RECOMMENDATION~ ~ 1) Receive Dublin Pride Week Activities Report ' 2) Accept gifts from Livermore-Dublin Disposal, Tri-Valley Herald, Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Target, and direct staff to prepare formal acknowledgement. FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Sufficient funds are included in the Fiscal Year 2001-2002 Budget. It is estimated that the City will contribute $7,525, Livermore-Dublin Disposal will donate $3,025 for school giveaways, Dublin Chamber of Commerce will donate $1,000 for banners, Target will donate $200 in gift certificates and the Tri-Valley Herald will contribute a variety of advertising and promotional services valued at $8,600. DESCRIPTION: Dublin Pride Week is an annual event, which seeks to promote a positive image for the City of Dublin. The goal is to seek ways in which individuals or groups can act to improve the community. This year's theme is "20 Years of Dublin Pride" to celebrate the City's anniversary and reflect on the ways in which individuals and organizations have contributed to making Dublin a better place to live. This year, Dublin Pride Week is scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 20th, and will conclude on Saturday, April 27tho This will be the second year that Pride Week has been scheduled to coincide with Earth Day. Additionally the Governor has recognized April as Keep California Beautiful month. Livermore-Dublin Disposal's (LDD) first special clean-up for the year will take place between April 1st - 19th. During the clean-up, Dublin households can dispose of up to three cubic yards of refuse at no additional charge. Residents will be encouraged to clean up their own properties as part of the Dublin Pride Week activities. In addition LDD has offered to donate "handy hauler" waste containers to groups or individuals participating in City-approved clean-up projects. H/cc-forms/agdastmt.doc COPIES TO: ITEM NO. A committee comprised of representatives from City Staff, the City Council, Dublin Unified School District, Livermore-Dublin Disposal, and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce has met three times and has developed a plan to implement the following goals: Continue to Expand Community Awareness of Dublin Pride Week: · Promotional posters will be distributed to area businesses by Dublin Police and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce (designed and printed by Tri-Valley Herald). · Press releases will be sent to area newspapers, and PSA's to radio stations. ~' Newspaper ads announcing the event will run in the Tri-Valley Herald (donated). · Announcements will'appear in school newsletters and on reader boards. · Announcements will appear on Channel 30. · 40 Dublin Pride Week Banners will be floTM throughout the City (cost shared with Dublin Chamber of Commerce). · Dublin Pride Week Banner will be flown over San Ramon Road. · Pride Week buttons will be distributed to Dublin businesses and schools 0 Involve City School Children in Dublin Pride Activities: · "Dublin Pride" promotional items will be given to each child that attends school in Dublin. Wildflower seed packets will be distributed to all children to either plant at home or a designated school planting area. Pride Week/recycling arrow stickers will be given to each child. Additionally, "Earth Care" educational coloring and activity books will be given to grades K-5 and water bottles with the Pride Week logo will be given to grades 4-12 (see Attachment 1). · The City will sponsor a Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest for grades K-12. > All participants will receive a certificate of appreciation; ~' Winners at each grade level will receive Target gift certificates > Winning entries of contest will be displayed at Civic Center; )~ Grand Prize and first prize winners will be recognized at a City Council Meeting > Contest winners will be printed in the Tri-Valley Herald (donated). · Schools will be encoUraged to participate in a school beautification project. · School classes and groups are encouraged to participate in a "Make a Difference in Dublin" project. 0 Encourage "Make a Difference in Dublin" Community Improvement Projects: · 'Individuals, classes, groups, and businesses are encouraged to "Make a Difference in Dublin" by donating their time to community-improvement projects. · Letters were sent to community organizations asking for assistance with a list of community projects, including a creek clean-up, beautification projects at City parks and facilities, assisting seniors with projects around the house/yard and painting "Drains to Bay" on City storm drains. · Individuals, families community groups and businesses will be'encoUraged to pUrchase an appropriate heritage tree that will be planted at a designated location in a park or open space of their choice. Cost °fthe trees would vary depending on the size and variety of tree ($120-$340). If desired, a small plaque may be placed in front of the tree. The plaque would read: City of Dublin 20th Anniversary (Oak, Bay, Cypress, Maple, Redwood, Buckeye or Sycamore) Tree ".Dublin Pride Week 2002" "Donated by (name of family, organization or company)" · Participants will be acknowledged at a City Council meeting. We have enjoyed working with the City to plan this event each year and look for another successful celebration. Waste Management is committed to $3,025 toward the Dublin Pride Week Celebration. These monies wilt be used toward the environmental awareness program. We will provide a Handy Hauler container to non-profit organizations that sponsor a specific cleanup project that has been approved by the City. We will schedule the Handy Haulers, along with the containers needed for the City Creek Cleanup project. Our recycling coordinator, Sheila Fagliano, is working with the City on the Dublin Pride Week committee and she will provide each child who participates in the Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest with a "Certificate of Merit" for participating, as well as "Certificates" for the first place winners. This year's giveaways are coloring books for grades K-5, sports water bottles for 6-12, and every student will receive a packet of wildflower seeds and a Dublin Pride Week sticker. Ms. Fagliano, has been working together with Jason Behrmann, Nancy Feeley, Jim Freeland, and Tim Hunt to provide a successful Dublin Pride Week Celebration.
