Piazza Sorrento was accepted by the City Council in March 2008 and it is anticipated that Devany Square will be open to the public in August. The City Council has directed Staff to conduct a joint park dedication ceremony/grand opening event for both parks on Saturday, October 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Staff has developed a preliminary event plan. The event will begin with a ribbon cutting at Devany Square with a presentation from the City Historian on the history of the Devany family. Staff will invite representatives of the family to attend. This will be followed by a procession to Piazza Sorrento for a ribbon cutting and poem composed by the City Poet Laureate. Following the ribbon cuttings, family games will ensue at both parks along with entertainment and refreshments. A commemorative gift will also be distributed. The activities at Devany Square will include a craft project, labyrinth walk, historical display, and roaming entertainment. Lemonade and fresh warm jumbo pretzels will be served at Devany Square. Based on the Italian theme of the Sorrento development, the activities at Piazza Sorrento will include lawn bowling and other games that highlight Italian culture, a chalk artist, and acoustical Italian music. Refreshments at Piazza Sorrento will include gelato and Italian sodas. Staff is working with Toll Brothers on the event to coordinate tours of the homeowners' community building adjacent to the park. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council receive the report. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COpy TO: Page 1 of 1 ITEM NO. ~.I G:\COUNCIL \Agenda Statements\2008\8-19 Park Dedications.doc
