Full size colored plans will be displayed at the meeting. Slides of each of the proposed plant materials will be presented . RECOMMENDATION Receive Staff presentation Discuss & comment on concepts presented Provide direction to Staff on lawn vs ground cover FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Portions of the landscape design are included in the 1984-85 budget . The construction costs are reflected in the Five Year Capital Improvement Plan DESCRIPTION In order to complete the design of the San Ramon Road widening project ( I-580 to Silvergate Drive ) and Village Parkway median project ( Amador Valley Boulevard north) , direction from the City Council is required relating to conceptual landscaping plans . The proposals developed include the following elements : 1 . Village Parkway a . The east side of the street be planted with street trees , bushes and vines similar to those being planted along the west side of the street . b . The median treatment is proposed to be somewhat less formal than the downtown area in as much as the area is more residential in nature and there is more room in the medians for substantial landscaping. The left turn bays are proposed to be similar to others approved using interlocking paving stones with tree cutouts . The wider areas will be outlined by paving bricks with large trees regularly spaced over a large slightly mounded planter. The planter area would have either ground cover or grass . At street light locations , the surface would be the interlocking paving stones with several cutouts for smaller trees . 2 . San Ramon Road a. East side (Dublin Boulevard to Martin Canyon Creek) - Landscape with street treewells placed intermittently along the sidewalk. b . West side (Dublin Boulevard to Iceland frontage) - Between the edge of pavement and the bike path - Provide trees and ground cover. C . West side (Jeha Center to Silvergate Drive) - This area will be landscaped by developers fronting San Ramon Road . d . Median (Dublin Boulevard to Amador Valley Boulevard) - Establishment of a low raised paver planter similar to the approved Village Parkway project between Dublin Boulevard and Amador Valley Boulevard . e . Medians (Amador Valley Boulevard north) - Design similar to Village Parkway described above . f . Down slopes - Large canopy trees mostly evergreen to serve as a screen, ground coved- on the slope and shrubs along the fences . ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- COPIES TO : ITEM NO . Random spacing of trees and use of groupings of trees . There are several areas of consideration in determining whether to plant lawn or ground cover. The aesthetic appearance of grass is a more lush landscape treatment and complements residential areas . The ground cover is slightly less expensive to install . The ongoing maintenance costs of ground cover are approximately 1/3 of those for lawn areas . The cost savings are partially related to the need for nearly twice the amount of water to sustain grass areas . Also , they require more frequent maintenance . For example , the relative annual maintenance costs for the ground cover areas for Village Parkway from Amador Valley Boulevard north is estimated at $9 ,000 for ground cover and $25 , 000 for lawn. Three basic alternatives are offered for each street . The City Council should consider the alternatives proposed for each street and direct Staff as appropriate . Alternative #1 : Utilize ground cover on the center medians . Alternative #2 : Establish lawn areas on the center medians . Alternative #3 : Use a combination of lawn and ground cover in the median landscape design.
