celebration·
* Contribute $250 toward printing of poster.

Dublin Pride Week Celebration
Livermore Dublin Disposal is pleased once again to participate in the Dublin Pride Week
Celebration.
Sheila Fagliano, Recycling Manager for Livermore Dublin Disposal, is on the Dublin
Pride Week Committee and will be in charge of awarding each child who participates in
the Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest with a "Certificate of Merit for Participating".
Livermore Dublin Disposal will provide all of the paper, presentation folders and
certificates. Sheila is also responsible for the research, purchasing and distribution of the
Dublin Pride Week giveaways. The Dublin Pride Week giveaways are coloring books
for grades K-3, globe key chains for grades 4-12, and every student will receive a packet
ofwildflower seeds to plant.
Livermore Dublin Disposal is committing $3,025.00 towards the Dublin Pride Week
Celebration. These monies are to be used toward the environmental awareness program
and to purchase gift certificates, for Dublin School students, from Target for the Dublin
Pride Week Poster Contest Winners. The winners of the Dublin Poster Contest will
receive their awards at a ceremony being held at Shannon Park on Saturday, April 28,
2001, at the kickoffof"Make a Difference Day in Dublin Clean up Project". A City
Councilmember will present the awards.
Livermore Dublin Disposal will provide Handy Haulers to nonprofit organizations that
will sponsor a specific project to help clean up the Dublin Community and is approved by
the City of Dublin.
Sheila Fagliano, Jason Behrmarm, Nancy Feeley, Patti Anderson, Vanessa Moore, and
the City Staff have been working together to provide the best Dublin Pride Week
Celebration possible.
