DESCRIPTION:
The City Council will consider the following proclamations for the month of September:
1. National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month
Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
(SAMHSA) sponsors Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of
mental and substance use disorders and celebrates the gains made by those in
recovery. Recovery month also serves to help reduce the stigma and misconceptions
that cloud public understanding of mental and substance use disorders and that would
discourage people from seeking help.

2. National Wilderness Month
September marks the anniversary of the Wilderness Act, signed into law by President
Lyndon Johnson on September 3, 1964. It created the legal definition of wilderness in
the United States, and protected 9.1 million acres of federal land, the result of a long
effort to protect the federal wilderness and to create a formal mechanism for
designating areas of wilderness. This proclamation encourages people to celebrate
National Wilderness Month by getting out and visiting State and National Parks.
3. National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and is recognized by childhood
cancer organizations from around the world. The goal is to increase awareness of and
raise funds for those affected by childhood cancer. During this time, the American
Childhood Cancer Organization encourages everyone to wear Gold in support of
childhood cancer awareness.
4. National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
September is National Childhood Obesity Month. According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, about one in five (19%) children in the United States suffers
from obesity. Certain groups of children are more affected than others. National
Childhood Obesity Awareness Month provides a chance for all of us to learn more
about this serious health condition.
5. National Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15, by
celebrating the contributions and importance of the Hispanics and Latinos to the
United States and those American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico,
the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. This year, the National Council of
Hispanic Employment Program Managers’ theme for Hispanic Heritage month is
“Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.”
6. National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the United States. Ovarian cancer is
a type of cancer that first forms in the ovaries and may spread. On Saturday,
September 25, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition will unite for Together in TEAL
– Everywhere as One across the nation. Participants can run, walk, ride, skip, jump –
whatever gets them moving safely – to raise awareness about the signs, symptoms, and
risk factors of ovarian cancer and educating the public about the power of early
detection.
7. National Preparedness Month
The goal of National Preparedness Month is to raise awareness about the importance of
preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. The 2021
theme is “Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.”

National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s
entrepreneurs and small business owners. This year National Small Business Week will
be marked by a virtual summit celebrating resilience and renewal, held September 13-
