VETERANS' UNITY f•DNTH
The month of November is a special time when we honor all veterans.
The highliellt of the month is usually November 11 , Veterans Day.
The State of California has more veterans than any other state. In
1979 a Vietnam combat veteran of the 173rd Airborne Brigade proposed
an annual month-long period of recognition and honor for all
veterans; but each year highlighting a specific military/veterans
organization or issue for special attention. The program proposal
was studied and accepted in its entirety.
The Governor proclaimed the month of November 1980 as "Veterans Unity
Month" honoring all veterans and specifically highlighting the Nisei
veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT) the most highly
decorated combat unit in U.S. Military history.
The following activities comprising Veterans Unity Month 1980, is
representative of capital activities:
o The last surviving Nisei Medal of Honor recipient was flown
to a 442 RCT reunion in Los Angeles.
o Nisei state legislators and veterans of the Nisei veterans and
442nd RCT Associations were flown to the Governor's ceremony
in Sacramento by special donated charter.
o Veterans Unity Month parade through downtown Sacramento to
the State Capitol.
o Governor's ceremony at Capitol south steps.
o Governor awards the state's highest award, the California
Medal of Valor.
o Governor's cabinet members meet with and brief all veteran
organization commanders.
o Governor's luncheon and reunion for all honored guests.
o Southern California participants were flown back to Los
Angeles and San Diego.
The following units and issues were proposed for special dedication:
Buffalo Soldiers; Native American Veterans; WWI veterans; POW/MIA's;
Female Veterans; Medal of Honor recipients; D-D.y veterans, etc.
Veterans Unity Month has continued to be a success, and this year the
main emphasis is MIA/POW. The Governor's proclamation is attached
and special activities have been planned. Mayors and Boards of
Supervisors will receive copies , and are. reaupsted to coordina tP
their proclamations and activities with the Special Operations
section of the department of Veterans Affairs . at (916) 445-2334
operations officer, Jesse Orta. Thank you for your continuing support.
