This timeframe is in sequence with the new Sorrento housing development that sUIToUl1ds the square. In order to pro~eed with the square design, on April 4, 2006 the City Council authorized an Agreement with Keller Mitchell and Company for landscape architectural services. Situated in the Sorrento development, the architecture and the site amenities of the neighborhood are dominated by Italian design motifs. With that consideration, the City's consultant was directed to develop the square hased on Italian design principles. Another factor in the planning process is lhe mtegrahon of the neighhorhood square northweM gateway (to he huilt hy the developer) mto the square's overall design. As part of the community design process two workshops were held in conjunction with the Parks and Community Services Commission. At the first workshop held on May 15,2006 three design options were presented for puhlie input (Atta~hment 1). Following the meehng Staff posted the three design options COpy TO: Kdh::r Mitchell and Company/Parks & Community ~k:rviqt=s Commissilln Page I of2 ITEM NO. ~. 0_ art' G:\COlJNCILlAgendll Staternenl<;\2006\ 7-1 X Area r - Neighborhood Square.doc along with a simple questIOnnaire at the Sorrento sales office. For the second workshop held on July 10, 2ll06, the Landscape ArchItect ineorporated the results of the first puhlic meeting and the questionnaire into the prcfelTed eonecptual square design (Attachment 2). The proposed conceptual square deSIgn incorporates the elliptIcal shape as originally presented in Option I The elliptIcal shape provIdes a larger centraltnrf space for unstructured play, improves the connection to the park's main entrance, allows for enlcient circulation withll1 the square and docs not disrupt the visual connectlOll betwcen the northwest gateway entrance, adja<;ent private recreation facihty and heyond. Secondly, the design responds to the Parks and Comnmnity ServIces Commission's deSlfe to position thc two play areas In close proxImity to each other The Parks and Community Serviccs Commission reviewed the preferred conceptual square design f\Jr the Dublin Ranch Area F - Neighborhood Square and recommends approva.1 by the City Council. Upon City Council appro~ al of thc preferred conceptual square deSIgn, the Landscape Architect will l1litiate the developmcnt of construction documcnts. It should be noted that (he prelil11mary cost estimates for the Area F Square based on the prefelTed conceptual design exceed the identificd project budget by $49,lJOO During the development of constructIOn documents I'or the project, Staff and the Consultants will continue to refinc the scope of work to identify potential cost savings that can be achieved wIthout eOl11prol11ismg the project deSIgn.
