Thompson, Public Works Director ATTACHMENTS: RECOMMENDATION: 1) 2) 3) Resolution Approving One-Hour Parking Location Map Original E-Mail and Subsequent Letter from Residents Adopt Resolution FINANCIAL STATEMENT: The cost of installing One Hour Parking signs would be approximately $500. There are sufficient funds in the Street Maintenance Operating Budget to cover this cost. DESCRIPTION: In December, Staff received a request via the Mayor's office to resolve the issue of high school students parking on CaIlan Street. While the residents themselves apparently do not use the on-street parking, they indicated that service providers and visitors had no convenient place to park as a result. The school has an on-site parking lot, which is usually full, but there is also sufficient on-street parking on Brighton Drive adjacent to the high school, and so it appears the students may be using Callan Street as a matter of convenience. Staff has corresponded and spoken with the three residents whose homes are located on the east side of Callan Street (see correspondence, Exhibit 3). The consensus of opinion was that a one-hour par'king' zone on both sides of Callan Street would cause the students to park elsewhere and leave the on-street parking available for the neighbors. Because the proposal includes both sides of the street, a notice was also sent to the two residents whose sideyards are adjacent to the west side of Callan Street, requesting that comments be submitted by January 22"a; however, no comments were received. The one-hour parking is proposed to be in effect during school hours only, which means that normal parking would be available in the evenings and on weekends and school holidays. Staff'recommends that the City Council adopt the resolution approving the one-hour parking zone. We are very much in favor of time limited parking. Not only would it aid in keeping our neighborhood cleaner; but would be beneficial for our own use. We would prefer a 1 hour limit, as students could still park here after lunch if it were a 2 hour limit. We look forward to heating from you again and hope this can be resolved easily.
