Volunteer Day
Approximately 750 community volunteers donated their time and energy to community cleanup
and beautification projects on Volunteer Day, Saturday, April 30, 2016. Volunteers met at 8:00
a.m. at Emerald Glen Park to receive instructions and supplies for various projects throughout
the community. This year, the thank you gifts for volunteers included LED lightbulbs, hand-
powered flashlights and jump ropes. Supervisor Scott Haggerty’s office donated breakfast
burritos, which were in addition to the usual breakfast items - muffins, fruit, coffee and juice. At
the completion of projects, all volunteers were invited to a free barbecue provided by the Dublin
Lion’s Club with salads donated by The Cheesecake Factory.
Volunteer Day consisted of the following projects:
Senior Projects: Approximately 45 volunteers were able to assist 20 seniors on home projects
with a variety of activities that ranged from cleaning windows to minor home repair and yard
work. These projects were coordinated by the Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley, which
helps the City find Dublin seniors who are in need of some assistance.
Schools - Approximately 160 volunteers went to seven Dublin schools to do weeding, planting,
and trimming; cleaning and curb painting projects. These projects were conducted at
Dougherty, John Green, Frederiksen and Murray Elementary schools, Fallon and Wells Middle
schools, and Dublin High School.
Non-Profit Assistance Projects: Approximately 60 volunteers assisted at Easter Seals
Kaleidoscope School, School of Imagination and the East Bay SPCA to help with window
cleaning, weeding, sweeping, gardening, dusting and vacuuming.
City Park Projects: Approximately 385 volunteers assisted with beautification and clean-up
projects at various park locations within the City. For example, many volunteers assisted in
wood chip spreading along the Iron Horse Trail and at Dougherty Dog Park, planting and
mulching at Positano Hills Park, Emerald Glen Park and the Library. There were 64 trees
planted at Emerald Glen, restrooms and signs were painted at Kolb and Mape parks, and there
were multiple projects done at the Heritage Center and Historic Park, including the cemetery.

City Creek Cleanups: Approximately 45 volunteers picked up litter at South San Ramon Creek
and Tassajara Creek. Approximately six to eight garbage bags of trash were removed from
these two creeks.
Food Drive: This year, Dublin Pride Week included a Food Drive organized by Pride Week
Committee members and City staff. Collection bins were set up at the two Safeway grocery
stores to collect non-perishable food items on Saturday, April 30. All food collected was donated
to the Dublin Children’s Emergency Food Bank.
Volunteer Fair: This year, a Volunteer Fair was added to the Dublin Pride Volunteer Day
schedule from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Basketball Courts when volunteers were returning
from their projects. The Dublin Pride Committee thought it could be a beneficial addition to the
Volunteer event. There were eight agencies that participated. Staff and the Dublin Pride
Committee thought the Volunteer Fair was a good addition to the day.
Sustainable Citizen Workshop
On Wednesday, May 4 from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm, residents learned about how to reduce their
consumption of waste, energy, water and more at a workshop focused on “Sustainable in 10” –
10 actions that cost no money, create cost savings and reduce your environmental footprint.
Household Hazardous Waste Event
The City sponsored another successful household hazardous waste (HHW) drop off event,
which was managed by Amador Valley Industries and held at the MicroDental parking lot on
Arnold Drive on Saturday, May 7. The City’s annual household hazardous waste event ensures
that materials such as paint, used oil, batteries, pesticides and other harmful chemicals are
disposed of properly. In total, there were 505 residents that participated with approximately 607
bags of compost given away. This is the sixth year in a row that all of the HHW appointments
have been filled.
2016 Dublin Pride Week Committee
At the forefront of this year’s activities was the Dublin Pride Week Committee. The Committee
comes together each year to plan and organize Pride Week activities. This year, the Committee
was made up of two council members, various community members and organizational
