What school will you attend
in the 2020-2021 school
year?
Dublin Highschool
What grade will you be in 10
during the 2020-2021
school year?
1. Why do you want to
become a member of the
City of Dublin Youth
Advisory Committee (YAC)?
The city of Dublin has given me so much, from resources to
amazing schools and an active community that has always
organized events and programs for the betterment of its
people, especially children and teens. With all of these
resources, as a highschooler, I want to add more to the
activities in Dublin by inputting my opinions and voicing other
teens' opinions to help these programs imply to everyone and
make everyone satisfied with them. I believe that if you want an
effective committee, you need to involve all opinions and
voices on an idea, and I really want to be part of that spectrum.
I want to be part of a committee that allows everyone as a team
to make the already amazing programs offered at Dublin better,
or add to them as our needs and citizens change. To me, the
YAC is a way to look at the big picture of our town and what it
needs. It is not just about making an effort, but it looks at
Dublin as a whole to see how everyone can benefit, not a
certain group of activities or a certain program. This really
adheres to me since I always like to take part in actions that
can affect the future of something, and in this case, the YAC is
a chance for more me to make an impact on Dublin and its
future, which I admire since I believe that actions with effort are
the most significant and impactful. I recently was talking to my
friend about the committee and what she had done in the
board, such as helping in coordinating events such as Splatter,
and from this, I know being part of this committee requires
commitment. Commitment has always been part of my
personal philosophy, and the fact that this committee requires
commitment not only makes my personal skills feel valuable,
but also my personal philosophies in which the committee align
with. Additionally, I love communicating and interacting so
when I saw this committee, I knew I would enjoy being part of
it. I believe strongly in working with other people towards a
common goal and I know the skills I bring not only as an
experienced student and citizen, but as a committee member
will not only bring me work satisfaction, but will make me a
3
2. What skills do you
possess that would make
you a strong candidate for
the YAC?
valuable person to interact with as well. I know the YAC would
be a wonderful experience for me to bring my knowledge and
opinions on what teens want to the table which will ultimately
benefit the town. In short, it gives me a great sense of
fulfillment and power when I make an impact on something by
using my passion for giving back to help others, and in this
case, teens.
I know that if you want to be effective in the YAC, you have to
possess some kind of past experience that will put you in
situations similar to the ones you’ll be put in as being part of
the YAC. I know from my past leadership work and volunteer
work that I not only developed skills, but also the ability to
understand situations from my experience. Experience has
allowed me to develop passion for what I am doing by working
with others to find a solution. Every issue or difficult situation I
was put in the past makes me a strong candidate for the YAC
since it prepared me for real life decisions I might have to
make. My experience doesn’t just end at a few skills; it extends
beyond that.
Almost everything I was involved in required leadership, a skill
that makes everything run smoothly in an orderly fashion.
Being the president and founder of Help The Refugees club at
Dublin High has really rewarded me with leadership. I was the
only one interested in making the club, and not many people
wanted to join or were interested. Me, my VP, and my advisor
had to work together to advertise the club. There were times
when my small group of club officers felt disheartened, but I
always reminded them that if we worked together to invite
people in our club, we would get members. I took lead and
assigned roles to each of my officers; one had to make an
Instagram for our club, one had to advertise at the fair, along
with many other duties. I, myself, made an outline on what
activities our club would have and shared it with fellow
students, in which many people expressed interest. I now am
responsible to sign off people’s volunteer sheets and further
organize activities to members and give duties to my officers.
Because of this, I know how to make the impossible happen
and keep everyone motivated, which is important in being part
of the YAC since I am working with other teens. I also have the
ability to facilitate activities and make sure they are running
smoothly since that is what I had to do when I took my club
members to a refugee simulation planned by me with
RedCross. With this, I took away that leadership is the glue that
holds everything together, and I believe I have that. I am able
to identify what kind of roles a certain person would do well in,
and which roles they would struggle in, which has allowed me
to have good decision making skills, another good quality of an
4
experienced leader.
For decision making, I typically list out all available options and
then weigh the pros and cons and expected outcomes of each.
If other people are impacted by the decision, I’ll ask for their
thoughts, too. Sometimes a peer will point out a pro or con that
I hadn’t seen, so I find it helpful to talk to others when
appropriate. After this, I’ll choose the course of action that I feel
is most likely to bring about the best outcome. I also weigh
risks of each possible decision. If one decision has a good
potential outcome but comes with too much risk, then it may
not be the right choice. I have to practice this skill a lot, as I am
the lead writer of The Sunday Minaret at my sunday school in
Plesanton. All of my fellow writers have many ideas for articles,
but when deciding with my peers, we all have to agree to a
decision since the newsletter can only have a certain amount of
articles. The articles chosen also have to be the most relevant,
and since I am one of the lead writers, I often have to advise
my peers and ask for advice. This has helped me a lot in
making effective decisions in which I hope to imply to the YAC.
Along with experience, leadership, and good decision making,
effective communication has been something I have also
believed to be vital in any job, role, or position. This is because
I have been using this skill throughout my entire life in all my
extra hobbies and activities, and the more I use it, the more I
realize its necessity. This is specifically shown in my volunteer
work over summer at Rahma summer camp, a camp in which I
mentored younger kids in Arabic, art, and organized activities
with the help of adults and other teens. I had to often
communicate with people of all age groups in this camp;
younger children to mentor, other teens to help me coordinate,
and adults and seniors to advise me and discuss ideas. In the
camp, I had to effectively communicate with everyone to make
sure everybody was satisfied with the activities and everyone
had a voice. I had to make sure fellow mentors were okay with
doing a certain activity and I had to make sure we all talked out
our plan for the children we mentored to make sure we were on
the right page. I would then take our ideas to the adults that ran
the camp to get it approved. If they found the activity not
applicable to the camp, me and the adults had to effectively
revise our weekly plan by talking out the problems or any
disagreements we had. Because of this, I have the ability to
interact with a wide range of people with different backgrounds,
ages, and opinions, which has given me the ability to
understand others and their point of view. Being able to see
eye to eye with someone to find a solution is something I have
always exceeded since I can do it with anyone. This is needed
in the YAC, as I will be interacting with their teens and hearing
about their opinions, as well as the opinions of citizens on
5
3. What do you believe are
issues teens in Dublin are
currently dealing with, and
how do you think YAC could
address these issues?
events organized and set up by the YAC. Through my
experience, I have developed strong communication skills, and
I’m able to clearly convey points to different audiences. I’m also
a good listener which aids in my ability to intimately understand
a situation and prepare an appropriate response. I believe that
my strong organizational skills will also be an asset in this role.
In every activity I participate in, there always has to be planning
and organizing. Being part of a club has really attested me to
this, as well as simply being a student and part of numerous
activities.
I would rate my organizational skills as excellent. I manage my
time efficiently and I am able to meet deadlines and always go
to club meetings. I organize my thoughts, documents, and work
efficiently and effectively which leads to meeting deadlines and
impacting greatly. My organizational skills will prove great in
the YAC since they will help me run activities smoothly and
ensure that everything is in its place and going well. Again, all
of these skills are developed from experience, so they make
me a qualified and strong candidate for the YAC.
An emerging problem I’ve seen among teens is racism. It has
always been there, but especially during these times with
CoronaVirus and the fact that I am surrounded with high school
students seems to make racism more acceptable. I have faced
it myself, and many teens often make a derogatory comment
as a joke to another teen to make it seem not that serious, but I
can see the comment does make an impact on the teen it's
being targeted to. They might laugh it off, but it still hurts, and
teachers do nothing about it. Since most of these incidents
happen in classrooms, the best way for the YAC to address it is
to first of all, as YAC members, speak out against the comment
and tell a teacher. Before the school year, YAC members
should ask teachers to keep an ear out for racist comments
and have a class discussion in the beginning of the year by a
YAC member making a presentation for the class for the
teacher to use.
Many students are also experiencing a lot of homework,
especially AP and Honors students during block schedule.
Although block schedule is good for non AP students, students
in advanced classes are having a lot of homework from
teachers. YAC could address this issue by suggesting to
teachers to have the second period of block schedule devoted
to test prep and homework. There should also be an online
system organized and set up by the YAC in which students
sign in and enter the work they will be doing so that teachers
know that they are working and not just doing non related
school work. If there are a lot of students found to do non
related school work, YAC members that see this among peers
6
should report to teachers to make the entire block devoted to
the lesson plan and not give students time for homework until
they learn to efficiently work again.
Additionally, many teens also face the issue of isolation and
having no one to talk to. We live in a busy area, often with both
parents working and not having enough time with their kids.
This can lead to teens feeling isolated and alone. The best way
for the YAC to address this issue is to have programs for the
parents and children that are facing these issues. Sometimes
parents have to work and can't give enough time to their kids,
so if the YAC hosted biweekly or monthly classes or sessions
for these families, it would make a big impact. In these
sessions, there would be bonding activities and activities to
help parents and their children open up and get to know each
other better, all run by the YAC.
4. What activities are you
currently involved in or will
be involved in during the
2020-2021 schoolyear, and
will you be able to devote
time each month for YAC
meetings and activities?
I am involved in a few activities this year, and I am going to be
involved in these same activities next year so that I can grow in
the skills these certain activities and hobbies offer me. This
year, I am invovled in the Dublin High School Newspaper,
Muslim Student Association, MCC Sunday Minaret Newsletter,
as well as Dublin Librbary’s Teen Advisory Group. I will be
involved in these activities next year as well, because this year
I managed these activities very well with my school work and
other priorities. The activities I will do are more of hobbies and
not mandatory, so I know I will be able to have time for the
YAC because of how I schedule things. I always prioritize
activities in my schedule on what is most important and set
myself reminders on my calendar and phone throughout the
year, and because of this, I know the YAC will be my top
priority since I promised to commit to it. My other activities can
wait since they can be done anytime, but when it comes to the
YAC, I know I have to give full devotion and commitment, not
only because I am passionate about helping out, but the
committee is counting on me to fulfill my responsibility. I know I
will be able to devote time to every single meeting and event
because the activities that I participate in have flexible timings,
they are more of things I would do on my own time instead of at
a scheduled time. The YAC needs participation to keep it going
and effective, and I know that without the drive from teens in
the YAC, there will be no drive for other teens to go to city
sponsored events. I want to change that by going to every
7
meeting to get people involved, and I would go to the meeting
not just to benefit the community, but also because I would look
forward to going since the experience of talking to others to find
a solution or organizing something cannot be compared to
anything else. I understand the importance and devotion being
part of the committee, as well as know myself and how I won’t
miss a single meeting since I actually look forward and take joy
in talking out issues, which I know is vital in ensuring a
successful committee. It requires members that are ready to
sacrifice other activities and passionately arrive at every
meeting and activity with something to say, and that is exactly
what I have. I know how to prioritize and plan out my activities,
and because of this, the YAC will always be on my mind when
planning out my schedule. YAC will obviously be the most high
ranked and major activity in my calendar since it's vital to the
citizens and teens of Dublin, but also because I want to go to
the events and participate. I want to see my impact, and I can’t
if I don't devote time. The YAC meetings and events will always
be the activities that will shape my schedule, so every activity I
plan will be according to the timings of the next YAC activity or
event. This attributes to my efficient scheduling and planning
skills, as well as the passion of actually being in the meeting
taking over other activities I may have which all in all, makes
me a very devoted and constant person to any role and
position I will be given in the committee.
5. How would you get other
teens involved in the
community, teen events,
and City-sponsored
activities?
I was always, and still am very involved in everything going on
in the community by volunteering at events and participating in
various clubs in Dublin High as a way to share and connect
with other teens. Almost all of the many activities I participate in
make me interact with others and meet new people to share
ideas. As a result, I have many connections over Dublin from
the place I volunteer in and the clubs I take part in. All of these
people I know are passionate and ambitious people like me,
wanting to make an impact in the work they do. As for me,
getting all these driven teens to City Sponsored events is a
responsibility for me, and I can fulfill it by simply spreading the
word through this circle. What Dublin needs in events is teens
that actually want to be active in City sponsored community
activities, and the people I know are exactly like that. Getting
them involved won’t be a difficult task, I would talk to them
about the program, invite them to attend a YAC meeting to get
them interested in the events, and then teen events would be
more known among teens. I feel like the main reason many
teens are not involved is because they simply don’t know what
is going on.
There has to be a way to spread the word of events coming up,
8
and aside from talking to other teens part of a connected circle,
there are other ways. This is especially true as I am part of two
newsletters, one at Dublin High called the Dublin Shield, and
one at my local mosque at my Sunday School called The
Sunday Minaret. Being part of these newspapers has allowed
me to share information, as well as learn new things and
provide information to others. With these two newsletters, I can
write about events and activities coming up and information on
how to sign up. Since both newsletters are targeted to
students, specifically high school students, I can write about
the benefits of participating, how to sign up, and the activities
included in the event.
When trying to get teens involved, you have to bring up events
through a medium that teens not only read a lot, like the
newspapers I am part of, but also in places they visit. Since I
am a member of the Teen Advisory Group at the Dublin
Library, I know many teens that work with me and also visit the
library. The library is often a place with many announcements
and flyers, and they even have a whole board on upcoming
events. I know the librarians personally, so I can always tell
fellow friends and teens at the library about ways to get
involved in the community. The librarians can also make an
announcement in the Teen Advisory Group Meetings, and
distribute this message to other teens in the many art and
science programs the librarians supervise for teens.
Since I have made flyers before for events at my mosque, I
also have the expertise of making eye catching flyers and
posting them in places teens go often, such as the library or
places of worship (mosque or church). I would also personally
talk to people since there is nothing like talking in person to get
others involved. This can be done by talking to other teens or
updating them about what is happening, but also altogether
involving them more in the idea of getting involved and
participating in City sponsored community events with things
relevant and important to teens to make them actually feel as if
city sponsored activities are an integral part of their lives. I can
do this by involving their perspectives on what they think about
events by sharing it with other students in the YAC. When
others see how much you are committed and involved, they
would want to do the same, so along with doing all these
things, I would go to the events myself by offering other teens
to take them to the event as an example of what getting
involved means and why it is worth it.

