RECOMMENDATION:

FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
$45,000 has been budgeted in the Street Maintenance
Operating Budget £or the slurry seal construction and
$42,000 for repair of streets prior to slurry seal.
The cost of design and inspection is budgeted in the
Engineering Operating Budget as part of the General
Engineering cost.
DESCRIPTION: Slurry seal is a preventive maintenance technique used
to prolong the life of a street. It consists of a sand/oil mixture which seals
cracks and provides a new uniform wearing surface. The City streets are slurried
approximately every seven years, depending upon the level of wear.
Last fiscal year, the majority of the City's Capital Improvement Projects were under
construction during February to the end of June because of the uncertainty of budget
cuts. This year, Staff is attempting to spread the projects evenly throughout the
fiscal year in order to even out staffing workloads and reduce the City's inspection
overtime costs. Therefore, the Slurry Seal Project will be scheduled during the
first part of the fiscal year.
This contract will include the repair of the streets to be slurried, as well as the
slurry seal itself. A list of streets proposed to be slurry sealed is attached as
Exhibit 1.
It is recommended that the City Council authorize Staff to advertise Contract 93-10
for bids.
