AGENDA STATEMENT
CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: November '17, '1998
SUBJECT:
Authorization to Solicit Bids, Contract 98-15 -Fire Station Exhaust
System
Report Prepared by: Lee S. Thompson, Public Works Director
ATTACHMENTS:
Copy of specification to be available at City Council meeting
RECOMMENDATION: ~ Authorize Staffto advertise for bids.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
The estimated cost of the project is $30,000. This amount has been
budgeted in the Capital Improvement Program for Fiscal Year 1998-
99.
DESCRIPTION: While the Donohue Drive Fire Station was constructed with a limited
ventilation system in the Apparatus B~y, it appears that current OSHA requirements for exhaust removal
are not being met. Staff.is proposing to contract for installation ora system which is now being used in a
number of Alameda County fire stations, as well as in the City of Livermore, the San Ramon Valley Fire
Protection District, and over 200 other cities or fire districts in Northern California.
The system involves use of pneumatic hoses that are connected directly to the fire apparatus exhaust pipes.
The pneumatic fittings disconnect automatically when the apparatus leaves the station so that no time is
spent disconnecting the hoses when an emergency call is received. This system eliminates exposure to the
diesel exhaust and fulfills the OSHA requirements.
It is likely that only one bid will be received for this project, as there is only one authorized installer in
Northern California; however, the City Attorney has advised that the project must be publicly bid in order
to comply with the Public Contracts Code. Staffrecommends that the City Council authorize solicitation
of bids.