Fallon Middle School

I want to be part of the Youth Advisory Committee to raise
awareness to my fellow peers to always be a help in our
marvelous community. I also want to be part of the YAC
because I think that I am very helping and generous. I love to
help with activities around the city. I am a current member of
the YAC and I volunteered at events such as the Annual Tree
Lighting Ceremony, the Public Safety Complex grand opening,
and I was planning to help out at the St.Patrick’s Day
Parade/Fair and the Teen Valley Job Fair, but those events
were postponed because of COVID-19.
I have talked with my peers and I know changes that they
would like to see in the community. I shared what events the
Yac was going to assist in and I encouraged my peers to visit
those events. I can also help to create volunteering events that
my peers would like to participate in.
I possess strong leadership and diligence. Every time I do a
group project, I always bring my leadership skills to the project.
If I have a goal, I won’t stop trying till I reach it. I love working
with others to make sure everyone can take part in the project.
I also have done a lot of community service. I love helping out
in the community because it gives a chance for people to grow.
For example, I raised $60 dollars for the East Bay SPCA by
selling popcorn on superbowl day in 2018. I am a good listener
and I can come up with creative ideas such as in the YAC we
had to give a grant to a certain amount of groups and I came
up with an idea to disperse the money and everyone agreed.
I believe stress is a big issue that Dublin teens are dealing with.
I have a brother who is in 12th grade. I have talked to him and
some of his friends and they think that it is a big problem too.
YAC can help this by supporting initiatives like stress

awareness or stress relieving programs. This way we can
make sure that the students in children stay healthy and safe.
Some activities that I am involved in now or will be in the 2020-
2021 school year are basketball and dancing. I play basketball
in various competitive leagues that are local and in the tri-
valley. I have learned sportsmanship and teamwork from
basketball. I have been dancing for the last 6 years. I will be
able to devote as much time as needed for YAC meetings and
activities because I am very passionate about it. As a current
member of the YAC, I have been able to attend all the
meetings comfortably and I have gone to most of the
volunteering events.
I would get other teens involved in the community, teen events,
and city-sponsored activities by making colorful and attractive
flyers and posters. I have been doing art for the last 8 years so
I can use my creativity skills to create advertisements. Also, I
was in student council for 2 years so I know how to make
posters and I love it! Since I am not old enough, older YAC
students can create social media accounts also. We can use
these to advertise to students who use social media daily. I am
part of the news club in Fallon Middle School, which I can use
to engage my peers in the community.
As a current member of the YAC, I have attended all of the
meetings, but the specific one I want to talk about was on
November 13, 2019. During that meeting we reviewed mini
grant applications. I was glad to see so many different groups
doing many different activities. We were able to help 6 of those
groups with their proposals.

Dublin High school
Grade 10 (Sophomore)
I firmly believe membership in the Dublin Youth Advisory
Committee is critical in order to expand the variety of things
which I am planning on doing in my three remaining years of
high school. I want to go beyond just joining clubs and sports
teams at school, and more so participating and helping in my
community. I believe that the youth advisory committee will
give me the opportunity to involve myself in the community and
give a helping hand.
I believe the experience and skills which I have developed as a
boy scout would make me a strong candidate for the Youth
Advisory Committee.
The variety of activities I have been engaged in from earning
merit badges to week long camping trips have allowed me to
develop communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
These are supplemented by the countless hours of service
projects I have participated in, where I have done things from
cleaning up parks to building wooden decks.
A testament to my experience as a scout was through my
Eagle Project, in which I had to utilize all of these skills to plan
and execute a book drive and build book boxes for my church.
All in all, my leadership, communication, planning, and
teamwork skills as well as prior involvement in the community,
make me a strong candidate for the YAC!
An issue I notice in teens include temptations to vaping. This
results in neglecting school, and filling the bathrooms with vape
odor.
The YAC could address the issues by creating informative
slideshows which expose the negative impacts of drugs on the
body and surroundings, to discourage health conscious drug

users. In addition, the YAC could organize movements and
events to discourage vaping.
In the 2020-2021 school year, I plan to be participate in the
Dublin High School cross country and swim teams, which will
occupy the fall and spring seasons. On top of that, I will be
attending weekly boy scout meetings as well as weekly
robotics club meetings. However, the sports teams do not meet
at the same time and my boy scout troop and robotics club
both meet on a different day. This means that I will be able to
devote time every month to attend YAC meetings and events,
since none of my other activities will intervene with YAC
activities.
I would get other teens involved in the community, teen events,
and City-sponsored activities by advertising the events to the
students (usually teens) through Dublin High School (DHS).
I can use the digital resources of DHS to appeal to the large
majority of teens. By communicating with the Video Bulletin
team, I can request a small segment to advertise events via
video. On top of that, I can communicate with the school staff
to post a headline on the DHS website, showing parents and
teens alike the latest events or activities. I can also request the
teachers to post event information on their websites and/or
classrooms to inform students of these events. I can encourage
DHS students to participate in important events by convincing
teachers to give incentives to student participants, through
extra credit or late work passes.
Lastly, through my involvement in my athletics team, robotics
club, and boy scouts, I can promote events to youth on a
personal level.
I have watched a council meeting recording from February 18,
2020, available from the City of Dublin website. The topic/item
which I found most interesting to me was item 3.3., the 2020
St. Patrick's Day Celebration Festivities Report. My reason for
why I was so interested in this item was because this parade
was cancelled due to the virus, and I was curious as to what
would have happened if the parade was never cancelled. The
outcome of the meeting was all the activities and attractions
which would be at the parade - petting zoos, pancake
breakfasts, arts & crafts vendors, a tea cottage, carnival rides,
and many more Irish themed attractions.

1. Why do you want to

City of Dublin Youth
Advisory Committee (YAC)?
Eleanor Murray Fallon Middle School
Grade 6
With the current coronavirus situation I want to help out the
community in any possible way I can.
I have always tried to be active in the community - whether
helping out in public cleaning events, or school event where I
had to fold T-shirts that were donated, or coming up with ideas
to help my neighbors.
Currently, in the coronavirus shelter at home - I am working
with my parents to SAFELY deliver groceries to the vulnerable
in our neighborhood and my community, especially the elderly
and disabled.
As a member of the Youth Advisory Committee, and hopefully
Coronavirus behind us, I would like to play an active part in
developing youth responsibilities and involvement at public
events. I also hope this will give me an opportunity to get to
know the way the City government functions.
2. What skills do you
possess that would make
you a strong candidate for
the YAC?
3. What do you believe are
issues teens in Dublin are
currently dealing with, and
how do you think YAC could
address these issues?
I am a fast learner, a good communicator, and extremely
motivated to make a positive difference.
Besides English, I speak Hindi and can read and write in
Arabic.
My teachers would tell you that I am very good at following
instructions and organized.
With the new coronavirus situation, teens and pre-teens have
been adversely affected.
Playgrounds are closed, close contact is strictly prohibited, and
shelter at home means they can't meet friends.
In these exceptional times the YAC could come up with
3
innovative ways of engaging the youth and keeping them
focused, motivated, physically and mentally fit as well as
learning and most importantly obeying the rules of the
quarantine.
Hopefully, by the time the new YAC is elected, and if I get the
honor to serve, the coronavirus is history! But there may be a
possibility that the virus will reappear in the future, where we
might have to quarantine again, and we, as the youth must be
ready this time to face it with much better preparation.
4. What activities are you
currently involved in or will
be involved in during the
2020-2021 schoolyear, and
will you be able to devote
time each month for YAC

5. How would you get other

community, teen events,
and City-sponsored
activities?
6. Have you recently
attended a YAC or other
Dublin Commission or City
Council meeting? If yes,
Outside of the coronavirus situation, I would like to encourage
the youth to participate in the following programs:
- enjoy the outdoors: there are plenty of beautiful hiking trails
and parks in Dublin and nearby. We need to bring the youth
together, under adult supervision, to participate in these.
- cleanliness: sometimes Dublin residents tend to not leave our
parks in the most cleanest way. I would encourage we have an
information campaign that encourages Dublin youth to speak to
all of their families and friends to pick up after their dogs, leave
the parks benches and tables clean, and not drop any trash
anywhere! We could even gamify this campaign and pick a
winner!
- PS4 championship : teens are hooked on to their electronic
games. I would organize an e-game championship to bring a
positive angle so that Dublin teens can bring their games on to
a city-wide platform and even have their families involved and
cheer them on!
Unfortunately, most of my activities have been cancelled
because of the disruption to school and the shelter in place!
However, I intend to participate in swimming, tennis, basketball
and karate as extracurricular interests. I also am part of the
reading and running club.
Yes, I will have plenty of time to each month for YAC meetings
and activities.
I would reach out to teens in the schools, at the playground, in
parks, on TikTok, and in my neighborhood. I would reach out to
the teens by distributing fliers, getting their phone numbers and
email addresses. I would come up with exciting ways to
communicate - such as memes, gifs, short videos and flyers.
No, I haven't but I was planning to in March, unfortunately it
was cancelled.

Dublin High School
11th grade
I would like to be a member of the youth advisory committee
because I think this is a great way to help my peers out and a
great way to be involved in my community. I hope to learn
about the issues that some of our youth face and learn about
the ways that I can help my community and those individuals. I
would like to be able to provide assistance to my peers and
make our community better for the teens and youth. I think it is
cool that the teens in our community are being given the
opportunity to help other children and teens because as a
member you can probably relate to some of the issues and can
help address the issue better because you may have
experienced some of the same things. Additionally, I think this
is a great opportunity for me to learn more skills about how I
can help others in the future.

will you be able to devote
time each month for YAC
meetings and activities?
5. How would you get other
teens involved in the
community, teen events,
and City-sponsored
activities?
In the past I helped tutor kids, participated in a leadership
program, and spent some of my time volunteering at the animal
shelter. Through these experiences I learned to problem solve,
be organized, and be a leader in some ways. I am also on the
school's tennis team and even though tennis is a relatively
individual or two person sport we did many things that involved
working as a team and being able to cooperate with others. I
believe that I can work well with others, and communicate my
ideas to the people around me. I am also very hard-working,
determined, honest, and responsible.
I think that a lot of times teens deal with a lot of stress and
anxiety and aren’t able to handle it or let go of it. One way to
deal with this could be by opening more wellness centers like
the one at Dublin High. There could be an area where students
can talk about some of the issues that they are dealing with
and try to get help. There could also be events once in a while
where students can try and get rid of their stress and anxiety.
Things like wellness centers can also help if students don’t feel
safe at home. By talking to other students and trusted adults
they might be able to get the help they need. Some teens may
also struggle with not being able to get the help they need with
school work. To help with that more tutoring opportunities or
occasional events can be opened. These are just some of the
issues that the teens in Dublin may be facing right now.
I am involved in some of the clubs at our school such as Key
Club and I plan on continuing to be a part of the clubs at Dublin
High. Additionally, I am on the girl’s tennis team at school and
continue to take lessons outside of school. In the 2020-2021
school year I plan on participating on the school’s tennis team
during the fall, continuing to join clubs, and possibly
participating in the freshmen mentoring program at my school.
Many of these things take place during school hours and
outside of school hours I would participate in tennis and
occasionally volunteer. I won’t have much outside of school so
I will be able to devote time to the YAC meetings and activities.
This is something that I would like to do and will have time to
do.
I think that a lot of times teens don't know about the
opportunities around them. So, in order to get them more
involved I would try and reach out to students and really inform
them about the things around them in the community. I could
use social media to talk about some events and try to get more
people interested in participating. I would also just inform the
teenagers I know about events where I think they could get

