Mayor Houston and Cm. Howard serve as the Citizen & Organization of the Year Committee. Once nominations have been made, the Mayor arranges for the judging to be done by members outside the City of Dublin. This year's judges were Bob Phil cox, Mark Sweeney and Brad Hirst. The winning organization is announced/recognized at a City Council meeting with a proclamation and by having their organization's name placed on a perpetual plaque. They are invited to participate in the St. Patrick's Day parade and festival and two representatives of the organization are the City's guests at the Chamber of Commerce's annual St. Patrick's Day luncheon where they are presented with a plaque by the Mayor. . The groups nominated this year include: Dublin Senior Center Foundation, Soroptimist International of Dublin & Pleasanton, and the Women's Club of Dublin. Letters have been sent to all nominated organizations advising them of their nomination. (;;\1; %~; ..?... -,:-: - -.~ WHEREAS, during 1998, the 57 members of the Women's Club of Dublin donated almost $18,000 and over 5,000 hours in community service which benefited a wide variety of programs such as the Tri. "\ R 1nnc j- r~. !-; ~. -,. ,~:JtJ . 1998 CITY OF DUBLIN ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR NOMINA TION err\( u, uUbUN Name of Organization: Women's Club of Dublin Person to Contact: Colette V ukasovich Phone Number: 833-1932 Brief Description of the Organization's Purpose: The Women's Club of Dublin is a service organization to promote interest for the betterment of the community and country. The events that directly benefited the residents of Dublin during 1998: The Women's Club of Dublin has tried this past year to brighten the corner of Dublin citizens of all ages with our time, talent and money. . Trained members of the club spent 138 hours screening 431 pre school children for amblyopia, a preventable eye condition, at the nursery and day care centers of Dublin. The club paid for all the supplies needed for the screenings ($17.54). The club gave to each 3rd grade student of all the public and private schools a subscription to the S.P.C.A. work sheet Kind News, a publication teaching kindness to animals and therefore kindness to each other.($460) An art contest has held for the students in grades K through 12 including the Kaleidoscope Center. 350 pictures and photographs were entered and cash prizes of $330 and certificates were awarded. The winning works were put on display at the Civic Center and a reception was given to honor the students. The Campbell soup company gives schools academic and sports equipment for their product labels so 250 labels were collected and turned into Nielsen School. . /1 ."J....::: " ." --- v' -.J -~ ... Needy children were treated to Mervyns Kids Spree and received a . voucher for school clothes and back packs with supplies. Members helped the children make the best use of the money.(8 hours) One member tutors students to help bring their learning skills back up to grade I eve!. Six scholarships were awarded to high school students. $165 was given to a Dublin High sophomore to attend a weekend leadership seminar. Two academic scholarships of $250 each and one business scholarship of $500 were given to Dublin High students and one $250 trade and one $250 academic scholarship were given to Valley High students. Members spent 40 hours with the Dublin High "Baby Think it Over" project, 8 hours helping with Mock Interview sessions and $100 was donated to Grad Night to help provide a drug free celebration. To help understand the conununity diverse ethnic backgrounds, one member chairs the Black History program and members support it by providing refreshments. An Indian Affair program was also held. . Libraries are important to Dublin citizens of all ages. $501 was given to the three local libraries. We are members of the Friends of the Dublin Library and spent 9 hours on used book sales to benefit the library. Three election events were held with other organizations. The club encouraged local TV to cover these events and provided all attendees with literature on how to choose elected officials. The club is Proud to Participate in the Perpetual Pew Program at St. Raymond's Historical Site ($375) and gave 174 hours to the Children's Emergency Council and 15 hours to the Volunteer Center. To Operation Dress Up and Operation Pretty Up which trains people to get ready to reenter the work force we gave 60 hours and over $300 in used clothing. . :J/~ I .;;J) . .. The Tri- VaHey Haven for battered women received $6,050 from our annual Festival of Trees fund-raiser and 568 hours of volunteer time. Shepards Gate receiver $230 the Bay Area Crisis Nursery $50, and the Alameda County Domestic Law Project $100 to help women in crisis. The Club is a member of Dublin Sister City organization, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and send a representative to the City Council meetings to keep us informed on community issues. Since we have two senior centers close to each other and many people attend activities at either one, we support both with 1768 volunteer hours. Our members chair bridge, craft and tour groups, help in the kitchen, at bingo games, and maintain the library. $5,600 and 78 hours was donated to the Dublin Senior Center Foundation to help further the activities of the center. . One member started a grief support group and has spent 59 hours helping others to adjust. Hope Hospice has received 213 hours and $170. The Veterans Hospital received $50 for script books, 13 hand made afghans, cookies, soups, coffee, candy, books, used medical equipment, and other supplies for the patients comfort. One member chairs a "sharing your pet" program at the hospital. 1204 hours and $1363 of items wer~ donated.
