Procedures for Naming Future Parks

DESCRIPTION: There are two City parks in various stages of development; Area F
Neighborhood Square is under construction and Area G Neighborhood Square has design approval and
preparation of construction documents is underway. Area F Neighborhood Park is also budgeted to begin
this Fiscal Year. Consequently it is necessary to determine names for these future parks.
At this time, there are not set procedures for naming City parks. In the past, the City Council has typically
requested that the Parks and Community Services Commission forward three names for consideration by
the Council and the final determination is made by the Council. In several cases, the Council has
determined a park name not on the list forwarded by the Commission. In the most recent past, names for
Bray Commons were solicited from the developer, through a questionnaire in the sales office and from
suggestions of City Staff. These names were forwarded to the Parks and Community Services
Commission who narrowed the list down to four names for consideration by the Council. In the case of
Emerald Glen Park, the Master Plan Task Force recommended three names to the Parks and Community
Services Commission. One of the recommended names was forwarded to the Council by the Commission
along with two other names decided upon by the Commission.
In most cases, the following general guidelines were considered when determining a park name:
· Name reflects the geographic location of the facility (neighborhood/development, major street or
regional area ofthe City)
· Name reflects a prominent form of topography, or a prominent plant, bush or tree

. Name reflects the history of the facility (family name of the builder, developer, or person who donated
the land)
. Name recognizes a significant contributor to the advancement of the City (former Mayor,
Councilmember, Board/Commission Member, etc.)
Staff is seeking direction from the City Council on the procedure for naming future parks. Would the
Council like to continue the practice of having the Parks and Community Services Commission forward
three names for City Council consideration or is there another procedure the Council would prefer? For
example, the City could solicit names through the website which could be used for the naming of any
future park or the Council could choose to determine park names without the input of the Parks and
Community Services Commission.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council provide direction to Staffon
procedures for naming future parks.
