Sufficient funds are available in the Fiscal Year 2001-2002 Budget DESCRIPTION: Ted Fairfield Park is the City's newest neighborhood park and is located in the Dublin Ranch Development on North Dublin Ranch Road between Antone Way and Oak Bluff Lane. The developer of the Dublin Ranch Phase I project, is building the park. The 5-acre park borders the site of a future elementary school and includes the following amenities: Outdoor Basketball Court (no lights) Sand Volleyball Court 60' Baseball Field with Soccer Field Overlay Walking Paths Picnic Tables Restrooms/Drinking Fountains Separate Children and Tot Play Areas With the exception of the restrooms, play area and adjacent plaza area, which are fenced with a temporary construction fence, the remainder of the park opened to the public in late August. The play area is adjacent to the Recycled Water Pump Station Building being constructed by the Dublin San Ramon Services District on a different schedule. The developer is unable to complete the installation of the play area until the Pump Station Building is complete, tentatively in the fall. Once the play area is complete, the City will accept the improvements and conduct a dedication of the park. The date for the dedication will be determined at that time. At the August 20, 2001 meeting of the Parks and Community Services Commission, the Commission considered a number of ideas for the dedication of Ted Fairfield Park. The Commission recommends that the event begin with a short dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting. As the park is named after Ted Fairfield, the ceremony could include an "unveiling" of the park sign. Although not considered by the Parks and Community Services Commission, Staff would recommend that the Dublin San Ramon Services District be invited to take part in the ceremony as they might wish to have a ribbon cutting for the Recycled Water Pump Station. The food, entertainment and activities would follow the theme. The proposed entertainment is a country western band. A western theme barbecue featuring hot dogs, chili and sodas is recommended. Staff would need to secure a volunteel1 group to assist with the food preparation. To augment the western theme a "Neighborhood · Chili Co6k~Off" would be held as part of the event. Activities would be planned to take advantage of the park amenities. The recommended activities include utilizing the basketball court for a free-throw contest or the City's portable roller hockey rink could be setup to offer free roller hockey lessons. The soccer field would be used to conduct a soccer skills challenge. A simple children's craft with a western theme would 'be conducted under the shade structure. At past park and facility dedications the City has handed out a commemorative item. After reviewing the aVailable options, Staff found two items that would be appropriate for this event including a yo-yo that looks like a basketball and an insulated Nylon Cooler (Samples will be shown at the meeting). The selected commemorative item would be custom printed with information about the park dedication. The Parks and Community Service Commission favor the insulated Nylon Cooler. Staff recommends that the City Council receive the report and provide input on the preferred event components and commemorative item. ·Once the completion date for the park is determined, Staff will identify possible dates for the park dedication for consideration by the City Council. -2-
