DESCRIPTION: Through a periodic maintenance review, it was discovered
that the concrete deck on this bridge is showing signs of wear and stress, indicated
by numerous cracks developing on the deck's traffic surface. Also, the bridge piers
have been undercut from previous storm water erosion.
The deck cracking has been tested by drilling circular concrete cores on the deck
down to the reinforcing bars. It was found that the cracks are surface only,
extending about 1 to I 1/2 inches deep. The reinforcing steel was in good condition
with no corrosion.
The Phase I Repair will be, then, to clean the deck and place a resin sealer to fill
the cracks, stabilize the surface and seal the deck from moisture intrusion.
The future Phase II project will back-fill the channel slopes and riprap the slope
surfaces.
Plans and specifications have been prepared for Phase I and Staff recommends that
Council authorize the bidding of this project.
