Month honors America’s diverse society and the impact Caribbean countries and their
descendants have had on shaping American culture.

wildlife, refuges, parks, and natural beauty. This recognition raises awareness of the
accessibility and inherent value of the great outdoors.

Administration celebrates #OceanMonth2021 by providing educational resources on their

7. Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in
the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by
Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had
ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two years after the Emancipation
Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln. Juneteenth today, celebrates African
American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and
respect for all cultures.
8. National Gun Violence Awareness Day and Month
National Gun Violence Awareness commemorates the life of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-
old, who was tragically shot and killed. National Gun Violence Awareness Day is
commemorated on the first Friday of June annually and asks citizens to wear orange to pay
tribute to Hadiya. Orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life and to help
raise awareness about gun violence. Throughout the month of June, many organizations
across California and the United States will be holding events in recognition of the many
who are tragic victims of gun violence.
