DESCRIPTION: To coincide with the City of Dublin's 25th Anniversary, the Dublin
Library is proposing the "Dublin Reads" project. The goals of the projects are:
1) To provide an intergenerational, shared literary experience and opportunity for collaboration
between the City, the schools, Dublin Library and local organizations that would enhance and
foster a sense of community among the residents of the City of Dublin.
2) To use this shared experience to promote Dublin's 25th Anniversary as a City.
3) To promote the activities of the sponsoring agencies of the project including the Friends of Dublin
Library, Dublin Historical Preservation Association, Dublin Library and the City of Dublin.
As proposed, adults and high school aged students will read the novel Snow Mountain Passage by James
D. Houston - a novel of the Donner Party. Children will read Patty Reed's Doll. The proposed launch for
the project would be September, 2007 at the Day on the Glen festival. The project would continue
throughout Fall, 2007 and Winter/Spring, 2008 culminating in an author event with James D. Houston
during National Library Week in April, 2008.
A number of activities will be promoted by the Library in order to engage the community in the project as

1) The Library proposes to sponsor 5 Chautauqua Events and a visit with author James D. Houston,
to fully engage readers' in the historical context of the time period. Additional children's
programs that tie in with Patty Reed's Doll are still to be formulated.
2) The Library's two book discussion groups will read and discuss Snow Mountain Passage in Fall of
2007. Members of the book discussion groups will then take the lead in facilitating other drop-in
discussion groups throughout the community and the length of the project.
3) The Library will facilitate purchase of enough copies of the two books to "seed" the community
and provide wide access to the novels. In addition, the Library will circulate two book discussion
kits for each novel, available for checkout and use by book discussions groups in the community.
Seed copies will also be placed at the Dublin Senior Center, the Dublin Heritage Center as well as
at each School Library.
4) Library staff will provide a resource listing to the schools and other interested community
organizations who may want to plan their own programming related to the project.
City support ofthe Dublin Reads project is requested as follows:
1) Use of the City's 25th Anniversary logo in order to brand the event to the City celebration. Logo
would appear on all publicity including a postcard, bookmark, brochure, activity guide listing,
labels on books and program flyers.
2) Publicity through the City's publications; front, back or inside cover of Fall Guide; article in City
newsletter.
3) Potential involvement in City programs-
a) After school enrichment program - participants read Patty Reed's Doll and do an activity
related to it
b) Senior Center - host a drop in book discussion group, offer a trip to Donner Memorial,
distribute publicity
c) Heritage Center - host a drop in book discussion group, offer a workshop on pioneer skills,

City Staff have met with Dublin Library Staff to discuss the proposed activities and believe that they can
