HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 5.2 DFA Book Exhibition at Civic Center (2) CITY OF DUBLIN AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: July 22, 1991 SUBJECT: Written Communication: Request by Fine Arts Foundation for Exhibition at Civic Center: "The Fine Art of Books" (�y(Prepared by: Paul S. Rankin, Assistant City Manager) EXHIBITS ATTACHED: Letter dated July 15, 1991 from Lynne Baer, DFA Executive Director RECOMMENDATION: 1 ) Approve the request for the 2 month exhibition and use of the Regional Meeting Room. 2) Authorize extension of City's Insurance Coverage provided the value of the display does not exceed $10,000. FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Only direct cost to the City would be in the event that a loss occurred and payment was required from the City's deductible. DESCRIPTION: The Dublin Fine Arts Foundation has requested the use of lobby space to present their first exhibition, titled "The Fine Art of Books." In addition, the exhibit would include a program in the Regional Meeting Room where experts in the field would discuss the creative process associated with the books on display. DFA has obtained display cases through contributions from the business sector. It is their intent to stage the exhibit in their display cases which would be placed in the Civic Center lobby. The project involves a display of books from a private collector. The covers of the books were all created by artists and the display is proposed for the months of September and October. DFA has undertaken the project with involvement from the Dublin Library. The Library will have an educational program, as well as a display. Both locations will have information explaining the joint exhibition. Staff has reviewed current reservations for the Civic Center and none include the use of the lobby. In the event that future requests were made to use the lobby, the group would need to be made aware that the display will be in place. Staff does not foresee this as a problem. The reservation of the Regional Meeting Room for the public forum would need to be arranged based on current current reservations. Staff questioned the DFA Staff regarding responsibility for the display. DFA carries Director's Liability Insurance, however, they do not have property insurance. The City has agreed under an agreement with DFA to extend insurance coverage for the two loaned sculptures at the Civic Center. The City's property insurance carries a $5, 000 deductible. Therefore, in the event of damage or loss, the City would have an exposure. DFA has requested a similar arrangement for the book exhibition. The exact books which are proposed to be displayed have not been selected. However, Lynne Baer, DFA Executive Director, has indicated that the total value would not exceed $10, 000. If the City Council agrees to assume responsibility for the display, Staff would obtain a detailed inventory of the display and the value prior to the exhibition. This would limit the City's potential exposure. It is also consistent with previous cooperative projects between DFA and the City. The proposed exhibition is also consistent with the original design intent for the lobby, which foresaw the use of special public displays. This inaugural exhibition will be a collaboration with the Dublin Library and is titled "The Fine Art of Books" . We are pleased to present to the city a private collection of books that have been created by artists. The exhibition presents all aspects of book making including handmade covers, illustrations, printing, and innovative forms of the book itself. The exhibition will be displayed in four cases and will include educational material and labels describing each book. We hope to present a program in the Regional Meeting Room that will discuss the creative process of these very interesting books. We would like to install the exhibition on September 1 and continue the display for two months. The library will also display a group of books as well as conduct an educational program to complement the activities in the Civic Center. At each location, a hand out will explain the joint exhibition. The Foundation appreciates the City Council's continued support of our efforts to integrate art into public spaces of the community. This exhibition, "The Fine Art of Books" , also meets our goal of making art a part of everyday life for the citizens of Dublin.