I believe we can create the greatest impact in the community
through deep engagement between citizens and local
administration institutions like the education board and city
council. As the only student member of the Dublin Unified
School District Homework Committee, I was able to first hand
witness how the voice of a student can help to positively
influence the academic programs that students go through.
Last year, serving on the Youth Advisory Committee helped me
get a first hand experience of the work the committee does.
Working on the youth mini grant gave me a unique perspective
on how students can have a positive impact on the lives of
other students. I want to continue on this path of citizen
participation.
I believe I strongly embody the three skills that are required to
be an effective member of this council : Care for the
community, Ability to propose & communicate creative
solutions to issues and work in a collaborative fashion with
team members. Serving and giving back to the community is a
core value for me. As an officer for The PCTAV Youth Board I
have experience in setting up volunteer events and following
through on them. Last year I organized a field trip to Glide, Kids
Against Hunger, and Stanford Children’s Hospital. The ability to
come up with creative solutions is key as well. As a member of
both Dublin Mayor’s Council and Youth Advisory Committee I
have experience in sharing my ideas to benefit the lives of
Dublin Teens. Good ideas are only good though if we can
share them with others around us. Communication and Public
Speaking is second nature to me. This past year I was chosen
to be a Virtual Volunteer for The Dublin Public Library. I had to
write reviews on events, movies, and books and give my
opinion on them. I will use what I learned here to give my
opinion on projects the committee does such as The Youth
Mini Grant. Teamwork is a final skill. I am an active member of
DHS’s speech and debate team and in the last few years I

have become a Golden Gavel Recipient (1st place award given
to the top speaker out of 150). I will use my knowledge and
experience on how to talk professionally and confidently in
sharing ideas to help with key team discussions.
The first issue faced by the majority of Dublin Teens is too
much pressure. Dublin teens face a lot of stress in coping with
the demands of their day to day academic excellence and
extra-curricular activities. This is further compounded by peer
pressure and the potential lack of guidance on academic &
career choices. YAC can help work with students across the
city and create mentorship & training opportunities so that
students can discover what is the right path for them. Another
issue faced is a lack of unity. As Dublin Residents we are
fortunate to be living in a community with so much diversity, but
the problem lies in the fact we are unable to share this with
others. Dublin always honors our proud Irish Culture. In this
spirit I want to work with YAC to ensure that the teens in our
community are able to learn about other cultures as well. By
organizing fairs and showcases we can create awareness of
other cultures and create one united Dublin Community.
For the next school year I know I will be involved in 2 key clubs
on campus: Debate and DECA. At a DECA Mini-Con this last
year I placed 2nd in the marketing category and want to
continue this path as well as grow in Speech and Debate. Next
year, I will continue to attend classes at the Art Studio I have
been going to since 5th Grade, and enter competitions I have
won in the past such as the National Celebrating Art Book
(Taylor Swift was published this contest in her childhood as
well), and Dublin Pride Week. Finally, I will continue my
internship with Bay Area Bhangra Empire. I have been an
intern for 1.5 years now and want to continue this job. These
commitments are only once a week, and I know that I will be
able to make time for YAC, as helping the community is
another passion of mine that I would want to continue to
pursue.
I would get other teens involved in many ways. As a member of
multiple clubs, I interact with a large diverse community of
students and parents. I will be able to spread the word on these
events to my fellow club members. Alongside this I can spread
the word on my social media page to further raise awareness
on these important opportunities, like I did last year to promote
YAC’s Benefit Concert and Mini-Grant. Most importantly I will
talk to other teens in the community and encourage citizen
participation. By being a member of the Youth Advisory Council
I will learn more about the events and who they help. This will

for YAC would be responsible, organized, creative, problem-
solver, leader and a great team player.
I believe some issues that teens in Dublin are currently dealing
with is the overcrowding in Dublin schools. The overcrowding is
causing a shortage of activities open for new comers. Since
there is a shortage of activities for teens to join, more kids are
becoming unfit and lazy. YAC could address these issues by
asking Dublin Rec. to make separate age groups for different
activities, on different days. The Dublin Rec. could also have
two of the same age groups go on two different days (ie: ages
11-13 on Mondays and Wednesdays, 14- 16 on Tuesdays and
Thursdays, etc.).
Some activities I am currently involved in are Bhangra (Punjabi
Dance), I might be involved in Junior Warriors during winter of
2020-2021 school year. I will definitely be able to devote time
each month for the YAC meetings and activities.
I will get other teens involved in the community, teen events,
and City-sponsored activities by talking to my friends and fellow
classmates about the wonderful events and activities coming

up. I will even ask my teachers to make announcements during

Yes, I did recently attend a YAC meeting which took place on
December 11, 2019. The outcome of the items that I was
interested in was to see how the Committee members discuss
and decide on appropriate amounts of money which should be
allotted to each of the youth clubs of Dublin to help them be

Dublin High School
11th Grade
I want to become a member of the City of Dublin Youth
Advisory Committee because I have enjoyed all of the
opportunities this committee gave me. I have been part of the
committee during the 2018-2019 year and the 2019-2020 year.
So, this will be my third year being part of such a great
committee, allowing children to take charge and help out their
community. I love being able to give back to the community
especially because it has helped me in so many ways. I want to
continue to be a part of all the volunteering events because it
gives me exposure to places that I wouldn’t have explored
otherwise. I will continue to help fundraise and spread the word
to help the events in Dublin gain more exposure. The most
important part of this committee is being able to come up with
new ideas to help our society thrive.
The skills that I possess that would make me a strong
candidate for YAC is that I am responsible, productive,
respectful, and give my undivided attention to the task at hand.
I am responsible because I put my full commitment into taking
charge and helping my community. I make sure that everyone
can count on me to help get the task done faster. People can
count on me to help them out when they need it. I am
productive because I can complete tasks without being told to,
meaning that there is no need for adult supervision. I am
respectful, meaning that I wait my turn to speak and allow
everyone else to have a chance to share their opinions about
the tasks. Lastly, I can stay focused when I know something
needs to be done. I can also multitask so that we can focus on
completing things at a faster rate.
I believe that the issues teens in Dublin are currently dealing
with are too much stress and transportation issues. Overall,
there is a very big issue transporting from East Dublin to West
Dublin where our high school is currently located. Those living
on the East side have to wake up earlier to reach school on

time. Now, it takes almost an hour to reach school. Due to the
congestion, students are losing their sleep because they go to
sleep late due to the excessive homework. Therefore, most of
the students are under a lot of stress of finishing their
homework at a decent time in order to go to sleep on time.
YAC could address this issue by talking about this with the
fellow members and trying to find a solution which may work
out better for everyone.
Currently, I do not know what activities I will be involved in
during the 2020-2021 school year. But, I am currently the
president of the Teens Unite For Education club, Youth
Advisory Committee and I enjoy volunteering at special events.
The Teens United for Education Club is a club where teens
from Dublin come together to help local underprivileged kids. I
will also be devoting a little bit of time to get myself out a little
bit more and explore new locations to volunteer over the
weekends. Overall, I will be able to devote time each month
and for the YAC meetings and activities.
I would be able to get other teens involved in the community,
teen events, and other City sponsored activities by letting my
peers and teachers know about the events. I can talk to my
teachers to spread the word to their other classes. I can also
put up flyers around the school and upload them onto social
media. I will also be able to do anything that is needed to
promote and spread the word for the events.
I am currently part of the committee and I have attended all the
Youth Advisory Committee meetings because I am part of the
2019-2020 year. The most recent one I attended was
Wednesday, February 26, 2020. The items that I was most
interested in were promoting the Youth Benefit Concert, Teen
Job and Career Fair and the Saint Patrick's Day Festival. The
items for the Benefit Concert and the Teen Job and Career Fair
was to promote it so that we can have more people take part in
the show. Lastly the Saint Patrick’s Day Festival was there for
us to volunteer at the booth to help raise more funds for the
Youth Fee assistance program.

I want to become a member of the Dublin Youth Advisory
Committee so I can participate in the City's effort to provide the
youth with programs that interest them. This is a crucial
development phase and any effort to channel the talent, vision,
and skills of today's youth will result in a better tomorrow.
I am easy to talk to and I love to help out whenever I can. I
manage my schedule very well and I'm willing to take on
responsibility. I am involved in the community through after
school activities, clubs, sports, and volunteering. This puts me
in touch with many teenagers and helps me become their
voice.
Some issues that many teens are currently dealing with
includes stress and peer pressure. Stress and peer pressure
could be decreased if the youth in the City of Dublin have
activities that could help them see themselves in a different
light.
During the 2020-2021 school year, I will be involved with cross
country and track and field. Yes, I will still be able to devote
time each month for YAC meetings and activities.
I meet a lot of youth through the activites that I am involved in. I
can have a conversation about what activites they are involved
in and inform them about the City-sponsored activities, teen,
and community events. I can also use social media to spread
the word.

I want to become a member of the Youth Advisory Committee
because I want to help create activities and programs that will
benefit the youth of Dublin. I want the youth to feel that the
programs support their growth and help them achieve their
goals.
I have excellent communication skills and I am very organized.
I am able to lead others and work as a team while making good
decisions. I am comfortable expressing my opinion and I listen
to other people's thoughts and concerns so that I can advocate
for them. But most importantly, I care about my city and my
community.
I believe that some issues that teens in Dublin are dealing with
is academic and social pressure. Some ways we could address
these issues are by promoting programs that focus on fostering
different skills that show the youth that they don’t need all the
same skill sets to get into colleges, to be successful, or to fit in.
I am currently involved in my school’s cross country and track

I will be able to devote time each month for the meetings and
weekend volunteering opportunities.
I will get other teens involved in the community, teen events,

media, putting up posters, and passing out flyers. I would also
inform my friends by talking to them and sharing information
about such activities.

1. Why do you want to

Dublin High School
11th
I want to become a member of the Dublin Advisory Committee
because I want to make an impact on my fellow peers. I believe
that kids can make such a big impact on their community.
Students have a different insight from adults and can bring a
whole new perspective. In my own life, I doubted myself before
because I always thought that people were smarter than me
and I let myself think that everyone was better than me. It took
me a while to realize that I am just as capable as any other
student and I deserve to have my voice heard. I have a strong
desire to make my community a better place. I have always
imagined myself coming back from college and to my home
knowing that I made an impact and that I was part of something
that helped Dublin come together. I want to put my input in how
we can improve Dublin as a community. I know that being a
member of the Dublin Youth Advisory Committee would allow
me to gain experiences that will benefit me in the future. This is
important to me because I want to make a difference and I
want to make people in our community happy. Just making one
person happy lights up my day. I remember helping out the
senior center, I helped pass out food and I got a chance to
listen to stories from the elders about their lives. It was a much
memorable experience for me because that was when I
realized how much I loved this community. After all, it taught
me to cherish the time I have and I want to use that time to
make an impact on our community.
2. What skills do you
possess that would make
you a strong candidate for
the YAC?
I am very driven and passionate about making a change. I
genuinely care about making a change especially at a time like
this with the COVID-19 situation. I am very enthusiastic about
helping others and I want to share my creative ideas and my
leadership skills. I have a positive attitude and try to make
others feel safe and happy around me. I believe in integrity and
owning up to my actions. I ask for help when I need it because
when growing up one of the things that has stuck with me is

that you should never apologize or feel embarrassed for
needing help. I am very proactive and try to do more of what's
expected of me not just as a student but as a sister, friend, and
daughter. I have always been myself and stick to my own
opinions and not anyone else's. My eagerness to learn more
always motivates me to try my best and work hard. I believe
that I am a good candidate because I am creative and quick to
work under pressure. I have a fun personality and like to be
very open-minded about things. I also think that the key to
being successful in maintaining a good relationship with those
around me and the peers that I work with. One of the things
that I accomplished in the past year is that I stopped doubting
myself and pushing myself out of my comfort zone and
accepting that it's okay to make mistakes.
Teens are constantly worrying about their future and what
career they want to get into and that is a lot of pressure. I know
from my experience that I constantly have this stress on myself
about the future. Everybody wants to accelerate but with that
comes anxiety and stress. I think YAC is a great place to
discuss these issues because it's made up of students who are
most likely going through the same. I know we have
counselors, and wellness centers for teens going through this
but most students don’t use these resources because they are
too scared and are not ready to share their feelings. YAC can
help set up resources virtually for kids that are going through
stress and anxiety. I also feel that COVID-19 has become such
a big issue all around the world and because of that there will
be students who are scared and will need someone to talk to. I
also see that right now in this world there is a lot of competition
and stress around teens. A way we can help is by organizing
events for teens to attend with their friends, and this could give
them a chance to meet new people as well.
I work at my part time job at Kumon every Wednesday from 5-
6:30AM and Saturdays from 9-12PM. In this job, I dedicate my
time to grade Math and English workbooks and helping kids
who are struggling with problems. I am also involved in many
clubs but the main club I am most involved in is the Pre-Med
Society club and Key club. The Pre- Med Society club gives me
a chance to volunteer at hospitals and learn about the different
fields because I hope to pursue a career in the medical field
one day. Key club allows me to do what I love which is
volunteering to better my community and being the editor I get
to have fun with my hobby of creating visuals and managing
the social media of the club. I know that I am very good at time
management, which means doing homework during my free
period and studying when I get home or before work and the

meeting. I like to be efficient in planning my day and how I will
accomplish things throughout the week. I know that I will have
my full attention to the committee because I am really
passionate about making a change and this is what I want to
devote my time to.
I am part of the board in Key club at my school. Being part of
the board allows me to find events that students would like to
volunteer at. Most teens don't attend community events-or
activities because they don't know about them. Being a part of
this club gives me an opportunity to get students to attend
whether it be volunteering or earning points for points in our
club by attending. I used to be very uninformed about the
events that happened in our community. I joined many clubs
and had the chance to learn more about these events like
Splatter, St.Patrick's day festival, and other volunteering
opportunities. Clubs are a great way to promote events that are
happening in the community. Social media is also a big
platform which most kids use. Social Media is a great way to
get people involved and active in the community by posting
information about the different events that people could be
involved in. We can get many teens to get involved by giving
them chances to volunteer at these events, this could be a
great way for everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves.

