DESCRIPTION: At the December 17, 1996 meeting of the Dublin City Council,
Children's Theatre Wing Volunteer President, Les Duman, informed the Council that Children's Theatre
Wing (CTW) most likely will be closing their doors at the end of the summer. He presented information
on their final show, Pinnoccio, and stated that he would also like to speak with someone about Shanachie,
an Irish folk music and storytelling group. The matter was referred to the Parks and Community Services
.irector. . .
As explained in the attached letter (Exhibit A), CTW is proposing to bring Shanachie to Dublin as an
educational and entertaining vehicle connecting Dublin with its sister city, local heritage and general
historic and folkloric value. The performances are scheduled from January 22 through January 26, 1997
at Dublin Elementary School, the interim home of CTW. CTW is requesting that the City provide flyers
and posters for marketing purposes and that the City coordinate distribution of a portion of these flyers
and posters in the Dublin schools and businesses. Distribution outside of Dublin will be handled by
CTW. Total printing costs are estimated to be $1,000.
Shanachie is a California based group that presents a folk-singing show that features music from around
the world. Using a show-type format that emphasizes audience participation, its repertoire includes music
from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales mixed with American Folk Music, Bluegrass, Country,
Western, Gospel, Calypso, Music Hall as well as songs in Spanish, German and Russian. An information
sheet on Shanachie is attached in Exhibit B.
It is recommended that the City Council receive the presentation from Staff and representatives from
Children's Theatre Wing. If the Council wishes to fund the request from CTW, it will be necessary to
authorize an additional appropriation in an amount not to exceed $1,000 from the General Fund
Unallocated Reserves.
