DESCRIPTION For the last six years, the City of Dublin has
commemorated. . St..., .Patrick's, ..Day _ with..._:a., : :•;parade'.::.,.;and ,. community,
celebration. The parade, sponsored by the Dublin-San Ramon Lions =,
Club, typically utilizes..a: r.o.ute,-.,through the,:,downtown.. areao.f _Dublin: -. ::.,.
The community celebration, coordinated by the City's Recreation
Department, features food, game and information booths operated by
local service clubs and non-profit organizations, as well as a variety
of entertainment. Through the years, the parade route and location of
the celebration has changed, but the scope of the event has remained
fairly constant.
The Dublin Chamber of Commerce, in an effort to promote the businesses
in Dublin, has proposed that the City and the Chamber work
cooperatively to expand the scope of the St. Patrick's Day Celebration
to include the business community. The proposed expansion would
entail relocating the community celebration to the downtown area,
utilizing the Dublin Place Shopping Center, and inviting . the
businesses to participate by operating booths and allowing "sidewalk
sales" . Businesses would be encouraged to offer "St. Patrick's Day"
promotions and participate in special advertising supplements.
Additionally, it has been suggested that a professional arts and
crafts show and sale be included in the event.
Given the limited time frame (three months) with which to coordinate
an expanded St. Patrick's Day Celebration, commitment by the Chamber
of Commerce and the business community is essential. If the City
Council is in favor of pursuing this option, Staff will need to
determine early on whether the support of the business community is
forthcoming. However, preliminary meetings with Chamber
representatives indicate that the Chamber Board of Directors are
supportive as are the merchants in the Dublin Place Shopping Center.
An organizational meeting will be held pending Council approval to
establish the scope of the event as well as delineate
responsibilities.
It should be noted that the City's Parks and Recreation Commission has
not yet had an opportunity to comment on this proposal due to the
timing with which the proposal was received. However the Commission
will be discussing the St. Patrick's Day Celebration at their meeting
of December 11, 1990.
Therefore it is recommended that the City Council consider working
with the Chamber of Commerce to expand the scope of the St. Patrick's
Day Celebration.