1. Why do you want to
become a member of the
City of Dublin Youth
Advisory Committee (YAC)?
The Quarry Lane School
Junior Year(11th Grade)
I have always been extremely passionate about giving back to
our society. As a current sophomore, I am working on
establishing an NGO called SHE: Sustainable Heard and
Empowered, where a group of my friends are working towards
empowering women in our society. By collaborating with
another major organization, we are going to be conducting
outreach sessions with the cities of Dublin, San Ramon,
Pleasanton, Fremont and San Jose to further raise awareness
about women empowerment. This is an example of how, with
the help of my peers, communities can come together to make
an important change in our society. I am extremely passionate
about this, and will be able to bring the teens of our community
together, in order to listen to their concerns and help the teen
environment of Dublin become successful and fulfilled. Instead
of listening to the complaints or concerns about our society, I
want to be a part of the change-making team. Ages 13-18 are
one of the most crucial years of a students life. They have to
balance their social and academic lives. Some teens tend to
get stressed out due to the pressure society imposes on them.
I want this to change; the teen years should be a fulfilling
experience, not a stressful and pressurized series of years. My
main goal is to become the teen voice of dublin along with
those who will be working along with me to create a positive
change in our society. I will be working towards creating
solutions which will not only have an impact of our current
youngsters, but the teens of tomorrow as well.
2. What skills do you
possess that would make
you a strong candidate for
the YAC?
I have always been fond of expressing my opinions and
reaching out to others when necessary. Instead of being the
child who was in the background keeping her opinions to
herself, I stood up and represented my peers. Yet, I do not
possess an “overpowering” quality where the opinions of others
are oppressed. I passionately listen to the thoughts of others in
order to do what is best. Instead of creating a leadership role
3

for myself, I will build a team of strong and powerful youth. I
always live by the saying “we are the pillars of tomorrow.” I am
a young girl residing in Dublin, and I look and deal with the
problems the youth of our society are facing every day. By
becoming a member of the YAC, I will be able to address these
problems and work with my fellow peers to find a solution to it. I
will look at long-term, not short-term solutions which means I
will look for solutions that will not only benefit my generation,
but future generations. Along with this, I am dedicated towards
each and every thing I do. I do not do activities for the sake of
doing them. Becoming a member of the Youth Advisory
Committee of Dublin is extremely important for me since this
society has been providing for me and my peers since a young
age. This is the time I give back. By bringing the youth of
Dublin together, we all as the pillars of tomorrow will be able to
recognize the problems we are facing as a society, come
together to form solutions to put an end to it along with
preventing it from happening in the future. Like I have
previously mentioned, we are not only working towards short
term solutions but mainly long term solutions. It is important
that we put an end to these problems for the betterment of our
society. We will be able to focus on issues that may rise
tomorrow, if we put an end to those from today.
The main issue I believe teens in Dublin are facing is peer
pressure. We as a society have developed ourselves in a way,
where if individuals are not at the top along with being the
portraying the perfect persona, their future plans seem to fall
under doubt. What needs to be understood by individuals, is
that life always provides you with a second chance. Instead of
getting demotivated, the teens of Dublin need to learn how to
improve their self confidence. This will lead them to believing in
themselves. Children will not succumb to negative influences
such as drugs and alcohol if they have a support system
around them. Telling children from an early age that drugs and
alcohol are harmful to the body will only educate them, not stop
them from doing so. Instead, we as a society need to analyze
why children fall into the unfortunate trap of drugs and alcohol
to prevent it from happening. Statistics show that teens have
been using it as a distraction from their problems since they do
not believe in themselves. They must be taught and
empowered from a young age. They should be taught that one
has to be self confident to succeed, and their success does not
depend on the success or failures of their peers. Their success
depends on themselves. Children need to be taught how to set
expectations for themselves, instead of trying and living up to
the expectations of others. This will not take children to heights,

yet will instead will throw them under the constant loop of
pressure.
I am currently involved in Speech and Debate/Model United
Nations. I am part of a non-profit youth organization called
Amrita Yuva Dhara Dharma(AYUDH) where we take many
initiatives and conduct many projects that abide to the United
Nations Sustainability Goals. Every year in our annual youth
summit that takes place in the MA Center Chicago, we vote on
the top three sustainable development goals that we want to
work towards every year. Recently, we took part in an up-
cycling initiative. Here, we collected plastic bottles and many
other products and planted plants in them to protect our
environment. We also went to San Francisco and provided
many homeless people with food and other basic necessities.
The reason I am so passionate about AYUDH, is because it
once again leads back to the central theme of giving back to
the society that has provided us all with so much. All of the
activities I have mentioned here relate back to giving back to
society. With my speech and debate skills, I will be able to
express my thoughts and become a voice for the youth of my
community. With my Model United Nations skills, I will be able
to negotiate with my fellow peers, working to find a solution that
will be beneficial. Lastly, with all the volunteering habits I have
attained, I will be able to work with my fellow peers as a team,
not an individual. The Dublin Youth Advisory Committee will be
a perfect platform for me to reach out and assist our society. All
the activities that I do outside of school somehow relate to my
passions and my goal in life. I will keep The Dublin Youth
Advisory Committee as a top priority and will do the best of my
ability to help and decide what is best for the youth of Dublin.
I will conduct outreach sessions at my school in order to raise
awareness. With the assistance of my team, I will organize a
city wide event where we have an open panel discussion
regarding the issues teens are facing and how we can
overcome that as a society. I will work my way to get feedback
from the teens of Dublin by conducting surveys to see how we
can help them for the betterment of our city. All the events that
will be hosted will be interactive and interesting which will urge
many of our youngsters to join. The events that we host will be
teen interactive which will motivate the teens to join. I will also
be open to starting a club in my school for the Dublin City
Council. Through that, I can form a community of teens who
attend my school to join this process of creating awareness.
Children should be educated at a young age that being an
important voice of their community is extremely crucial. The
main processes I will work towards are raising awareness, and

initiating outreach sessions as a community, and also smaller
outreach sessions for it to be more interactive. Lastly, I will
work to get the teens of Dublin involved in such activities for
them to recognize the true fact, that they are an important
component of Dublin. This will lead to them being more
comfortable to reach out and express their concerns.
I have not attended any of such meetings, yet I am excited to
do so in the future.

The Athenian School
11th Grade
I would love to have the privilege of being a member on the
City of Dublin Youth Advisory Committee to be able to learn
about local government, inflict positive change on Dublin, and
most importantly, have the opportunity to take initiative and
have input on various projects and endeavors. There are very
few programs that allow students to truly have a voice in local
government and the decisions that affect Dublin youth, which
really makes the Youth Advisory Committee stand out amongst
other programs. The diversity in voices and opinions that I have
seen and experienced throughout my first and second terms of
being a member on the committee truly reflects the youth of
Dublin, and I would love to continue to be a part of the
democracy in action that the committee embodies.
I believe that the most distinctive trait about me that differs from
other candidates is the fact that I have experiences from going
to a school in Dublin and a school in Danville. I believe that I
would bring a fresh perspective to the table given my different
experiences in such schools and communities. My school is
very different from the elementary school that I attended in
Dublin, but through both schools I have learned to become an
independent and critical thinker. The school I attend now prides
itself on its emphasis on democracy in action, and it makes an
effort to include student voice into every major decision the
school makes. Through this I have learned the importance of
everyone’s voice and vote in decisions. I also believe that
another skill that I possess is leadership. As well as being a
current member of the YAC, I am a student ambassador for my
school and a stage manager for my school’s theatre program,
which has taught me more about leadership under a stressful
environment than I ever could have imagined. I truly believe
that my fresh perspective and leadership skills make me a
strong candidate for the Youth Advisory Committee.

A large issue I have seen in Dublin teens has been the lack of
teen-only activities that Dublin offers. I believe that the YAC
could address this issue by promoting more outside of school
activities and programs for teens. Another issue I have noticed
has been the lack of connection between Dublin teens at the
public schools and the Dublin teens at private schools (Valley
Christian, Quarry Lane, etc), as well as between the
homeschooled teens of Dublin. I believe that by promoting teen
activities for ALL Dublin youth and teens, the YAC could have a
positive impact on these estrangements between Dublin teens.
I will be participating in Cross Country, Track, and Varsity
Women’s basketball at my school, however, these activities did
not have a large interference will my participation in the YAC
this year, and I don’t believe they will hinder my ability to
participate in the YAC this upcoming year. I will also be in
Theatre Tech, which only requires time outside of school during
the two tech weeks during the year (November and February). I
will also have various inside of school activities, such as being
a student ambassador and my entrepreneurship course, but
those will also not affect my YAC attendance.
I think I will be able to get teens not attending Dublin’s public
schools involved with Dublin activities due to personal and
school connections. I also have a strong connection with
Empower Martial Arts (formally Shir Martial Arts), which gives
me access to many Dublin teens and a platform to promote
various Dublin activities.

1. Why do you want to
become a member of the
City of Dublin Youth
Advisory Committee (YAC)?
2. What skills do you
possess that would make
you a strong candidate for
the YAC?
Dublin High School
12th Grade
I am extremely passionate about serving in my community and
having a say in events and activities that pertain to the youth.
Although there are many ways in which I contribute to my
community outside of the Youth Advisory Committee, YAC
allows me to work with a group of Dublin youth who equally
share my passion. I really enjoy the former manner in which all
of the Youth Advisory Committee meetings are conducted.
Every Youth Advisory Committee meeting follows bylaws which
allow its participants to have a clear and organized discussion
regarding the community. YAC is extremely important as it
gives the youth in Dublin a voice. The main reason I want to be
a member of YAC is because I know the importance of having
a voice in your community; I want to represent the youth of
Dublin in a manner in which everyone’s voice is heard. I have
been a Dublin resident for the entirety of my life, allowing me to
grow up with much of the Dublin community and create many
intricate relationships with the Dublin Youth and I would like to
be able to do my part in serving them. A large percentage of
the Dublin population is under 18 and I believe that it is
extremely important that they are able to take part in programs
and activities in Dublin that are tailored towards them. As a
member of the youth advisory committee, I will be able to
competently represent the Dublin youth and ensure that the
activities in Dublin are well known, ensuring that everyone with
an interest is able to participate.
I would make a strong candidate for the Youth Advisory
Committee because I am able to communicate well with others,
as I take the time to comprehend the needs of those around
me. As a voice of the youth in the community, I feel it is vital for
me to be able to listen and communicate with the community in
order to represent them. When working in groups and as a
leader, I always take into account everyone’s input and
opinions when making a decision for a group. I make sure that
everyone is represented and no one feels as if they are not

being heard. I will, therefore, be able to bridge the gap between
the youth of Dublin and City of Dublin government officials At
Dublin High School, I have been in the Engineering Academy
in which I have worked on numerous innovative group projects.
We, as engineers, are always working to better our inventions
which require lots of group brainstorming and decision making.
This has given me practice stepping up as a leader, organizing
diverse thoughts, and coming up with a decision that everyone
is passionate about and agrees with. Communication skills are
important when it comes to working with any kind of group: be
it engineering groups, Youth Advisory Committee, or Dublin
Youth as a whole. Another skill I have is being extremely
dedicated to all my work, and being able to efficiently juggle
several extracurriculars at once. When assigned a certain task,
I will work diligently until I have created the best-finished
product. I always put forth my best effort and make sure that I
am proud of all my work. As a member of the YAC, I will be
fully committed to the community and will give the committee
my best effort at all times.
One issue that teens in Dublin are currently facing is that due
to that large amount of students, it is extremely hard to find and
take part in the activities and programs they are interested in.
With the increasing size of Dublin’s youth comes increasing
competition to get into many programs. I feel that this is very
unfortunate because it prevents many students from being able
to pursue their passions and participate in certain
extracurriculars. Along with this many teens are uninformed on
a lot of the activities and programs they can join. I personally
dealt with this during my freshman year when I was new to
Dublin High. I was unsure about what my passions were and
what activities I could join outside of school that would allow
me to pursue what I am passionate about. Since there are so
many students at Dublin high it was very easy for me to lose
sight of what my interests were. The YAC could address this
issue by publicizing the activities and programs we already
have in Dublin. YAC could also take into account the input of
Dublin youth and implement new programs and activities that
match their passions. I think that it is extremely important for
young people to be surrounded by like-minded people and
have the opportunity to pursue their ambitions. YAC can
ensure that passionate students are able to easily have and
find these opportunities.
4. What activities are you
currently involved in or will
be involved in during the
2020-2021 schoolyear, and
I am currently a part of the Dublin High Track and Field team,
along with numerous community service clubs on the Dublin
High campus: CSF, Interact, and Kids Against Hunger. I also
plan on joining DECA in the 2020-2021 school year. These

activities have broadened the number of Dublin youth that I get
to communicate and create relationships with. I put forth my
best effort in all of these extracurriculars because I am
passionate about them and enjoy taking part in clubs and
teams. I know that I will be able to devote my time to the YAC
because I am passionate about having a voice in the events in
my community. Along with this, I know how to manage my time;
I have been participating in extracurriculars while taking
rigorous classes throughout high school and this has taught me
to always plan ahead. I create a schedule at the beginning of
the week so that I always know what I need to get done and
when. This prevents me from forgetting anything and allows me
to try my best on all assignments. I participated in the YAC my
sophomore year, and by creating a schedule at the beginning
of the week I always knew when I had to devote time to which
activity.
As mentioned in previous responses, I take part in numerous
Dublin activities which have allowed me to communicate with a
great amount of the Dublin youth. Due to my personal desire to
be involved in the community, I already inform many of my
peers about Dublin events, however, through the YAC I can
help to create activities and programs that are tailored to the
passions of the Dublin youth. I know from personal experience
that when teens are passionate about something they are more
likely to get others involved. I want to be a voice for members
of the Dublin youth who feel their opinions are disenfranchised
and activities don't match their passions. I want to be able to
help students try to figure out what they are passionate about
by directing them to activities based upon their personal and
niche interests. I believe that the YAC will give me a platform to
help more teens get involved in their community on issues they
are passionate about. For example, I am passionate about
keeping our community clean and am working on creating a
club alongside other students this upcoming year surrounding
this issue. Being on YAC would provide me a greater platform
to give such pressing issues support. Along with this, one
challenge of the activities that take place in Dublin is that
events and activities that do take place are not publicized
enough. In order to get more teens involved in events, the
events should be marketed on more teen-friendly platforms like
social media or setting up direct text reminders. By publicizing
through various digital media channels and utilizing the
connections with the Dublin youth I have created through my
participation in extracurriculars, I can encourage other teens
involved in the community, teen events, and City-sponsored
activities.

