DESCRIPTION: In July, several employees from the Dublin Swim Center participated
in the 2002 Northern California Lifeguard Games. This is the 14th year the event has been conducted by
the Bay Area Public Pool Operators Association. The purpose of the Lifeguard Games is to motivate
Lifeguards to continually practice their rescue skills and improve safety at Northern California aquatic
facilities. The Lifeguard Games includes events that test the Lifeguards' ability to rescue active and
submerged victims, perform CPR, place a spinal injury victim on a backboard, and work as a team.
Thirty-four teams from throughout Northern California attended the competition. The City of Dublin sent
two teams that placed 11th and 22nd in the overall competition. It should also be noted that Dublin
Lifeguards Vincent Garcia and Kerry Pereira finished in first place for the CPR event, which is
commendable considering there were over 170 other competitors at the Lifeguard Games. Following is a
list of employees that participated on the City of Dublin's teams:
Vincent Garcia KelTy Pereira
Alej andra Hernandez Daniel Scheppler
Blake Kuiper Justin Schmidt
Kaitlin Laird Keri Smith
Jessica Leary John Watling
Olek Pawlowski Christopher Young
The City would like to commend these employees for their participation in. the Lifeguard Games and for
volunteering their time to train and compete in the event. Staff would also like to recognize Jim Vance for
providing a $300 sponsorship to pay the entry fees for each team. Jim Vance is the owner of East Bay
Pool Service, which provides pool maintenance services at the Dublin Swim Center.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the City Council formally recognize the employees who participated in the Lifeguard
Games and East Bay Pool Service for sponsoring the teams.
