AGENDA STATEMENT
CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: March 4, 1997
SUBJECT:
Holiday Light Display
Report by Greg Reuel, Economic Development Manager
Sierra Display, Inc. Invoice for additional green lights
EXHIBITS ATTACHED:
RECOMMENDATION: r\/' Approve the purchase of green lights and the costs to change
\l/v" I existing Holiday Lights at the Civic Center for the City's St. Patrick
Day celebration.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
Changing the lights at the Civic Center to green for use during St.
Patrick's Day will cost $610.
DESCRIPTION:
To help set a theme that makes the City inviting to visit during the holidays, Civic Center Holiday
Decorations were included in the 1996-1997 Capital Improvement Program as a high priority item.
$5,000 was appropriated for this project.
The City Council approved the lighting of the Civic Center for the month of December at a cost of
, . $3,000.84. The majority of this cost was for the purchase and installation of 875 feet of "light line" on the
. top of the Civic Center. Red, Clear and Green C-9, 10 watt lamps were used in the light line at one foot
spacmg.
The "light line" is still in place at the Civic Center and will be taken down and stored by the vendor upon
request by the City as part of the original purchase price mentioned above. Staff has been asked to
evaluate the reuse of the existing "light line" using only green lamps for the 8t. Patrick's Day Celebration
or for other celebrations.
The "light line" that was purchased by the City for the Holiday Lights display is a reusable product but
was not designed to stay up permanently. With the initial cost of materials and installation already paid
for by the City, to change the lights to all green for St. Patrick's Day would cost the City $270 for new
green lights and $340 for installation.
If the City wants to use Holiday Lights for the 4th of July, the same costs listed above would be incurred
to change the lights to different colors for that event. It is not recommended by the manufacturer that we
keep the light line up after July.
The initial cost of installation, takedown and storage of the light line was $1,093.75. There is a savings to
the City whenever we can use the installed "light line" for more than one event, Le. Christmas, St.
Patrick's Day and the 4th of July.
