FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: The City of Dublin's 1999 Summer Concert Series featured a total
of five concerts. Concerts were held on the fourth Friday of June, as well as the second and fourth Fridays
of July and August, from 7:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. at the Dublin Civic Center. In comparison, last year the
concerts were held on the third Friday of June, July and August from 6:30 P.M.-8:30 P.M. for a total of
three concerts. In an effort to increase exposure for the Concert Series, the City partnered with the five
local car clubs to host a benefit car show as part of the first concert of the season. Proceeds from the car
show benefited the trust fund for the family of Officer John Monego. The car clubs raised over $15,000
..or the family. Following is the 1999 Summer Concert Series Schedule:
June 25 The Aces 50's & 60's Rock-n-Roll
July 9 Encore Nine-Piece Motown Band
July 23 Kathleen Cairns & Tatoo Blue Rhythm & Blues \-
August 13 The Big City Revue Eleven-Piece Variety Dance Act
August 27 91 SI Division Band from Camp Parks Big Band and Classical Music

As shown in the table below, attendance at the concerts rose slightly in 1999. The average attendance per
concert includes the first concert arid the car show. Average attendance per concert, not including the car
show was 375, which was an increase over last year.

Publicity for the Concert Series was greatly expanded over previous years. The concerts were publicized
in several ways including:
.:. Three advertisements in the Herald prior to the concert series listing all concert dates
.:. Three advertisements in the Herald prior to each concert .
.:. Five commercials and numerous public service announcements on KKIQ prior to each concert
.:. New light pole banners in the downtown area
.:. Full-color posters in Dublin businesses
.:. Flyers to all elementary schools in Dublin Unified School District
.:. Press releases before each concert to all local media
.:. The electronic marquee at Dublin Auto Center along Interstate 580
.:. Information in both the Summer and Fall Activity Guides
.:. Mailing to the contacts for 70 local non-profit organizations
Local non-profit organizations were invited to sell food at the concerts again this summer. Participating
groups were charged a nominal fee and were provided tables and chairs. Nine groups sold items at the
concerts this summer, which was an increase of five over last year. Most of the organizations felt sales
were adequate and plan to return next year. Following is a list of participating groups:

COMMISSION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 2000 CONCERT SERIES \
The Parks and Community Services Commission reviewed the concert series at its meeting on September
20, 1999. The Commission unanimously recommended changing the concerts from the 2nd and 4th Friday
of the month to five consecutive Fridays from June 30 to July 28. The Commissioners agreed that having
a regular schedule might help people remember which Friday the concerts are held. In addition, the
Commission directed Staff to investigate the feasibility of holding a sixth concert as a kick-off to the
summer c.oncert series. The event would be geared towards adults featuring classical music in
conjunction with a wine and cheese social. The Commission suggested charging an admission fee and
having the event in the Civic Center Courtyard.
SUMMARY
Staff would recommend that the City Council provide comments on the 1999 Concert Series, consider the
recommendations of the Parks and Community Services Commission and provide Staff with direction on
the 2000 Summer Concert Series.
