AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCil MEETING DATE: July 7,1998 SUBJECT: Request from Alameda County to Support Radar Enforcement for Commercial Vehicular Traffic Report Prepared by: Lee S. Thompson, Public Works Director EXHIBITS A'ITACHED: 1) 2) Letter from Alameda County Resolution RECOMMENDATION: (J ~oPt resolution and direct Staff to forward copy of resolution to f7;VY ~~ornia Highway Patrol. FlNANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRll'TION: Robert Preston, Traffic Engineer for Alameda County, has requested that the .City of Dublin support a request from the California Highway Patrol to support the use of radar to enforce speed limits for truck traffic on 1-580. As stated in Mr. Preston's letter, the CHP has incurred problems in enforcing the speed limit by conventional enforcement methods or aircraft because of modem technology and communications devices that are used by truckers. The concern is that trucks exceeding the speed limit may cause more frequent and/or more severe traffic accidents in the 1-580 corridor. Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the resolution supporting use of radar for commercial enforcement. -----------------------------------~-----~--~~--------------~--~--- . Box 2340 Dub~ CA 94568 P u3 :...l'''';\'\' 0 n l'::> Dear Mr. Thompson: Subject: Radar Enforcement for Commercial Vehicular Traffic (Trucks)- Interstate 580 e- On Tuesday~ June 16, 1998, this Agency will be recommending to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to support the use of radar by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to enforce speed limits along the portion of 1-580 within Alameda County. This radar enforcement will be specifically designated for commercial vehicular traffic (trucks). lv; you may be aware, truckers, through use of modem technology and communication devices, have made it difficult for CHP to enforce speed limits for trucks -with either conventional methods or the use of aircraft. We are concerned about the potential frequency and severity of the traffic collisions involving trucks along 1-580 that may result from this dilemma It is, therefore, our request for the City of Dublin to consider supporting the use of radar by the CHP to enforce speed limits for trucks along 1-580 and subsequently, to send_a letter or Resolution (time permitting) to Mary Hamson, Captain, CHP-Dublin Area supporting this position as she advocates the use ofradar on 1-580. If you have any questions regarding this matter or -wish to discuss this further, please contact me at 670-5577.
