SUPPORTING MERCURY THERMOMETER EXCHANGE PROGRAM
IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay is a precious natural resource and as a community we want to do our part to
keep it clean and preserve it for future generations; and
'WHEREAS, only a few mercury thermometers can pollute our local rivers and streams and ultimately the San
Francisco Bay; and
WHEREAS, we realize that thermometers are only a small part of the mercury problem, but when it comes to
preventing water pollution, every drop counts; and
WHEREAS, approximately only 60% of the mercury that finds its way into our sewer system is removed from the
wastewater, leaving approximately 40% of the mercury that ultimately drains to the San Francisco Bay; and
WHEREAS, Mercury is harmful to the San Francisco Bay aquatic life and ultimately humans who eat fish from
the Bay.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Dublin endorses the mercury thermometer exchange
program that is being funded and implemented jointly between the Dublin San t~amon Services District, the City
of PIeasanton, and Pteasanton Garbage Service. Items containing mercury include the following: fluorescent light
bulbs, mercuric oxide batteries (small button-size batteries often used in cameras, watches, and calculators],
thermostats, and mercury switches. ~---3~
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that [, Janet Lockhart, Mayor of Dublin, on behalf of the entire City Council
encourage all its citizens to take advantage of this program and bring their old mercury thermometers to the
Dublin San Ramon Services District, at 7051 Dublin Boulevard, and exchange them for new digital thermometers. ;~
