Dublin Pride Pro,iects
There were several individuals and organizations in the City that volunteered significant time and
resources to community clean up and beautification projects. The following "Make a Difference in
Dublin" projects were completed as part of the 2003 Dublin Pride Week events:
E-Waste and Hazardous Waste Collection Event: This event officially kicked off Dublin Pride Week, and
was the first time the City of Dublin has hosted this event. The clean up had over 350 pre-registered
residents, who in turn brought in 38,580 pounds of E-Waste and 31,049 pounds of Hazardous Waste
materials. The breakdown of the collections are as follows:
- Industrial Surplus Foundation was able to reuse 7,000 pounds of the e-waste collection that
will be refurbished and put back in to use by the local community.
- Recycle America, a subdivision of Waste Management, was able to retrieve the TVs -
13,795 pounds
- Low Grade Breakage (computer equipment, phones, stereos, etc.)- 8,116 pounds
- Monitors- 9,669 pounds
- Household Hazardous Waste - 31,049 pounds
Senior Projects: There were twelve volunteers that made up the Senior Projects Team and they were able
to assist eight (8) senior homes with a variety of sweat equity that ranged from cleaning windows to minor
home repair. The Senior Projects Team members were:
- Bob Cantrell from MCE (Co-Senior Project Lead)
- Rose Macias, City of Dublin (Co-Senior Project Lead)
- Sergeant Randy Skarphol, City of Dublin- Police Services
- A1 Chavarria, City of Dublin- Police Services

~ James Walter, Dublin High School
- Heather Walden, Dublin High School

Community Blood Drive: The Community Blood Drive was a new addition to the Dublin Pride Week.
Dublin Lion's Club headed the effort. The Community Blood Drive took place at Dublin High School
with heavy participation by High School students and community.
Canned Food Drive: The Canned Food Drive was another new addition to Dublin Pride Week activities.
The major force in the success of this activity is credited to Robbie Kreitz and Alyson Marvin, Special
Education Instructors at Wells Middle School, and the Dublin Girl Scouts. The canned food drive
supplied close to four van loads of can food that was delivered to Children's Emergency Council.
Creek Clean-Up: There were over 100 volunteers made up of students, residents and Dublin Lions Club
members who worked at several creeks throughout the City of Dublin. Volunteers were given Dublin
Creek Clean-up tee-shirts and were treated to a barbeque provided by the City and Dublin Lion's Club.
Refurbish Picnic Tables at the Heritage Center: The Knights of Columbus volunteered to refurbish picnic
tables at the Heritage Center.
Storm Drain Painting: The Dublin 4-H Club painted over 45 storm drains throughout the City with the
words "No Dumping- Drains to the Bay."
In recognition of their outstanding efforts, these individuals and groups will be presented with Certificates
of Appreciation for their support of the 2003 Dublin Pride Week event.
2003 Dublin Pride Partners
The increased events for 2003 Dublin Pride Week could not have been accomplished without the City's
key partners:
Waste Management
Dublin Chamber of Commerce
- Tri-Valley Herald
- Dublin Unified School District
.- Dublin San Ramon Services District
- Zone 7 Water Agency
- Dublin Lions Club
- Imprint Works
These Dublin Pride Partners will be recognized by City Council with a Certificate of Appreciation and a
framed 2003 Dublin Pride Poster.
Community Rose Garden
The 2003 Dublin Pride Committee came up with the idea of creating a Community Rose Garden at
Emerald Glen Park near the Tennis Courts. There was a donation of $25 per rosebush, which allowed the
rose garden to be a cost covering activity. The goal planting 100 rosebushes by the end o£ Dublin Pride
Week and that goal was exceeded by 20%. There are 120 rosebushes (see attachment 2) in place and
Dublin-based company 3J's Gift Boutique is supplying the rose identification at no charge. Each rosebush
donor will be receiving a Rose Certificate to thank them for their donation.
In closing, Staff recommends that the City Council receive the report and formally recognize poster
contest and tee-shirt design winners, volunteers/organizations, Dublin Pride Partners, and Community
Rose Garden donors.
