City Manager Page 1 of 2 ITEM NO. 3' 3 L~ bmitted By ~ ice Chief of Police DESCRIPTION: During the month of October 2009, four (4) select elementary schools in the Tri-Valley Area promoted alternate methods of getting to and from school through participation in the "Walk `n' Roll to School" program. The program, sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), encouraged walking and biking to school as opposed to being dropped off in a vehicle, leading to benefits such as an increase in youth health and exercise and a reduction in vehicular traffic at the schools. This year the City of Dublin was represented by Dublin Elementary School. The program was promoted with a school assembly on September 23, 2009 featuring Mayor Sbranti, Councilmember Biddle, and members of Dublin Police Services, as well as two morning breakfast events organized by the Parent Faculty Club. Giveaways for Walk `n' Roll participants included reflective decal stickers and water bottles. The City of Dublin also created a "Safer Routes to School" map showing the safest ways to walk or roll to Dublin Elementary, which was presented to the school. Approximately 33% of the student body (177 students out of 538) registered for the program; of those registered, 90 students also turned in their calendars (BAAQMD qualification for "fully participating" in the program). Additionally, 72% of the participants at Dublin Elementary walked or biked to school more than half of the month in October. Special congratulations go to Mrs. Lombardo's and Mrs. Wigand's classes, with the highest percentage of participating students of the entire school (29% and 33%, respectively.) A prize assembly was held on Monday, November 16, where a total of 12 prizes were handed out to students, including a $200 gift certificate donated by Dublin Cyclery. Councilmember Biddle was on hand to help distribute the awards to the winners, who were selected from the pool of participants in a random drawing. Members of the Tri-Valley Air Quality Resource Team will review the program and determine if there is sufficient funding in the team's FY 2010-2011 budget to continue the program or possibly expand it to additional schools. NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: A press release was distributed by Bay Area Air Quality Management District on October 2, 2009 to the local media (Attachment 1). CONCLUSION: Staff would like to recognize Dublin Elementary School, including Mrs. Lombardo's class and Mrs. Wigand's class, for their participation in the Walk `n' Roll program. Staff would also like to recognize Dublin Cyclery (Chuck Tyler, owner) for their generous support of this annual event. ATTACHMENTS: 1. The program is coordinated by the Tri-Valley Spare the Air Team and sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Four select elementary schools in the Tri-Valley will participate in the month-long program, which is highlighted during International Walk to School Week, Oct. S-9. The four Tri-Valley schools participating in the program include: • Dublin Elementary, 7997 Vomac Road, Dublin • Live Oak Elementary, 5151 Sherwood Way, San Ramon • Mohr Elementary, 3300 Dennis Drive, Pleasanton • Jackson Avenue Elementary, 554 Jackson Avenue, Livermore "The goal of the Walk `n' Roll to School program is for parents and students to adopt these practices on a more permanent basis as it promotes healthy activities and reduces the amount of traffic around the schools," said Erin Lamberger, Administrative Analyst with the City of Dublin. "School related commuting not only impacts congestion, but air quality and the health of our children," said Jack Broadbent, Executive Officer of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. "Programs like the Walk `n' Roll to School program are a great way to help children build healthy habits that can last a lifetime and encourage their parents to rethink their own commuting habits." Participating students will track the number of days they bike or walk to school rather than being driven. Throughout the month, they will be rewarded with surprise treats and giveaways. Additionally, prizes will be awarded at the end of the month, courtesy of local businesses including Dublin Cyclery, Livermore Cyclery, Vine Theater, First Treat Yogurt, Target, Woopsie Daisy Toys, Yogofina and CooleyKatz Toys. "This program allows parents to spend time with their children and experience the benefits that walking to school provides," said Lisa Adamos, Economic Development Specialist with the City of Pleasanton. "Classmates, friends and family embarking on this fun program together instill a sense of pride. Ideally, it will create momentum that will last throughout the school year," added Darlene Amaral, Transportation Analyst with the City of San Ramon. ### Contacts: Lisa Adamos Erin Lamberger Darlene Amaral Crystal DeCastro City of Pleasanton City of Dublin City of San Ramon City of Livermore (925) 931-5039 (925) 556-4524 (925) 973-2655 (925) 960-4469 ~~~ ~.~~ 1~1"~~at~
