FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
$1,960 is included in the FY06-07 Budget for the Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION: Construction of the Dougherty Hills Dog Park was completed in late
January 2007 and the park is currently in a 90-day maintenance period. Provided that the turf and
plantings are established at the conclusion of the maintenance period, Staff anticipates that the Dog Park
will open to the public in early May.
As has been done with other new parks in the City, Staff recommends that a park dedication and grand
opening be scheduled. Typically grand openings have been held on Saturdays. Available Saturdays in
May are the 12th, the 19th and the 26th. Of these dates, Staff recommends May 19th as May 1ih is the
day before Mother's Day and May 26th is part of a three-day weekend. It should be noted that the art for
the dog park will not be completed until the end of June 2007. If the Council would prefer to defer the
grand opening until the dog park art is complete and installed, then Staff would recommend that the
opening be held in July 2007.
Although Staff has not yet finalized an event plan, potential components would include ribbon cutting,
refreshments (hot dog barbecue), dog contests and demonstrations and a commemorative gift for dogs.
Staff will discuss potential plans with the Parks and Community Services Commission at the March
meeting of the Commission and bring a report back to the Council in April.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council select a date for the
Dougherty Hills Dog Park Grand Opening.
