Wetherford, Economic Development Analyst EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Small Business Saturday – November 24, 2012 – is a national initiative that marks a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. This initiative to prompt residents to dedicate a portion of holiday shopping to local, independently-owned small businesses aligns closely with the Dublin’s Shop Local Facebook Campaign – “Discover Dublin for the Holidays.” FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council proclaim November 24, 2012 as Small Business Saturday. Submitted By Reviewed By Economic Development Director Assistant City Manager DESCRIPTION: Small Business Saturday, which falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is an initiative that began in 2010 to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year. In 2011, Small Business Saturday gave a boost to local business merchants and spurred an estimated 103 million Americans to shop at independently-owned small businesses. Supporting small businesses is a high priority for the City Council and Staff has worked on several fronts to support local businesses, including partnerships with the Dublin Chamber of ITEM NO. 3.1 Page 1 of 2 Commerce for classes and programs, as well as to develop the Dublin Shop Local Holiday Facebook Campaign – “Discover Dublin for the Holidays.” The City and Chamber effort to bolster support for local and small business is in line with the national Small Business Saturday initiative. In fact, the Dublin Shop Local Facebook page will be actively supporting and promoting the event throughout the month of November to local residents. NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: None. Proclamation in Recognition of Small Business Saturday – November 24, 2012 Page 2 of 2 A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF DUBLIN CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, the City of Dublin believes that small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the glue that holds communities together; according to the United States Small Business Administration, there are currently 28 million small businesses in the United States and they represent more than 99 percent of American companies, create two-thirds of the net new jobs, and generate half of private gross domestic product; and WHEREAS, small businesses employ ½ of the employees in the private sector in the United States; and WHEREAS, 93% of US consumers believe it’s important to support the local small businesses that they value in their community and 89% agree that locally-owned, independent businesses contribute positively through taxes and jobs; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin supports our local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy and preserve our neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, advocacy groups and public and private organizations across the country have endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tim Sbranti, Mayor of Dublin, on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim November 24, 2012, as: “SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY” And urge the residents of our community, and communities across the country, to support small businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year.
