Median and Roadside Weed Maintenance

FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
Additional projects have been included in the Capital Improvement
Program to landscape or relandscape several street areas in the City.
These projects will be reviewed as part of the budget review at the
June 27. 1996. meeting.
DESCRIPTION: At the May 28th meeting, the City Counell requested a report on the
resolution of a weed problem in medians and along roadsides.
The City's maintenance crew normally schedules two sprayings and subsequent weed removal for brick
paver areas. one in the fiill at the beginning of the rainy season, and one in the spring after the rainy season
has ended. This year, the work had already been cOmpleted when additional rains fell in May.
Subsequently, a new crop of weeds came up. A third spraying was completed in early June, with the
follow-up removal of dead weeds taking place the week of June 17th. MCE's roadside weed .control
subcOntractor was :lilced with similar new growth problems and was able to complete.a general cleanup this
month. . , '
CounciJmember Barnes had commented on the use of stamped concrete medians instead of the brick pavers
to lessen the ability of weeds to germinate. Sta1fhad looked into this alternate in the early 1980's when the
first medians were being landscaped and had chosen paver over stamped concrete. Some problems that
other cities have had with stamped concrete are:
1. It is necessary to break out and remove the concrete in order to accomplish some irrigation or
utility repairs, whereas the bricks can be lifted out and replaced.
2. Concrete, colors are difficult to match when making repairs, as the color tends to fade with time.

, vegetated portions of the roadside and slope landscaping as well as work toward, completing the
landscaping master plan for the District.
S. While not in the Capital Improvement Budget, there are proposed additional monies in the Villages
Maintenance Assessment District to replace and upgrade roadside landscaping.
These proposed projects should not only improve the aesthetics of the roadways within Dublin, but will
also tend to keep down the weed production once the plantings have become established.
If the Council would like additional actions to be taken, or further improvements made, then direction
should be given to Staff for inclusion into the 1996-97 Budget.
