SUBJECT:
City Participation in Dublin Pride Week and Acceptance of Gifts to
the City (prepared by: Sue Barnes, Management Assistant)

Letter dated January 8, 1997, from Tim Hunt, Tri- Valley Herald,
outlining co-sponsorship agreement.
1) Approve participation with a City contribution not to exceed
$4,000.
2) Accept gifts from Livermore Dublin Disposal and the Tri-
Valley Herald, and direct staff to prepare formal
acknowledgment.
FlNANCIAL STATEMENT:
Funds are available in the Fiscal Year 1997-98 budget. In addition,
Livermore Dublin Disposal will contribute $2,500, and the Tri- Valley
Herald will contribute a variety of advertising and promotional
servIces.
. DESCRIPTION:

Dublin Pride Week is an annual event which seeks to promote a positive image for the City of Dublin. The
goal is to seek ways in which individuals or groups can act to improve the community. This year, the
motto is "Dublin Pride, City Wide." Plans are also being made to focus on raising awareness of recycling
activities during the week.
This year, Dublin Pride Week is scheduled to begin on Sunday, March 15 and will conclude on Saturday,
March 21. March 15 also marks the first day of Livermore-Dublin Disposal's expanded weekly clean-ups.
Each household can dispose of up to three cubic yards of refuse at no additional charge. This year, for the
first time, wood waste can be separated and recycled during the clean-ups.
A committee comprised of city staff and sponsor representatives has met twice and has developed a plan to
implement the following goals:
Further Expand Community Awareness of Dublin Pride Week
. Promotional posters will be distributed to area businesses (design and printing donated by
Tri-Valley Herald).
. Press releases will be sent to area newspapers and PSA's to radio stations.
. Newspaper ads announcing the event will run in the Tri- Valley Herald (donated).

Involve City School Children in Dublin Pride Activities
. Distribute "Dublin Pride" promotional items to each child that attends school in Dublin
. Poster contest for grades K-5 and essay contest for grades 6-12 (with prizes)
. All participants will receive a certificate of appreciation
. Wmners at each grade level will receive monetary prizes (donated directly to the schools by
Livermore-Dublin Disposal
. Wmning posters will be displayed at Civic Center
. Poster and essay contest winners will be invited to ride in the parade
. Wmning posters and essays will be printed in the Tri-Valley Herald (donated)
Encourage Community hnprovement Projects
Individuals, classes, groups, and businesses will be encouraged to donate their time to community-
improvement projects during Dublin Pride Week. Projects could include helping a senior paint his/her
house, sprucing up a neighborhood, or cleaning up a school playground. The Tri- Valley Herald has agreed
to feature outstanding projects in the newspaper and acknowledge the groups or individuals that undertook
them. Anyone who completes a project will be given a certificate acknowledging their participation in the
event.

Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council approve City participation and authorize City expenditures to
promote Dublin Pride Week not to exceed $4,000. Staff also recommends that the Council accept the gift
from Livermore Dublin Disposal, and the in-kind donations from the Tri-Valley Herald, and direct staff to
formally acknowledge the generous donations.