6. Have you recently
attended a YAC or other
Dublin Commission or City
Council meeting? If yes,
what wasthemeetingdate
and what was the outcome
of the item(s) you were
interested in?
I was a member of the Youth Advisory Committee during the
2018-2019 term and attended all of the meetings of this term.
One meeting during this term that especially stuck out to me
was on February 27th, 2019 and the committee discussed the
recruitment process for the 2019-2020 Youth Advisory
Committee and Student Representative to the Parks and
Community Services Commission. The outcome of this
meeting was discussing reapplication procedures for the
current committee and raising awareness about how other
Dublin Youth can also apply to join YAC as well. I think the
YAC is extremely important, and a really good opportunity for
students who want to have a greater say in the activities in their
community, such as myself. Due to this, I felt as if discussing
the ways the committee could be publicized to offer people the
opportunity was important. A major accomplishment of that
term of the Youth Advisory Committee was the Youth Grant
Program which funded numerous Youth programs in Dublin to
support their cause. The Youth Grant is very beneficial as it
helps to fund activities that the youth of Dublin are passionate
about. General outcomes of these meetings are getting a
consensus of what activities and events are taking place in
Dublin at the time, and giving personal input on how certain
events should occur and what can be changed. I enjoy being
able to voice my input and the input of other Dublin youth
regarding youth events.

Quarry Lane School
Junior, 11th Grade
In my entire lifetime, I have lived in the City of Dublin as a
bystander, witnessing the actions and decisions that take place
in my community. I want to become a member in the City of
Dublin Youth Advisory Committee because I hope to improve
the city I have seen grow for the past decade and learn about
our city's government. This inspiration stems from my strong
desire to live a life of public service, and the Youth Advisory
Committee would act as a pivotal foundation to fulfill this goal
by helping the youth in the City of Dublin. As an active member
of my community, I believe I have significantly absorbed our
community's values; therefore, I can accurately represent the
youth in the City of Dublin by being a part of the Youth Advisory
Committee. Currently, a great deal of political and social
discord encompass the lives of many youths, inclining my will
to contribute to the Youth Advisory Committee. My primary
vision as part of this council would be to apply and discover the
importance of collaboration, push for reforms, and understand
the responsibility to lead the youth of this city to believe a
unifying objective. Becoming a member of the Youth Advisory
Committee would provide practical insight and knowledge on
being a political leader in our local community which would
reflect the change we all strive to gain in our lives. I will serve
as a positive and helpful addition to the council by working hard
to meet and exceed expectations of myself and of this Council.
I am often regarded as a strong leader by many of my peers
and teachers; however, I had to acquire this instrumental skill.
In my humble opinion, a leader is a subjective term to describe
one's ability to command in a certain facet, but it comes with a
great amount of prowess and creativity. There are defined traits
and attributes that follow the respect and humility of a leader,
such as the arts of caring, communicating, organizing,
inquiring, open-mindedness, and having a reflective and
principled intention, which all create the basis of leadership. I
have developed these strengths through a multitude of

experiences by practicing them every day. This can extend
from leading class discussions and seminars to hosting and
managing all canvassing and phone-banking events in the Tri-
Valley for the 2020 Bernie Sanders Presidential Campaign. I
wish to carry on, hone and perfect these skills while being part
of the Youth Advisory Committee.
I would like to see more implementation of political involvement
and opportunity in the youth of this city. As a firm believer in
civic engagement and service, I feel it the duty of all youth to
partake in a form of community service. I believe that the youth
should gain more knowledge about local policies and politics so
they can become active contributors in their community. This
can be accomplished by incentivizing youth participation and
attendance during meetings to gain invaluable input. In
addition, I think it is imperative to introduce community
workshops to the youth in the City of Dublin, covering a wide
variety of topics to help fill the gaps that students may have.
For instance, the application of mental health programs, voting
education for those who require assistance, and more outreach
opportunities for the youth would build a library of resources for
the youth to choose from. These educational programs and
resources shall be kept readily available and accessible for
youth in Dublin. I do not consider myself an omnipotent
individual, so I would also like to gauge the interest of the youth
in Dublin and the Advisory Committee itself by taking surveys
and analyzing an apparatus of data together to create the best
integrations in the City of Dublin.
I immensely involved myself in a variety of extracurricular
activities to gain leadership and social activism experiences.
For instance, for the past two years in high school at Quarry
Lane, I have had an elected role in Student Council, serving as
the Vice-President of Freshman class, and this year, a large
presence as the Student Body Publicity Officer, in charge of
fundraising and social media efforts. Working in these
capacities taught me to be accountable for my duties, spanning
from picking up the pizza to sell during lunch, or organizing
school-wide rallies or dances. In layman's terms, it is a
rewarding experience to help, in any way, shape, or form.
Nevertheless, I was exclusively selected as a Head Student
Ambassador at my school, where I helped new students adapt
to the new academic environment and delivered public
speeches and tours to new families. This experience was
fruitful as I was able to gregariously welcome guests by
providing tours, one-on-one talks, and brief friendly lectures
regarding the school’s mission and history. Beyond my
academic and co-curricular activities, I do remain politically

active in many campaigns, but those are ephemeral based on
demand in an election season. I remain diligent in my time
management and would like to demonstrate the same energy
and passion to the Youth Advisory Committee. I can ardently
bring these leadership skills in the Youth Advisory Committee
and will actively participate in the council’s agenda to improve
the youth’s needs in the City of Dublin.
The generation we currently live in is built on a foundation of
social media and technological awareness. Thus, I would want
to integrate an emphasis on building social media infrastructure
in platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. In addition to an
increased social media presence, I would focus on more
traditional methods of communicating like general word of
mouth marketing, flyers, or posters on any hosted communal
events. Due to the fact that I attend a private school, many of
my peers are unaware of community held events, so with any
advertising that takes place, information will be able to reach
an entirely new diaspora of students. I believe the premise of
creating urgency on topics where students can collaborate,
manifest solutions, and have fun in order to instill a more
wholesome involvement within the youth in the City of Dublin.
In the past, I have attended a Youth Advisory Committee
session. On Wednesday, December 11th, 2019, as part of the
Quarry Lane Environmental Club, a couple of my peers and I
gave a mini-grant presentation to the Youth Advisory Council in
efforts of attaining $600 dollars as part of our club's
environmental restoration plans in our school. After all
presentations ended, the committee generously fulfilled $400
dollars of funding, which we have since utilized. I would
personally like to thank the committee members for allocating
those funds to our club as they have come in great use for our
club projects and ventures.

4. What activities are
you currently involved
in or will be involved in
during the 2020-2021
school year, and will
you be able to devote

YAC meetings and
activities?
I want to become a member of YAC because I see it as a great
opportunity for me to help my community. I have been a Dublin
citizens my entire life, and Dublin has given me so many
opportunities, I would like to give back to my community in any
way possible.
Three things; my problem solving, active listening, and teamwork
skills. Last summer I had the opportunity to attend the Wharton
School of Business for the KWHS( Knowledge at Wharton High
School) summer program in the month of July. Two week
summer program, learning about entrepreneurship, business
management, economics, marketing all from Wharton
professors. At the end of the program, my team and had to
create a start up. I was the CMO, helped develop ways of
outreach to get our idea out into the world. Using my knowledge
from what I learned from classes about indirect, direct marketing,
target segments and the advertising. But each step of the way
we ran into disagreements and bad decision making. I did not
always agree with what my team had to say but I still listened to
their ideas for our company, and was able to correlate their ideas
with mine to hep better the team. Lastly, whenever a problem
would hit me, I would think of ways around the problem and
never give up. We placed 4th out of 12 teams.
The main issues I see around the Dublin community are students
not being financially literate and meaningless bullying. I believe
YAC could host events about Financial Literacy and it’s
importance. Also, I know bullying seems like a very repetitive
subject, but it is something I am passionate for because I’ve
been bullied before because I was an Asian playing baseball with
an all white team. Kids nowadays make fun of others without
care and they just laugh. Yet they don’t realize they are hurting
others, in more ways they can imagine. I think a bullying
campaign would be a great idea, especially if it affiliated with the
City of Dublin. Have gatherings for students who have
experienced bullying and possibly have presentations for ways to
prevent bullying at local schools.
1. The Dublin Shield; Business Editor; Created business column
for school newsletter related to financial and other business
aspects. This online platform was a beneficial resource for
students at DHS as well schools in the East Bay. Interviewed
with business professionals from Merrill Lynch Corp, to get their
opinion of the importance of personal finance. The magazine
also included references from college counselors about saving
for college. As well as how local businesses are being affected
by environmental factors.
2. Dublin Financial Literacy: Financial Literacy and Leadership
Initiative was a project I co-founded and served as Club
President. The goal of this project was to educate the next
generation of students with a better idea about personal finance.
So later in the future students are more capable of making better
money habits. Giving presentations to over 100 middle schoolers
in the AVID program from Fallon and Wells Middle school, about
better money habits. As well as hosting Investment Competitions
on a virtual stock exchange so students at Dublin High could
learn about Investing and the S&P 500.
3. Choir Club; Always had a passion for singing. It was a good
way to escape stress and have fun. I founded the choir club, as
president I reached out to senior centers, veteran shelters, and
doctor offices for cancer patients and was able to setup events
where we would sing songs to help put a smile on their faces.
Also, had school gatherings during the year, as it was a good
way for students to take a break from school and try something
new that could help their stress levels.
4. Dublin High School ASB Leadership; As a school
Ambassador, I would welcome students and parents on check-in
weekend, helping new arrivals feel at home. Provide tours of the
local area showing students the best places to shop, eat and
have fun. Support with hosting and organising social events.
Encourage students to get involved in events and activities. Did
an event with my leadership group leading an event for incoming
freshman giving them a tour around campus and providing them
with a brief presentation about life at DHS.
5. Sports; I play two sports, baseball and football. 2 years of both
sports so far.
6. Economics; Vice President and Economics Club Captain of
lower division team. Taught lower class men about economics
and had the economics teacher at our school give lectures
personally for our club. The purpose of the Economics Club is to
provide students with a chance to debate and further develop
their understanding of economic and business issues and how
they relate to the world at large. We accomplished this goal
through meetings, debates, and competitions. Competed in
National Economics Challenge with my team.
7. CSF: Member of CSF for all 2 years of High School.
8. Dublin Mayors Council: Member and Co-project manager for
Financial Literacy
9. Speech and Debate; Speech Captain: Competed in
competitions, was mostly focused on speech and did debate
occasionally. Taught students interested in speech about the little
things they need to know at competitions in order for them to
succeed.
10. DECA; Member and Competitor; Competed in DECA
Competition at Amador Valley placed 3rd out of 40 Participants in
marketing. As well as placed 2nd for team decision making at
Dublin High Competition.
5. How would you get

6. Have you recently
attended a YAC or
other Dublin
Commission or City
Council meeting? If
yes, what was the

I will make it my priority. I promise! Thank you for your
consideration
Being the outgoing person I am I would go up to students at my
school, start conversation tell them about events happening in
the community and why it can be beneficial for them. Post
upcoming events on my social media, since nowadays teens are
on their phones 24/7. Since I am apart of the leadership program
at DHS, I could talk to my leadership teacher who makes
announcements everyday on the school system and have him
announce upcoming events the City of Dublin is hosting. I also
write for the Dublin Shield, and can talk to my Chief of staff about
writing an article about upcoming events.

The Quarry Lane School
10th grade
As a young girl living in Dublin, CA, it is imperative that I strive
to better my community, whether it is through my school or on
a city-wide platform. The Youth Advisory Committee is a venue
in which I can voice my opinions/ideas and foster a sense of
community spirit. Advocating for what I believe in and
organizing events, I can indirectly enhance the Dublin
community to make it a more accepting and vibrant place to
live in for young adults. I would love to not only appreciate, but
also sustain diverse viewpoints that can be taken into
consideration to lead a positive impact in our Dublin
community.
Giving back to my community and volunteering has always
been a passion of mine because it allows me to connect with
the youth. By listening to their problems and proposing
solutions, I discovered a method to understand the community
around me and actively engage with the people. The Youth
Advisory Committee allows for me to acquire more knowledge
and gain exposure towards the various issues facing teens in
Dublin, equipping me with a unique lens to view the world.
Constantly striving to make a mark in my community, I am in an
eternal pursuit to improve and advance the city of Dublin. By
being observant and identifying key obstacles in the
community, I am able to work towards a long-term effective
solution for these problems that can be upheld for years to
come. Aside from bringing my ideas to the table, I am an
extremely open-minded member of the Dublin community.
Always looking for new adventures and experiences, I am fond
of trying new things and incorporating everyone’s ideas. I enjoy
working in group settings and appreciate team members’
inputs, believing that the best results are often reached through
a collaborative effort.
My essence is characterized with the “4 C-adjectives”:
3
3. What do you believe are
issues teens in Dublin are
currently dealing with, and
how do you think YAC could
address these issues?
4. What activities are you
currently involved in or will
be involved in during the
2020-2021 schoolyear, and
will you be able to devote
time each month for YAC
meetings and activities?
Competent, Confident, Credible and Committed. In addition, I
bring in a whirlwind of positivity and unbridled enthusiasm that
can uplift and energize city events. Since I am a student at the
Quarry Lane School, I can facilitate the clear and effective
delivery of information back to the student body through
announcements and flyers.
1) One prominent issue that currently faces the teens in Dublin
is the plastic pollution throughout our city. Although Dublin has
implemented many programs to reduce the amount of plastic
accumulation, such as introducing composting in most places,
the environment can be further preserved by taking some
simple yet innovative steps. The Youth Advisory Committee
could implement a program to ensure that all teens are
educated about the importance of clean-up efforts so that we
can all join together in solidarity to become active stewards of
our planet. In addition, Dublin’s YAC could use the concept of
‘plogging’ to encourage the protection of our planet. Plogging is
the combination of jogging and picking up litter, a way to
encourage both environmental awareness and physical activity
for all community members. The Youth Advisory Committee
could popularize this as a unique and interactive method to feel
a part of and improve the Dublin community.
2) Anti-drug campaign that promotes awareness about the
paramount importance of not using drugs. Drug usage has
become a prevalent problem especially in our Dublin
community. Since YAC is comprised of fellow teens in the
community, our opinions in anti-drug campaign can resonate
better with peers and make them more receptive to changing
their perspective against drug use. YAC could champion a city-
wide, week-long anti-drug movement to sway public opinion
against the use of drugs and guide teens towards the right path
to success.
As an integral member of my school’s Environmental Club, I
actively participate in various projects such as clean-up efforts,
implementing rain gardens throughout the school campus, and
organizing several environmental workshops. Also, I am an
advocate for the currently under-represented rare disease
community as I believe that these patients have a story to
share and deserve to be heard. As a part of my role as an
advocate, I have used my passion for moviemaking and editing
to create a documentary to spread this message of hope and
raise awareness about the current situation. Next year, I will
continue to further my reach in the rare disease community and
possibly create more documentaries to share this message.
4
5. How would you get other
teens involved in the
community, teen events,
and City-sponsored
activities?
6. Have you recently
attended a YAC or other
Dublin Commission or City
Council meeting? If yes,
what wasthemeetingdate
and what was the outcome
of the item(s) you were
interested in?
I will certainly be able to devote time for YAC activities and
meetings each month. I am skilled at time management, and
my organization skills will help me organize my schedule on a
daily basis and make sure that I prioritize YAC. If, at any point
in time, any of my extracurricular activities after-school clashes
with a YAC meeting or event, I will make it a point to prioritize
YAC as it is a long-term commitment that I am extremely
passionate about.
As an active and intrepid community member, I would be able
to effectively involve other teens in the local activities in Dublin
put on by the city and the Youth Advisory Committee.
Considering the reach available to me through social media, I
would raise awareness about these events and encourage
participation on my various social media platforms. In fact, I
have created numerous Snapchat filters showcasing Dublin’s
proud heritage. In addition, I can encourage the students and
teens at my school to attend by discussing these events at
school-wide assemblies and by obtaining permission to hang
up posters/fliers about them around the school campus. I will
advertise these events with enthusiasm and ensure that teens
will not only attend these events, but also participate in them
with substantial involvement so that they can engage more with
the community.
Since I am currently a member of Dublin’s Youth Advisory
Committee, I have attended all of the meetings from the
beginning of this year’s term. During every meeting, I attempt
to voice my opinions and thoughts during the sessions and
receive input on my ideas. The last meeting that was the held
was the February YAC meeting on Wednesday, February 26th.
In this meeting, we discussed the various end of the term goals
that we hope to accomplish this year, such as putting on the St.
Patrick’s Day Fair and the Easter Eggstravaganza. In addition,
we talked about the Youth Advisory Committee Annual Report
Presentation and considered the highlights from this year’s
YAC term.
Additionally, I successfully led the presentation to secure the
Youth Mini Grant and obtained funds for my school’s
Environmental Club to conduct our large-scale cleanup efforts
and Earth Day Celebration. This presentation was given to
YAC in December.

