DESCRIPTION: Prior to the City's acquiring its street lights from PG&E and
converting the billing for both the fonner PG&E lights and the existing City-owned lights to the LS-2A
rate, the City paid to PG&E a specific amount per month as a "pole painting charge." Under this
arrangement, PG&E would periodically repaint the street light poles that were painted as part of their
original installation. The majority of the City-installed poles on arterial streets, as well as those in a
number of the older subdivisions are painted.
Now that the City is responsible for all street lighting maintenance, it is necessary to contract for pole
painting. The existing paint fades and sometimes peels from weather exposure; however, the most
significant cause of paint damage is taping of garage sale signs on the poles.
The work proposed for this fiscal year would repaint the poles on major arterial streets, including Village
Parkway, Amador Valley Boulevard, Dublin Boulevard, and the median poles on San Ramon Road. The
bike path poles are not currently in need of painting. There are approximately 160 poles on these streets.
Staff intends to budget for pole painting annually and to begin a rotation of pole painting so that a
percentage ofthe painted poles are repainted each year.
Staff recommends that the City Council approve award of a purchase order to S1. Francis Electric for pole
_ painting.
