Accept the grant from California Kids Plate Program in the amount of $1,600 2. Approve Budget Change 3. Authorize Out of State Travel of Community Safety Assistant Laura Correa-Hernandez to attend the Lifesavers National Conference on Highway Safety Priorities in Nashville, Tennessee. FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Grant funds from the California Kids Plate Program will cover the costs of the conference. DESCRIPTION: Laura Correa-Hernandez, Community Services Assistant with Dublin Police Services, has been awarded a grant to attend the Lifesavers National Conference on Highway Safety Priorities in Nashville, Tennessee on March 28-April 1, 2009. The intent of the Lifesavers National Conference (Attachment 1) is to reduce the tragic toll of deaths and injuries on our nation's roadways by providing a forum that delivers common- sense solutions to today's critical highway safety problems. It offers the latest information on advances in highway safety; highlights successful programs and draws attention to emerging safety issues. Conference participants meet with their highway safety peers in a forum where they can share program successes, learn from each other, and develop alliances with people from all over the country. Attendance at the conference will enable Community Safety Assistant Correa-Hernandez, who is a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Instructor, to gain current information on car seat studies, trends, dangers, practices and laws. The estimated costs for attendance at the Lifesavers National Conference on Highway Safety Priorities will be approximately $1,600 per attendee, which includes registration, meals, hotel, airfare and ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COPY TO: Page 1 of 2 ~ ITEM NO. The Professional Development Grant, in the amount of $1,600, will reimburse the City for the conference's costs. The proposed budget change (Attachment 2) will recognize the unbudgeted expense for the conference attendance and the new revenue from the grant. RECOMMENDATION: It is Staff's recommendation that the City Council: (1) Accept the grant from California Kids Plate Program in the amount of $1,600, (2) approve the Budget Change and (3) authorize Out of State Travel of Community Safety Assistant Laura Correa-Hernandez to attend the Lifesavers National Conference on Highway Safety Priorities in Nashville, Tennessee. While it is impossible to correlate reduced crashes, injuries and fatalities to attendance at a conference, the Lifesavers program is put together by a dedicated group of highway safety experts from both the public and private sectors. We strive to base workshops on evidence-based programs that can be replicated in communities throughout the country. If you haven't attended a Lifesavers conference in a while, we urge you to join us in Nashville. We are confident that you won't go away disappointed. Conference attendees come from the public and private sectors and represent many career fields.
