As explained in the attached correspondence from Executive Director Jan Parker, the general format for the event will be based on the experiences of Hospices throughout the country whereby a designated tree is decorated with bulbs either in memory or honor of friends and loved ones. The Tree of Life is dedicated to those who will always be eternal lights in the lives, hearts and memories of the donor. Hope Hospice has indicated that the tree should be located in an area that is fairly visible to the community and, ideally, have adequate space available for a tree lighting ceremony. Staff recommends that Hope Hospice be granted permission to utilize the evergreen tree planted by the City in 1984 at the Dublin Library. Although the library was the original site for the City's Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, in recent years the ceremony has been relocated to the Dublin Civic Center. Hence the Civic Center has become the focus of the City's holiday decorations. Staff discussed the suggested location with representatives from Hope Hospice and the Dublin Library, and both groups are agreeable to this site. Additionally, as this site already has electrical power to the tree, the initial financial outlay to Hope Hospice will be reduced. The annual cost to the City to install the lights on the tree is approximately $440 . 00. Consequently, the City will be able to reduce expenditures by this amount if Hope Hospice has responsibility for decorating the tree. It is therefore recommended that the City Council grant permission to Hope Hospice to utilize the tree at the Dublin Library for the "Light Up a Life" event. ---------- ---------------------------------------------------------- ITEM NO. Though this would be a first for HOPE HOSPICE, our general format will be based on the experiences of Hospices throughout the country. A designated tree is decorated with bulbs either in memory or honor of friends and loved ones . The Tree of Life is dedicated to those who will always be eternal lights in our lives , in our hearts , and in our memories . A donation to Hospice will light a bulb; an acknowledgement is available to be sent to whomever the donor designates , and the person' s name is inscribed in the Tree of Life Memory Book. A tree lighting ceremony takes place (usually toward the end of November) inviting the community to join together in a festive, heartwarming evening. Local participants provide music and refreshments . This event would be a wonderful opportunity for the local community to join together in an uplifting celebration. Perhaps we could include special mention of veterans from the various world conflicts . After your response specifying the site of the tree, we will form a committee to plan specific details . Sincerely, '-Jan Parker Executive Director JP/gjc
