Below is a summary of the programs offered by the Recreation Department during the Winter quarter of 1990 which encompassed the months of January, February and March. Afterschool Recreation Program This program continues to be well received by the community and schools. The average daily attendance at the Murray School site is 25 and 50 at the Nielsen School site. Both sites participated in the Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Recreation Leaders sponsored a face painting booth at the celebration held at the Dublin Civic Center. Staffing for the program has been a major problem this year with frequent turnover in staff. This has impacted the Department as the Recreation Supervisor has had to substitute at each site on numerous occasions. Leisure Enrichment Classes Classes for preschool age children were once again one of the most popular areas of our program. "Sing-Along-Time", "Time for Two's" and "Bumper Bowl" continue to fill quickly. For school age children, "Karate" is still very popular. The "Introduction to Keyboard" class was well received with "11" participants enrolled. Seventy-six percent of the children's classes were conducted during the Winter quarter. Overall, the teen classes and excursions didn't receive much support. Of the three ski trips offered, only one had sufficient enrollment to conduct the activity. Twenty-two Dublin teens participated in the ski trip to Kirkwood. The "Basic Financial Planning" class is always very popular this time of year. Twenty people took advantage of this program during the Winter quarter. Enrollment increased in both "Dog Obedience" and "Drawing". "Valentine Truffles" was another popular class. Only 39~ of the teen/adult classes were conducted this quarter. This is down considerably from previous quarters. For some reason, craft classes which have generally benerated good participation didn't fare as well this time. PrACrhnnl All three preschool classes reached their maximum enrollment of 20 students per class for the second session. In addition to daily activities, the classes made Presidents pudding to commemorate the birthdays of Lincoln and Washington, exchanged Valentines at their Annual Valentines Day party and went on a leprechaun hunt for St. Patrick's Day. Field trips to the Dublin Library and the F.ire Station were also conducted. Senior Center The Center continues to see new Education Classes resumed and The special event for the month entertainment and hula dancing. luncheon. The American Association of Retired Persons sponsored a"Mature Driver Workshop" and Senior Support Programs sponsored a workshop entitled "Medicare and You". The featured pharmacist for this workshop was Mayor Paul Moffatt. The Valentines Lunch was well attended with "68" in attendance. Average daily attendance for February was "60" and "149" volunteer hours were logged. A self-help "Massage Workshop" was held in March and a trip was taken to the Napa Valley to ride the_ Napa Wine Tra.in. Both were well attended. To commemorate St. Patrick`s Day the Center had a brunch complete with corned- beef sandwiches,. Sixty seniors were in attendance at the lunch and entertainment was provided by a standup comedian. Average daily attendance for March was "59" and "147" volunteer hours were logged. Senior Exercise taught by Bonnie Leonard showed a significant increase in attendance during the Winter quarter. Raleys Stores are now contributing day-old produc~ and baked goods to the Center three days per week. The items are picked up by volunteers and utilized for the meals program and distributed to Senior Center participants. Special Events Hoov-'d-do! The Fifth Annual "Hoop-d'-do" was held at the Dublin High School .oym on Saturday, January 27. The "Hoop-d'-do" is a basketball skills competition for boys and girls ages 9-18. The competition consists of three skill stations: timed dribble, shoot-around and-free-throw shooting. Participants rotate through the stations twice. Winners were determined by totalling the best score from each skill station. Basketballs were awarded to the winner of each age/sex category. This activity has never had big participation. Each year it gets smaller. We tried to reschedule the event during basketball season when interest in the sport would naturally be higher. It continues to be poorly received. It is staff's recommendation that this event be deleted due to poor response and inefficient use of staff time. St. Patrick's Dav Celebration The sun shined on this years celebration held in the plaza at the Dublin Civic Center. Local community groups sponsored twenty-one booths offering information, food and games. Entertainment was extremely popular and included dance groups, a juggler, a magician, singing groups and class demonstrations. Over 1,000 people attended this annual event. Sports Adult Volleyball Leagues were off~red in cooperation with Livermore and Pleasanton with games played at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. This is the third year that the three agencies have worked cooperatively on this program. Staff began plans for Adult Softball Leagues and tremendous interest was shown by the community. Spring leagues are scheduled to begin in April and a full report will be included in the Spring Recreation Report. Teens The noon-time programs at the middle and high schools continue to be well received by the students. Two of the thr~e ski trips offered this Winter were cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. These trips were co- sponsored by the Recreation Departments in San Ramon and Livermore and all three agencies had limited sign-ups. "Lets Make A Date" was sponsored by the three departments and Viacom and was a tremendous success. The event was held at the Pleasanton Holiday Inn and attracted "103" participants. Attached in Exhibits A, B, C and D are enrollment statistics for the Winter quarter.