2. What skills do you

Dublin High School
Junior
The Dublin Youth Advisory Committee is a powerful platform
that serves to benefit youth throughout this city, in every aspect
possible. As someone who has already spent a year serving as
a Commissioner on this Council, I have witnessed and
contributed to the incredible projects that the YAC has
accomplished, as well as their inspiring outcomes.
For instance, the Dublin Mini Grant proved to be an
extraordinary opportunity for the youth of Dublin to earn funds
for whatever initiative they might have been planning. Knowing
that I played a role in allocating funds to projects being
implemented by my fellow students in Dublin made me feel like
I was fulfilling a purpose. I have always been passionate about
the service of others, and the Youth Advisory Committee
offered me the opportunity to continue my service on a citywide
scale, something which I have felt honored to do.
My greatest asset to YAC is the fact that I already have prior
experience on this commission, and in the one year that I have
served, I believe that I have proven myself to be someone
enthusiastic and passionate to serve the City of Dublin. I am
the only Committee member on the Dublin Benefit Concert
Subcommittee, showing my level of commitment and
dedication to YAC as a whole.
Furthermore, I am a member of the Alameda County of
Education Youth Advisory Board, where we organized a
conference at UC Berkeley to educate thousands of attendees
on Tobacco Use Prevention and Education. Working to
establish such an event taught me many crucial skills, s uch as
the importance of teamwork, effective communication,
problem-solving, leadership and many more. Without using
these skills and more, our YAB would have never been able to
pull off this incredibly successful conference.
I was also the President of the Dublin Climate is Real
organization, and was the head organizer of the Dublin Climate
Strike last September, where my team and I lead over 70+

students and adults from the Dublin High campus to the City
Council. With a panel of 6 speakers, including Councilmember
Jean Josey, we stressed the importance of climate action and
how we need to act before it becomes far too late. In order for
this strike to be achieved, it was essential that I learned how to
network with organizations and other individuals who could
help me plan such an event. I reached out to the Sunrise
Movement Hubs in the Bay Area (ie: San Ramon and
Fremont), who were planning similar strikes in their region, as
well as the Dublin Police Department, Parks and Recreation
Services, and City Council. We asked local businesses and
community members to donate supplies and funds for the
strike, and arranged for all the equipment needed in a very
short period of time. Coordinating such an event required not
only relentless dedication and taking initiative, but also
excellent networking, communication, and problem-solving
skills, because this was certainly not a smooth journey.
As a member of YAC, I plan to use all of these skills that I have
acquired and strengthened over the past year---to help Dublin
and its youth at every opportunity possible.
Many Dublin youth are constantly under mental strain and
pressure, whether that be from absurdly high expectations to
do well in school while joining multiple extracurriculars and
playing a sport-- all to get into college; or even simply from
familial circumstances that are not in their control. While Dublin
High School has made great strides in caring for their students’
mental health by opening a Wellness Center this past year,
many students are afraid to go and use the facilities available
due to the fact that they cannot conceal their identities.
Anonymity would be a powerful tool and would help urge
students to reach out for help if they need it. As a part of YAC
next year, I would propose to start a mental health initiative,
where the YAC creates an online platform, through social
media or a website, allowing students or troubled youth to open
up about their personal issues or mental health problems
anonymously and be able to get advice in return. YAC can
work to link this platform to the qualified counselors who are a
part of the Dublin High Wellness Center, allowing safe and
effective communication for all.
Another issue that Dublin teens have been facing is the usage
of vapes and other electronic tobacco products, which has
grown so widespread that it is essentially an epidemic. While I
am proud to say that the Dublin City Council has passed an
ordinance banning the sales of tobacco flavored products--one
which Peer Educators, including myself, spoke about in front of
the City Council--it still does not deter from the fact that
adolescents still wish to use such products, and would not

hesitate if they have manage to gain access. While the
ordinance has made it more difficult for teens to reach these
products, they can still drive and buy these products from cities
such as San Ramon, who have banned the use of such
products, but not their sale. The only way to prevent students
from wanting to buy and use these products is to thoroughly
educate them on the effects of it (not the very vague unit
included in the 9th grade health curriculum). The YAC can
organize presentations for students at Dublin High School and
the surrounding middle schools, whether through a virtual
setting or in person. Such an initiative would greatly help Dublin
and its students get rid of the vaping epidemic once and for all.
As previously mentioned, I am a member of the Alameda
Country Office of Education Youth Advisory Committee, and
will continue to be so for the upcoming year. I am also the
President of the organization Climate Change is Real, as well
as an ambassador for the environmental justice movement
“This is Zero Hour”. I am also the Vice Chair for the Tri-Valley
Sikh Center Youth Board, which is a community organization
dedicated to the cultural education of youth, as well as
volunteerism and service. I have applied to be a writer for the
Defiant Magazine next year, an international movement that
related to social justice and youth activism. Furthermore, I will
continue to be a part of Competitive Speech and Debate, as a
participant in both Lincoln-Douglas and Congressional style
debate, and an avid member of Model United Nations.
Despite all the activities that I am a part of, I have made time
for the Youth Advisory Committee this past year, attending
nearly every meeting and even most events that we plan
outside of meetings. I am highly passionate and very
committed to YAC, and will continue to be so if I am reselected
as a Commissioner on the committee.
A very efficient strategy that I implemented as I served this
year on the Youth Advisory Committee was the use of digital
platforms to spread the events that we had organized, as well
as hanging up physical fliers around the Dublin High campus.
As a part of the Dublin Benefit Concert Subcommittee, I posted
regarding the event on my personal social media multiple
times, and talked to many teachers, asking them to mention it
to their students. I even reached out to teams at Dublin High
such as Avani, and Haydn GoSeek, asking them to apply for
the Benefit Concert.
Other methods used could be to create a segment for the video
bulletin at Dublin High by contacting Mr. D’Ambrosio, as well as
placing any event on the announcements by filling out the
announcement form for Mr. Frazier in the office.

Through simple networking and communication, we could
easily spread the message to students in Dublin regarding any
event or fundraiser we may have planned, and incentivize them
to attend and become involved in such activities.
As a member of the Youth Advisory Committee I have attended
all recent meetings, the most recent one on February 26th,
2020, regarding the recruitment for the 2020-2021 YAC term,
as well as the annual YAC presentation in front of the City

What school will you attend

What grade will you be in 7
during the 2020-2021
school year?
1. Why do you want to
become a member of the
City of Dublin Youth
Advisory Committee (YAC)?
Dublin is the city I have lived in for the majority of my life.
Dublin has done so much for many people in this city, including
me. The city built parks, houses, stores, even a water park. We
have been using these facilities, but can sometimes forget to
give back to the community to pay it back. I have participated in
many community events such as the: Picnic Flix, Splatter,
Spring Eggstravaganza, Shamrock 5k Run, Tree lighting
Ceremony, Breakfast with Santa, and Dublin Farmers’ Market.
My family is really big on volunteering and that’s what inspired
me to get started and developed my passion for it. Because of
them, I think: ‘I will try contributing to the city every year’. I
started volunteering at the Dublin Library and during Dublin
Pride Week. I want our city to thrive like it always has, and it
needs people who are devoted to it like me to make the right
choices that impact the community. YAC is the perfect
committee because it lets the youth take leadership and make
choices that benefit the youth of the society. I love our city and
just want to make it better. Along with my personal
experiences, my sister, Mihika Sharma, was on the committee
last year, and told me about the decisions she got to make
through this position. She told me about meetings where she
got to decide which organizations in the city get the grant
money, and how the committee voted on and talked about
huge decisions like this. I want to have a more active role as a
citizen of Dublin, and would love to be part of decisions like this
one. I also enjoy volunteering and want to inspire more student
participation by volunteering at the city youth events. My sister
told me about a volunteering event that she enjoyed, at the
Tree Lighting Ceremony, and I think it would be fun to do with
some of my friends. I have been a leader in other aspects of
my life, such as in cricket and as part of my school. Now, I
would like to improve and impact my community in the best
way possible. YAC is the perfect way for me to do so.

be involved in during the
I am a very well-rounded person because I’m a quick learner,
social, and a fair team player. I am currently doing a computer
class on Python. One day, I want to set up the website and
online tools for Dublin’s YAC chapter. I’m a very energetic
person and I love playing sports and showing my talent on the
playing field. Inspired by Greta Thunburg, I created the Zero
Plastic Club along with a friend and am currently serving as the
Vice President. We applied for YAC Grant to get some funding
for our club last fall. At Fallon Middle School our goal was to
make people aware that we can make the world last longer. I’m
great at fundraising and organizing events as I led a fundraiser
for Outdoor Education at Dougherty Elementary last year. We
raised over one thousand dollars. I’m a leader because I have
been the student council representative for my class since
second grade and I like being a part of decisions that have an
impact on the community. I feel like I am one of the best
candidates for this committee who has the potential to
contribute and learn at the same time.
- Bullying. A word that’s thrown out a lot. Based on
StopBullying.gov, “bullying” really means to intentionally hurt
someone physically, verbally, or on the internet repetitively.
YAC can invite the youth of our city to talk about bullying(what
it is, prevention, how to stop yourself from bullying, etc) through
events that are fun and educational at the same time.
- Another very common teenage issue is stress. People are
often afraid to talk about what they feel on the inside, so YAC
can hold some social circles for the youngsters to talk about
their feelings and make them comfortable.
- Many kids are missing out on opportunities to be social
because they have too many commitments. YAC can invite
kids in this situation to meet with each other and talk about
their problems, because the people with the same lifestyle
understand each other more. YAC is the perfect opportunity to
make other kids feel included and create opportunities for all
kinds of people in the community.
- Many kids have a low self - esteem. YAC can have monthly
gatherings, so people feeling down can express themselves.
They can all practice making positive affirmations about
themselves, and can talk about their issues. I think that it is
important to make our community stronger, and this is a way
we can do that by making everyone feel included in it.
I’m currently doing a sport called cricket and it’s one of my
favorite things to do. I also participate in tae kwon do, but I

know that YAC meetings are on Wednesday nights, which is
why I will make sure that none of my practices for both
activities are on those nights. Other than this, I have no after-
school activities that will take up my time. I will devote myself to
the YAC meetings and activities because I develop a passion
for everything I start doing, and I already have an interest in
community service.
- We can get teens involved in community events by
advertising more (ie.email, flyers, creating a website, etc.).
These advertisements can have a catchy visual, slogan, and
fun activities. Usually kids (like me) like awards and we could
have something small for everyone who comes. I think people
will want to come if their friends are coming too, so if we get
people to start coming to these events, then they can gain a lot
of participation quickly.
- We can also have events for problems or ideas relevant to an
average teen’s life. We can advertise these events at popular
places that teens go to, and have restaurant fundraisers or
bondings at these places. It’s important to create events that
teens want to go to, which is why we should start by asking
them what they are interested in.
- We should also make the YAC a more prominent organization
in the youth’s eyes. We should become more visible in the
public eye, like by having booths at events like Dublin Pride,
the Farmer’s Market, and more. It’s important that we talk to
the youth and get them more involved this way, and make them
realize what a great organization the YAC is.
Yes, I attended the Dublin City Council meeting in June 2019 to
watch my sister receive the Grand Prize Essay Winner award
for Dublin Pride. I also got to see a presentation of all of the
great work done by our community as part of Pride week. I've
also attended various Dublin School Board meetings about
topics like increasing pay for the DTA and building a second
high school.

