G~~~ OF DU~~ti i9' ..:~~~`-~• az STAFF REPORT CITY C L E R K ~~~~~// `~~,~~~~ DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL Flle # ^ /^®^O -©® DATE: April 6, 2010 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers FROM: Joni Pattillo, City Manager SUBJE Acceptance of Donation from Dublin /San Ramon Women's Club to Support Dublin Heritage Center Local History Curriculum Kit Prepared By: Elizabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Over the past fiscal year, Staff has been working with educators at the Dublin Unified School District to update the history curriculums for third grade students. The goal was to enhance and integrate aspects of the Heritage Center's "The Journey" Museum as it relates to the area's local history during school site visits. The project has now been completed and approved by the Dublin Unified School District School Board. Additionally, the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club has generously made a donation to the City to pay for curriculum binders for all Dublin Schools. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The total cost to produce the Local History Curriculum Kits was $1,600. The Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club donated the funds to the City in order to produce the Kits. A budget change has been made recognizing the unbudgeted donation as well as the offsetting expense for the kits. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council receive the report and, per Government Code Section 37354, recommends that the City Council accept the gift of $1,600 from the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club; approve the budget change; and direct Staff to prepare a formal acknowledgement to the donor. l~~T ~~ ~~ Submitted by: Parks and Community Services Director Reviewed by: Administrative Services Director Reviewed by: Assistant City Manager Page 1 of 2 ITEM NO. $ ' 2- ~~ DESCRIPTION: In Fiscal Year 2009-2010, the Dublin Heritage Center Staff formed an Education Committee to explore ways to improve classroom visits to "The Journey" museum and help 3`d grade teachers meet the local history curriculum requirements. The Education Committee reviewed existing materials and worked with teachers to develop field trip activities and classroom exercises to supplement site visits. Existing materials were updated to incorporate the new Kolb buildings and expanded Historic Park. The resulting "Local History Curriculum Kit" includes a binder, three books for each classroom, maps and activities. The Curriculum Kit was presented to the Dublin Unified School District School Board in February 2010, where it was received and approved for distribution. The Education Committee: The Education Committee consisted of the following members: • Dayna Tutino: 3~d Grade Teacher at Dougherty Elementary, Heritage & Cultural Arts Commissioner • Jennifer McCort: Dublin High School Teacher • Jayne Coelho: Retired 2"d Grade Teacher • Edy Coleman: Past member, Dublin Unified School District Board Thirty-five Local History Curriculum Kits were required to meet the goal of placing one in every third grade classroom in Dublin. Six public and four private Dublin elementary schools will each receive a kit at a cost of approximately $45 each. The Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club has generously donated $1,600 to accomplish this goal; therefore there is no financial impact to the City. A Budget Change has been prepared (Attachment 1) that reflects the receipt of the donation and an offsetting expenditure for the books and supplies. NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: A copy of the Staff Report was distributed to the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission, Jennifer McCort, Jayne Coelho, Edy Coleman. ATTACHMENTS: 1.
