DESCRIPTION: In reviewing the 5-Year Capital Improvements Program, the City Council approved two roadway landscaping improvement projects in the San Ramon Road/Silvergate Drive area. Both projects are proposed to be constructed in two phases, the 1996-97 Fiscal Year being Phase I and 1997-98 being Phase II for each project. The two projects are being combined because of the similarity of type of work, the close proximity of the two projects, and the potential savings due to the order of magnitude of the project. g:miscprojXsrsilver2\agstauth COPIES TO: ITEM NO. San Ramon Road Landscaping Repair: This Phase II project will replace the roadside Vinca ground cover along San Ramon Road between Silvergate Drive and Vomac Road on the east and Shannon Avenue to West Vomac Road on the west. Phase I was from Shannon Avenue to Silvergate Drive on the west side of the roadway. Due to the soil conditions along San Ramon Road, the Vinca ground cover has not done well, and City Maintenance Staff has been battling a constant weed problem. This project will replace the upper soil with imported topsoil and re-landscape with ivy. After establishment, the ground cover will tend to choke out weed growth and reduce the cost of weed control. It will also improve the aesthetics of the roadside landscaping. $ilvergate Median Landscaping: Phase I of this project installed new landscaping in the medians at the east end of Silvergate Drive between Peppertree Road and San Ramon Road. Phase II will upgrade the landscaping that exists in the median at the south end of Silvergate Drive near Dublin Blvd.. Phase I installed irrigation for the islands on the east side and Phase II will install irrigation in the south end median. The plant materials will be primarily trees and shrubs with some perennial flowers. Paver brick areas will be included to conform with other medians around the City as well as reduce furore landscaping and irrigation costs. The landscaping on the south end of Silvergate Drive has never reached its potential due to the lack of irrigation, and the need for a more integrated design for the plant materials. Plans and specifications have been prepared for bidding. Staffrecommends that City Council authorize Staffto advertise for bids on these two combined Capital Improvements Projects as one bid package.
