Report on 2009 Dublin Pride Week Activities
Report Prepared by Roger Bradley, Administrative Analyst
1) 2009 Dublin Pride Week Brochure
Staff recommends that the City Council receive the 2009 Dublin
Pride Week Activities Report
Sufficient funds are included in the Fiscal Year 2008-2009 Budget.
DESCRIPTION: Dublin Pride Week is an annual event that seeks to promote a
positive image for the City of Dublin. The primary objective for Dublin Pride Week is to seek ways to
engage individuals and/or groups in action based activities to help improve the community. This year
Dublin Pride Week is scheduled to start on Saturday, April 25th and will conclude on Saturday, May 2nd
2009. The 2009 Dublin Pride Committee is seeking to build on the success of previous Dublin Pride
Week events by engaging diverse community groups and individuals in the planning process. The
Committee is made up of members representing the following groups:
• City Council
• City Staff
• Amador Valley Industries
• Dublin Chamber of Commerce
• Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD)
• citilinks
• Zone 7 Water Agency
• Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club
• Dublin Lion's Club
• Community Volunteers
Previously, the Committee developed a branding logo that the community could associate with Dublin
Pride Week. The attached brochure and other informational media utilize this branding logo "Our City,
Our Home" with the 2009 slogan "Planet Dublin!" The slogan is an effort to recognize Dublin's
contribution to the global community and encourages people to work to improve our world through
environmental awareness and volunteerism as supported by the Dublin Pride Week activities.

The proposed 2009 Dublin Pride Activities are as follows:
Poster Contest:
The poster contest has been a Dublin Pride Week tradition for many years. The Dublin San Ramon
Women's Club has again volunteered to organize and manage the contest. The Poster Contest is open to
all Dublin students grades K-12. Winning artwork will be displayed at the Civic Center. Awards will be
handed out at a Dublin City Council Meeting.
School Giveaways:
Dublin Pride promotional items will be given to each child that attends school in Dublin. This year's
giveaway is a yoyo made of recycled polystyrene, which will have the Pride Week logo attached. As the
product is made of recycled material, there is no general fund impact as the City is able to use Measure D
revenues for the purchase.
Food Drive:
Collection bins will be set up at the two Safeway grocery stores within Dublin to collect non-perishable
items throughout Pride Week with all food collected to be donated to the Children's Emergency Council.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection:
Dublin residents will be allowed to drop off household hazardous waste free of charge and also pick up
free compost for their personal use. The event will be held at 5601 Arnold Drive (corner of Arnold and
Central Parkway) on May 2°d. An announcement with reservation information will be mailed to Dublin
residents informing them of the event place and time.
Volunteer Day Projects:
Volunteer Day is scheduled for Saturday, Apri125th and will conclude with a free BBQ at Shannon Park
provided by the Dublin Lion's Club. All volunteers will also receive a free "2009 Dublin Pride Week" t-
shirt. Volunteer Day projects include the following:
Senior Assistance Projects
Volunteers will be helping elderly citizens take care of home maintenance projects such as painting,
cleaning, yard work, washing windows, etc.
School Improvement Projects
Volunteers will choose from designated school beautification projects. Activities may include painting,
repairs, cleaning, etc.
Storm Drain Awareness Project
Volunteers will be sent to various locations throughout the City to paste medallions on the City's storm
drains, which remind residents that the storm drain drains to the bay, and as such, only storm water should
enter the drain.
Shannon Painting Project
Volunteers will have the opportunity to help paint a wall that needs a little touching up at Shannon Park.

Nature Walk:
A Nature Walk is scheduled for Saturday, April 25th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will be guided by
East Bay Regional Park District Ranger Katie Colbert along the Martin Canyon Trail. Ms. Colbert will
point out the various flora and fauna located along the trail. Residents are encouraged to sign up at
www.dublinprideweeek.com.
Water Wise Gardening Workshop:
An informational workshop will be provided at the Dublin Library on Tuesday, April 28th, informing
residents about drought tolerant gardening techniques. This workshop is being organized by Dublin San
Ramon Services District (DSRSD) and Zone 7.
Faerie Ring:
As part of the new Shannon Community Center, there is an opportunity for interested groups and
individuals to engrave names or a message at the Center as part of its new Faerie Ring. The ring is in the
form of a circular bench approximately 20 feet in diameter encircled by a concrete bench that will be
sandblasted with donor names similar to the bench in the Civic Center courtyard. The sandblasting will be
provided at cost plus a small fee with any excess revenue donated to the Dublin Children's Emergency
Council. The order form can be downloaded from www.dublinprideweeek.com or residents can contact
the City Manager's Office at (925) 833-6650 to have one mailed to them directly. Applications will be
accepted through the end of Pride Week, or should be turned into the City Manager's Office by the end of
the business day on May 4th
Public Outreach:
The success of Dublin Pride Week is largely dependent on the public outreach campaign developed to
increase the community's awareness and participation in the activities and volunteer opportunities. This
year's public outreach efforts include:
• Website - www.dublinprideweek.com. The website was developed by citilinks as a way
for participants to obtain up-to-date information on the various activities and volunteer
opportunities surrounding Dublin Pride Week. The website also includes a place for
volunteers to sign up to participate in any of the events. The website is highlighted on all
media and outreach materials.
• Promotional posters -Posters displaying last year's Poster Contest winner will be
distributed to area businesses and schools.
• Newsletters -Announcements will appear in school newsletters, Chamber of Commerce
newsletter, and DSRSD newsletter.
• Press releases sent to area media representatives.
• TV Video "Spots" will appear on Tri-Valley Community Television (TV30).
• Brochure- Dublin Pride Week brochure (Attachment 1) will be distributed to all
community and faith based organizations in the City and placed at strategic locations
throughout the City.