I want to be a part of the City of Dublin Youth Advisory
Committee to be able to make a change in our community.
Especially because our society is changing and a lot of
changes for the youth come with that. We are especially going
through a difficult time right now and I feel like this is an
important time for our youth to step up and spread awareness.
At this time the youth is also confused and I believe that I can
help lead the way. I want to be a part of helping promote good
change and empower the youth of our community. I also want
to be able to be a role model for younger youth and be a
representative of the older youth. I believe that earning a
leadership role in our community would be a huge honor and I
could do the role justice.
I possess many skills that could make me a strong candidate
for the YAC and that will ultimately help our community. My
skills consist of patience, confidence, influence, organize,
speak clearly, convey, teach, support, explain, and many more.
My social skills are very developed and very useful. I am an
instructor at my martial arts dojo and have experience teaching
and working with kids of all age levels. This really helps
develop my skills in many areas. For example, I have a lot of
patience from dealing with younger children who at times can
have difficulty understanding instructions. I can speak clearly
and get my point across in a clear, but polite way, which I
believe is an important communication skill to have. I am very
organized and punctual as well, so I will be on time for every
meeting and know what is happening. I am also very reliable
and can be counted on whenever help is needed. I also believe
in influence over authority, meaning, I can lead people in a way
that is not aggressive and lead them in the right direction where
they feel comfortable. I believe that these skills can help the
committee.

issues teens in Dublin are
currently dealing with, and
how do you think YAC could

4. What activities are you
currently involved in or will
be involved in during the
2020-2021 schoolyear, and
will you be able to devote
time each month for YAC
meetings and activities?
I believe that one of the main issues that teens in Dublin are
currently dealing with is stress from schools. They have to deal
with stress from school, such as getting good grades, stress
from extracurricular activities, such as sports or clubs, and
even stress from home, which brings me to the next issue,
pressure from parents. Parents can pressure kids to do what
they want, and maybe push them into things that they don't
want to do. This constant oversight from parents can burn kids
out and make them feel confused. I believe one way to help
teens is to hold meetings where they can take a break from all
of their stress by hanging out with others who have some of the
same issues as them and can relate to them. We can also
teach kids how to balance activities and how they can talk to
their parents about how they feel because I know a lot of
students don't know how to or are too scared. Another issue
that teens face is toxicity. Sometimes they get stuck in a toxic
environment that constantly makes them feel like they are not
enough and I believe the main reason is because of advanced
classes. Now, don't get me wrong, advanced classes are a
great way for advanced students to strive to achieve their goals
and enrich themselves with new learning that excites them.
This is what advanced classes were meant to be, but now they
are evolving into a toxic environment. Everything is a constant
competition and students are made fun of for not being in
regular classes, even though they are right where they are
supposed to be. This toxicity can damage their self-esteem and
can lead to mental health issues and I have seen this
personally with some of my closest friends. I believe that
advanced classes shouldn't be used as leverage to make fun of
non-advanced students. A solution to this is to explain to both
students and parents that it is okay to be in regular classes
because they are where they are supposed to be and there is
nothing wrong with that. If I was to be accepted into the Youth
Advisory Committee I could suggest many solutions to many
more issues and be a great helping hand.
Currently, I am involved in many activities, my main ones being
martial arts, dance, and school clubs. In school I am involved
with several clubs, the main ones being Peer Educators and
Interact. In Peer Educators, we are focused on raising
awareness about drugs and substance abuse for the youth. I
already get to interact with our community's youth a lot through
this club. Interact is a service club where I get an opportunity to
give back to the community which I love to do. I am also
involved in dance, I've been dancing since I was young and it is
a stress reliever for me. And my main activity is martial arts. I
am a teacher at my martial arts dojo and get to work with kids. I
love doing it because I get to be a leader and a role model for
4
tons of kids. I will definitely be able to devote time to this
committee every month because my schedule is very flexible. I
also am very committed to serving the community and to
whatever I do, which is why I will most definitely be able to
devote time for this. I was also previously on the YAC and am
familiar with the commitment.
5. How would you get other
teens involved in the
community, teen events,
and City-sponsored
activities?
6. Have you recently
attended a YAC or other
Dublin Commission or City
Council meeting? If yes,
what wasthemeetingdate

of the item(s) you were
interested in?
I would get other teens involved in the community, teen events,
and City-sponsored activities in many ways. One main way is
through social media, I am very involved in social media and
could spread awareness for events through my social media. I
can also talk to many service clubs throughout school and have
them encourage their club members to join. If community
service hours were offered I believe we would have a huge
turnout of the youth. I am also willing to go and talk to people
and have them spread the message that way.
I have not recently attended a YAC or other Dublin
Commission or City Council meeting. However, I was a part of
the YAC previously and am familiar with how the meetings are
run and what topics are discussed. I do not remember the date
of the last meeting exactly, as it was a while ago, but I do know
that I was very interested and loved being a part of the YAC
previously.

do you think YAC could

I want to become a member of the city of Dublin Youth Advisory
Committee because I want to give back to our Dublin. Dublin and
its people have offered me a lot of opportunities. I was a student
who moved to Dublin a day after my eighth-grade graduation,
and the move itself was very stressful for my family and me.
Considering this and the fact I was about to become a freshman
in high school, without knowing anybody, I became very
stressed, nervous, and lonely. However, on my first day of high
school, I was able to meet new people and become friends. I was
very grateful for the welcoming and accepting nature of my
teachers, and the other students. But it was not only our school
faculty but also Dublin's people. This city not only accepted my
family and me but also our traditions and customs and no one
ever judged us for our traditions. Thus I want to give back to this
city, preserving and continuing its customs and traditions. I also
want to help incorporate other customs and traditions into our city
so that our city could be more diverse and welcome everybody.
Each project has small steps to finish it and it needs a project
manager/ leader who can analyze their team's strengths and
weaknesses, and then plan a project in small, manageable tasks,
suitable to the team's strengths. I am just the person; I analyze,
discuss, and understand my team's strengths and weaknesses
and then divide the project in a way which fits excellently for my
team's strength, but still give them some difficult tasks so that my
teammates and myself can advance and improve our skills. I am
also willing to challenge myself to not only improve myself but
help others improve. I am certified in a three-dimensional
modeling software called Autodesk Inventor, so I can design and
simulate three-dimensional objects for any of our projects
requiring physical building so that the entire team would have an
idea of how the project design will look before actually buliding or
design pitching. I can also work with other applications such as
iMovie, Google Slides, and Microsoft Powerpoint. Other than just
technical literacy, I am also a skilled presenter, my presentational
style is interactive with the audience and keeps the audience
interested. I am also quick on my feet, for example, in one of my
major school projects, one of the audience members asked a
question my team was not expecting, but I was effortlessly able
to think of a true and convincing answer.
I believe that Dublin teens are stressed in aspects of their social
life, health, and academic career. Though as repetitive as this
may sound, it is a truly important issue because too much stress
can lead to heart problems and other health-related problems.
There is a saying, "nature understands"; I believe the best way
YAC could address teen stress is to have our teens be more
involved with nature, with activities such as planting, gardening.
YAC could also have some planter boxes or a garden, and on
certain days every month, YAC can have "tend/ garden to the
garden" day, so that teens who like gardening can come and do

some light gardening. YAC can also have other activities such as
teen hiking, where teens, and their families, can hike together in
our regional parks. With the planting activities, the city will also
look more beautiful and welcoming.
I am currently involved in flute, VEX Robotics, French Club. I
volunteer at the Chabot Space and Science Center and also take
three other advancement courses outside of school to improve
myself and reach the best person I can become. I am also
working on designing a garden at Dublin High School. During
2020-2021, school year I will be taking extremely hard and
advanced classes. However, I can still devote time each month
for YAC meetings, but YAC activities will be harder to attend, but
I will try my best.
We live in an ever-evolving era of technology and social media.
Social media is very accessible and quite popular among our
teens, and it is very cheap, efficient, and versatile. Thus this will
be the primary way of advertising. However, I can also
communicate with our city's' teens with posters and directly
talking to others I know and have them continue the news for me
so that it can reach out to others. There are other easy methods,
time-efficient, and cheap methods such as talking to the Dublin
High School's very own newspaper, the Dublin Shield or our
city's news, Patch. Other ways are having pop-up
announcements on the Dublin city's website would be an easy,
cheap method, considering that there is already a website, and it
will take very minimal effort to announce events. There are also
other ways such as the Dublin High School's Bell Schedule app,
where we can ask the creators and managers to announce the
event.
No, I have not attended any YAC meetings, other Dublin
Commission or City Council meeting. However, I would like to
give back to this city which has offered me so many opportunities
to de-stress, enjoy my time with my friends, but mainly to study

I am interested in serving on the Parks and Community Services Commission because of my commitment to helping the
community of Dublin as well as my love for the parks of Dublin and Dublin recreational programs/ facilities. The Parks and
Community Services system is very near and dear to my heart as it is rooted in my childhood and adolescence. Especially
throughout my high school experiences, the importance of mental health, resilience, and a balanced lifestyle has been very
important for me. Initially, I struggled to achieve these qualities as well, but the time I spent in Parks and Community Services
programs and facilities was vital in enabling me to develop a balanced lifestyle and the resiliency and mental health that
accompanies it. After achieving this, my priority has been to help promote a balanced lifestyle to other members of the
community, such as by promoting events of the Dublin Youth Advisory Committee to my peers for the last 2 years. Essentially,
I feel grateful for and indebted to the Parks and Community Services Commission for my personal development and mission,
and I would be honored to give back and further my commitment by serving on the Parks and Community Services
Commission. Additionally, by serving on the Parks and Community Services Commission, I firmly believe that I can provide
insight that can contribute to the well-being and happiness of the citizens of Dublin.
My most important contribution that I can make to the Commission is my perspective and insight which has been imbued with
my leadership experience. Having served in leadership roles in various activities, such as Boy Scouts and the Dublin High
School Blood Drive club, I have developed a capacity to perceive the potential results of my advice and decisions from the
perspectives of those who would be affected by them. As a result, I have the capability to provide insight which effectively
takes into consideration my experience, as well as the views of those who I represent. When this ability is combined with my
interest, experience, and familiarity with the affairs of the Dublin Youth Advisory Committee, I can serve as a thorough liaison
between the Parks and Services Commission and the Youth Advisory Committee that provides understanding, comprehensive
reports as well as a source of useful perspective and insight.

I have much knowledge and experience regarding the parks and recreational facilities in Dublin. I love that the theme of the
whole parks and recreational is "The New American Backyard". This concept really resonates with me because throughout my
childhood and adolescence, my social and physical activities have been conducted at the parks and recreational facilities in
Dublin. For example, I have always enjoyed time with my friends at the parks of Dublin, such as playing basketball with friends
at Alamo Creek Park, biking with my younger brother at Schaefer Ranch Park, and even playing Pokemon Go at the Dublin
Heritage Park. As an avid swimmer, a member of the Dublin High School Swim Team for 3 years, and a swimmer on the
Junior Green Gators/ Green Gators swim team for 5 years, I spend much time at the Wave and the former public swimming
pool that was right next to Dublin High School. Due to my heavy involvement in the aquatics programs of Dublin, I have much
knowledge of both the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, as well as the other facilities of the Wave. I truly admire how the
Wave is a facility enjoyed by a diverse group of people, and how Dublin citizens of all ages enjoy some aspect of the facilit y,
whether it be the water slides, or the lap swim lanes. Additionally, as a student, I spend a lot of time at the Dublin Library. I
really appreciate the abundance of resources available to anyone with a library card, such as the ability to check out a laptop,
and the ability to borrow Advanced Placement review materials. Furthermore, as a member of the Youth Advisory Committee
for two terms, and being Vice Chairperson on my second term, I visit the Dublin Senior Center frequently, and admire how
such a variety of activities are available, from ping pong, to mah jong, to cultural dancing. Ultimately, my active involvement in
the community of Dublin has provided me with much knowledge and experience with the parks and recreational facilities of
Dublin that would be useful for this position.

Currently, I am Vice chairperson of the Youth Advisory Committee, the Senior Patrol Leader of Boy Scout Troop 1947, and
President of the Dublin High School Blood Drive club. I am also involved in the Dublin High School Givelight Club and the
Dublin High School Swim Team. With regards to the 2020-2021 school year, I plan to continue my involvement in these
specific activities. I will definitely be able to attend the monthly Youth Advisory Committee meetings and Parks and Community
Services Commission meetings, as with these extracurricular activities this year, I have been able to and will continue to be
able to attend every YAC meeting and volunteer at every YAC event. In the 2020-2021 school year my only extracurricular
obligation on Mondays is in the spring from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM when I swim, so I can easily attend the monthly meetings of
the Parks and Community Services Commission. Furthermore, if there were to be any conflicts in my schedule, I will make
sure that I do not sacrifice my responsibilities as Student Representative of the Parks and Community Services Commission.
I have served on the Dublin Youth Advisory Committee for the 2018-2019 term, and currently serve as the Vice Chairperson of
the Youth Advisory Committee for the 2019-2020 term. I immensely enjoy my experiences in YAC, and have been a very
committed part of the committee ever since my first term. I loved volunteering at the Tree Lighting Ceremonies, helping out at
the Tri Valley Career Fairs, meeting with members of the Tri-Valley Youth Advisory Committees, volunteering at the 2019
Benefit Concert, discussing decisions for our annual Mini Grant Program, and contributing to other activities. An amazing
result of these activities was that these activities also served as great ways to bond with other members of YAC, in addition to
contributing to the happy experiences of other Dublin citizens. Additionally, I have participated in other programs offered by the
Parks and Community Services Program for many years. Ever since I was a child, I participated in swimming technique
classes offerred by the City of Dublin, which ultimately led to my active participation in other programs, such as my 5 year
involvement in the Dublin Junior Green Gators/ Green Gators swim team. I especially enjoyed my time in the Green Gators
swim team because it felt incredible to contribute towards a team that was not only constantly improving, but also constantly
winning; in the 2019 season, the Green Gators had won their fifth consecutive Tri-Valley swim league. Participation in such
activities offered by the Parks and Community Services Department has given me many great memories that I am grateful for,
such as when Mayor Haubert gave us swimmers vouchers to the Wave, which enabled my teammates and I to get additional
swim practice and make further improvements to our skills. Recently, also I signed up for a Lifeguarding and Oxygen
Administration class offered by the Parks and Community Services Department.

