Proclamation in Recognition of United Against Hate Week (November 17-
23, 2019)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will consider proclaiming the week of November 17-23, 2019 as United
Against Hate Week.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Proclaim the week of November 17-23, 2019 as United Against Hate Week and direct
staff to distribute the proclamation to representatives from United Against Hate Week.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
DESCRIPTION:
United Against Hate Week is a campaign bringing together municipalities, school
districts, and civic organizations to establish a network of support and resources so
communities can respond to and prevent hate, foster inclusion, and promote equity for
all. This initiative began in 2018 following a successful 2017 Berkeley poster campaign
which residents, businesses, and government organizations publicly displayed
“Berkeley stands united against hate” posters in response to months of various hate
groups protesting in Berkeley and throughout the country.
By participating in the campaign, the City will make a com mitment to make everyone
feel safe and supported. Additionally, the City will display and distribute “Dublin Stands
United Against Hate” posters at City facilities.

A PROCLAMATION OF THE
CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA
“UNITED AGAINST HATE WEEK NOVEMBER 17-23, 2019”
WHEREAS, the United States is a nation of immigrants, whose strength comes from its diversity; and
WHEREAS, the Constitution of the United States confers equality on all individuals, regardless of race, gender, orientation,
religion, or political beliefs; and
WHEREAS, deep divisions within our country are the result of extreme ideology, further strengthening a cycle of mistrust and
suspicion fueled by fear, anxiety, and insecurity; and
WHEREAS, the number of hate crimes across the United States has increased dramatically over the past couple of years; and
WHEREAS, the City of Dublin stands strongly in support of our diverse community, honoring and protecting every individual
regardless of race, creed, color, gender, religion, ethnicity, nationality, orientation, or identity; and
WHEREAS, education, compassion, and cooperation are key to unlocking understanding and embracing differences between
people; and
WHEREAS, the City of Dublin seeks to join other communities around the state in recognizing United Against Hate Week as
an important step in bridging divisions as well as strengthening our communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Dublin hereby proclaim the week of November
17-23 as “United Against Hate Week” and recognizes that it is an important step in bridging divisions and healing
communities.
