CITY OF DUBLIN
CALIFORNIA
WHEREAS, the Tri-Valley Unit of the American Cancer Society proudlypresented the 4~h Annual ':Relay for Life" on June 9'~ and
10~ at Dublin High School, designed not only to raise money and awareness, but to remember lost struggles and celebrate with those
who are winning the battle against cancer; and
WHEREAS, more than 1, 221, 800 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year in the United States alone; and
WHEREAS, this year's 24-hour Dublin Relay for Life was an effective way for the American Cancer Society to unite more than 400
members of our community in an atmosphere of good sportsmanship; and
WHEREAS, the participants in this year's Relay for Life raised over $90,000 to support the American Cancer Society's dedication to
preventing cancer and saving lives from cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient services; and
WHEREAS, the Relay for Life Luminary Ceremony was held as a tribute in honor or memory of those whose lives have been touched
by cancer; and
WHEREAS, the tremendous job of organizing this year's Relay for Life was coordinated by Dublin Police Services along with many
members of City of Dublin Staff, including key leaders Gary Thuman, Albert Chavarria, Sr., Katie Mooney, Gaylene Burkett and
Vivian Lau, and such distinguished and committed service toward promoting cancer awareness should.not go unrecognized by the
City of Dublin.
NO W, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Dublin City Council would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the leaders,
participants and sponsors who took part in the 2001 American Cancer Society "Relay for Life" in the City of Dublin, and encourages
all citizens to educate themselves about cancer, remember someone in their life who has been touched by this disease and support such a
worthy cause.