As Vice Chairperson of the Dublin Youth Advisory Commttee of the 2019-2020 term, I have attended every 2019-2020 YAC
meeting. The most recent YAC meeting that I attended was the YAC meeting on February 26, 2020. I was interested in items
7.1 - Recruitment Process for the 2020-21 Youth Advisory Committee, and item 7.2 -Youth Advisory Committee Annual Report
Presentation. The outcome of item 7.1 was that the YAC members learned of the requirements and deadlines for the
applications for both the 2020-2021 YAC term and the 2020-2021 Student Representative to the Parks and Community
Services term. The outcome of item 7.2 was that we discussed the events and accomplishments of the 2019-2020 YAC, such
as the mini grant program, and how pictures of YAC and their events should be obtained to add to the presentation that the the
YAC Chairperson and I, are to deliver to the City Council and Parks and Community Services Commission. Mr. Siu also noted
that he would check in with beneficiaries of the Mini Grant program as well to update our knowledge of the progress of the Mini
Grant program.

1. Why are you interested in serving on the Parks and Community Services Commission?*
I’ve lived in Dublin for over seven years, and in that time, I’ve engrossed myself into everything Dublin has to offer. Whether it
be the nationally recognized public schools, the rigorous DPIE program, the luscious parks, or vibrant festivals, being a citizen
of Dublin has given me numerous opportunities to volunteer, meet new people, and de-stress, all while enjoying being a teen
in Dublin. The city of Dublin represents a melting pot of culture and diversity, and its uniqueness has exposed me to a variety
of ideas and opinions that have made me into who I am today.
Reflecting upon how greatly Dublin has supported and aided me in my endeavors, I want to give back to Dublin and help the
city, as well as its residents, in any way I can. Late last year, after noticing how many of my peers felt as though they lacked an
effective platform to voice their ideas, I founded TEDxDublinHighSchool, Dublin’s first-ever TEDxYouth event that was both
planned and executed by the youth of Dublin. I quickly ran into many issues when trying to book a venue and hire
videographers, but the Youth Mini-Grant helped me in more ways than I could have imagined. The funding I received helped
me secure Dublin’s renowned Performing Arts Center as the venue, and I was also able to allocate some of the funds for
marketing materials, such as flyers and posters, which garnered the attention of many students, teachers, and school
administration.
I’ve also been part of the Youth Advisory Committee for two years -- first as a committee member, and then as the
chairperson. Being the chairperson didn’t just mean that I led the meetings -- it gave me the opportunity to connect with each
and every single member of the committee and recognize all of our strengths so we could work on meaningful, impact-oriented
projects. From planning and volunteering for every child’s beloved Tree Lighting Ceremony to expressing our views and ideas
at the annual Tri-Valley Roundtable to helping youth find jobs at the Teen Job and Career Fair, being the chairperson equipped
me to reach out to many teens in Dublin and help them in any way I could.
I would love to represent the youth perspective by serving on the Parks and Community Services Commission because I’ve
utilized many of Dublin’s parks to practice playing lacrosse with my teammates, meeting up with my peers to work on a group
project, exercise, or simply spend time with my friends, and I want to do what I can to improve the parks and make them more
accessible and attractive to a wide range of audiences. I am grateful for the numerous first-class recreational facilities we have
in Dublin which I have thoroughly enjoyed - like spending countless hours at the Wave honing in on my swimming, taking
various summer classes (the Italian cooking class was my favorite!) at the Shannon Community Center, and my all-time
favorite - taking pictures with my friends at Heritage Park and exploring the Kolb House. Being part of this committee would
give me the opportunity to contribute in many ways that enable all residents to take full advantage of our recreational facilities,
build lifelong memories and contribute to a stronger, unified community. To make that happen, I am eager to do my part and
empower more youth to do their part.

2. What is the most important contribution you can make to the Commission?*
Over the course of my schooling and extra-curricular activities, I’ve cultivated specific skills that make me a strong candidate
for the position of a Student Representative on the Parks and Community Services Commission. My leadership experience
allows me to effectively work with others and voice my opinions, as well as help the rest of my team express their ideas such
that we can work as a collaborative whole. My experience with working with officials from the City of Dublin, influencing and
problem-solving skills, as well as my perseverance, are my most important and impactful contributions to the Commission.
As mentioned above, I founded TEDxDublinHighSchool after sensing the lack of opportunities for youth to speak about their
ideas and opinions, and my influencing skills came in handy when I was discussing the idea with Dublin High administration.
Since rental fees for the Performing Arts Center caused our budget to skyrocket, I reached out to Principal Byrne and Vice -
Principal Farris seeking funding for the rental fees. I had many meetings with them, convincing them of the need for a
TEDxYouth event in Dublin and how it would benefit the entire community, and in the end, they agreed to take up the charges
of the PAC and support the event! Throughout the process, I cultivated specific influencing skills that would help me persuade
others, especially adults.
I’ve also utilized my problem-solving skills to solve the problems I notice around me. Last year, I participated in and won first
place at my school’s Entrepreneurship Competition, where I was instructed to identify a problem and employ technology to
solve it. After noticing how many of Dublin’s supermarkets and grocery stores had the tendency to throw away food that was
consumable but past the sell-by date, and food banks were constantly in need of food, I coded an app that would connect
grocery stores and food banks through an online database where grocery stores could post when they had excess food, and
food banks could sign up to pick up the food. I showed this app to multiple grocery stores, such as Safeway, Target, and
Lucky’s, as well as food banks like Tri-Valley Food Bank and received positive reviews from all of them. Although the
competition ended, I’m continuing to code the app so I can publish it on the App Store and make it available for many users.
I also consider myself a trailblazer because I’m not afraid to venture out into the open and try out new things. I’ve been an
intern at Technovation, a non-profit aimed at decreasing the gender gap by teaching girls about coding and entrepreneurship,
for the past three years with the primary goal of boosting international enrollment and empowering girls from underserved
communities to participate. After spending a lot of time working with Technovation and their students, I wanted to collaborate
with another non-profit so we could expand our reach and spread our message to even more students. After meeting with
MESA, I single-handedly forged a partnership between MESA and Technovation and hosted the first hybrid workshop. Both
organizations were extremely pleased with the outcome and invited me to plan even more workshops.
These skills and experiences would serve me well as a representative on the Parks and Community Services Commission
because as a youth, I would bring in the youth perspective in relation to Dublin’s parks and recreational facilities as well as use
my skills to ensure that Dublin is a desirable place to live for people of all ages. These experiences will guide me in
brainstorming new and innovative solutions to the problems Dublin is currently facing and will allow me to bridge the gap
between various committees and commissions such that we can all work together under one common purpose.

3. What knowledge do you have of the parks and recreational facilities in Dublin?*
Parks and recreational services play a major role in the development of a successful city. They hold a meaningful place in
every resident’s heart -- for children, these services provide a place to bring out their excitement and energy through the
playgrounds and play structures, and for others, these services allow people to address cultural needs thr ough theatres,
stages, and museums, and for some, parks nurture the natural environment and provide public places for people to interact.
Our parks and recreational services embody us as a city because they foster unity and a sense of belonging, where people of
all ages can communicate, athletes can train, artists can perform and showcase, and residents can exercise.
Dublin boasts exactly twenty parks, most of which showcase art from local artists. We also feature many bike trails, such as
the popular Iron Horse Trail, and bike lanes throughout almost all of Dublin to promote exercise. Recently, Dublin introduced
the Parks Passport Challenge, which encourages park-goers of all ages to travel around Dublin and locate Glen the Guide, an
icon who travels around Dublin to play, meet new people, and enjoy nature.
Dublin fosters a sense of community by offering many recreational facilities for special events to allow people to come together
and create new connections. Some of my favorite events include Ghosts of Dublin, the weekly Farmers Markets, Splatter, and
the Summer Concerts! Some other events include the St. Patrick’s Day Festivities, everyone’s favorite, the Spring
Eggstravaganza, and the Benefit Concert.
There are numerous recreational activities available for youth, adults, and seniors alike. The Wave features opportunities to
exercise, spend time with friends, and feel a rush of adrenaline while speeding down the waterslides. Something that makes
Dublin unique from other cities is its emphasis on public art programs -- it’s something that brings me a little spark of joy every
time I drive to school or the grocery store. A quick drive around Dublin is more than enough to draw attention to the brightl y-
painted utility boxes (the popcorn one is my favorite!), and Dublin recently launched another public art project consistin g of
patio art chairs. One of my close friends is actually painting one of the chairs and I’m super excited to see these placed around
Dublin soon.
Overall, the purpose of the Parks and Services Commission is to encourage healthy lifestyles, preserve Dublin’s heritage,
provide opportunities for recreational experiences, and strengthen the community’s overall image.

4. What knowledge do you have of the programs offered through the Parks and Community Services
Department? Have you ever participated in a program (such as J.A.W.S., Dublin L.E.A.D., J.L.P., Youth Advisory
Committee - YAC) or class offered by the Parks and Community Services Department? *
(This box can be expanded by expanding the lower right hand corner of this box. This option may not be available for the

I’ve taken multiple classes at Shannon Community Center for a broad range of topics -- from Italian cooking to Bollywood
dancing and journalism, I’ve explored many of the recreational classes Dublin has to offer. And for as long as I can remember,
I spent most of my summer evenings at the pool immersed in a class taught by the City of Dublin -- I can never forget the
excitement I felt when I moved up the levels! Sports classes were also a fundamental part of my childhood, as I took classes in
almost every sport I can think of: soccer, basketball, volleyball, dance, lacrosse, and tennis, to name a few. I was also an
active member of the Dublin LEAD program throughout middle school and had the opportunity to assist with various classes
held at Shannon Community Center over the summer. I was not aware of the Junior Aquatic Water Safety (JAWS) program or
Junior Leader Program (JLP) until last year and consequently didn’t get the chance to participate, but I’m well aware of the
program and what participants learn about, and consistently advocate for these programs when anyone asks me for any
summer program recommendations.
For the past two years, I have been part of the Youth Advisory Committee; first as a committee member, then elected as the
Chairperson. Being in this role has given me the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people and reach ou t to my
community and assist in any way I can. From the Youth Mini-Grant to the Teen Job and Career Fair, as well as various
community events, I’ve interacted with many Dublin locals (I like to call them Dubliners!) and heard their opinions on how we
can plan even more community-building events and support our local businesses.

5. What school and/or extracurricular activities are you currently involved in or will be involved in during the
2020-2021 school year and will you be able to regularly attend the monthly meetings?*
I’m an intern at Technovation, a non-profit endeavor aiming to close the tech gender gap by teaching girls from underserved
communities about coding and entrepreneurship. I’ve been part of the organization for almost three years now, and have
helped out in multiple ways: I was initially the alumni relations coordinator, where I researched various STEM incubators and
accelerators and planned alumni events. I later transitioned into communications and marketing and wrote several blogs about
increasing the number of women in STEM and various skill-building blogs about creating a LinkedIn profile or enhancing a
resume. Most recently, I’ve been working with other nonprofits, such as MESA, to broaden the reach of our program. I planned
many boot camps and workshops for girls from underserved communities and I’m currently creating a blog about coding
fundamentals which will be announced to over 10,000 people at Technovation’s annual World Pitch.
I will also continue to work on directing and organizing TEDxDublinHighSchool. Our event was determined to take place in
early April, but due to concerns looming around the Coronavirus, we have postponed our event to early September. Some of
my duties for this event will include marketing the event to local Dublin schools, reaching out to Dublin City Council and inviting
them to view the event, creating posters to hang up around campus, and helping our speakers craft their speech.
At school, I am also part of various clubs such as DECA, which teaches students about business skills, CSF, which
encourages students to volunteer and help out their community, and Kids Against Hunger, where I package food with other
club members at least once a month.
In my free time, I enjoy dancing Kathak, which is a classical dance form from India. I’ve been dancing for a little over ten years,
and enjoy every moment of it. Dancing Kathak gives me the opportunity to connect with my Indian heritage and understand my
roots, while also expressing myself creatively.
I assure the committee that I will be able to attend every Parks and Community Services Commission meeting, as well as
every Youth Advisory Committee meeting. I will also be able to volunteer at any events when necessary and can assist the
Commission in any way possible.

I attend all of the YAC meetings and regularly attend the City Council meetings with my dad. I haven’t attended many recently
due to concerns about the Coronavirus but the most recent City Council meeting I attended was on March 3rd and I was
particularly interested in hearing about the March on Wheels program since I wrote about this program for an essay in my
history class. There was not necessarily an outcome to the item, but the City Council acknowledged the proclamation. Another
City Council meeting of interest was the February 18th meeting, where the council presented information about housing needs
and allocation. The last YAC meeting I attended was on February 26th and I was interested in hearing about the applications
for the 2020-2021 term for YAC and Student Representative to Parks and Services Commission.
