I am disappointed that Dublin City Hall has opened the door to build more condos at the Promenade, and I am gravely concerned that it is about to do the same thing at the DiManto parcel between Dublin Ranch Villages and the Waterford Plaza. If approved, this land use conversion will be a classic "bait and switch" scheme made possible by Dublin City Hall. For ten years, new East Dublin residents in the tens of thousands have been told that the Promenade would be an upscale shopping destination to rival San Jose's Santana Row. The retail on the DiManto parcel between Dublin Ranch Villages and the Waterford Plaza was supposed to be part of that grand plan. Now that everyone has already bought or rented homes in and around Dublin Ranch Villages based on that promise, the City of Dublin is trying to shoehorn more condos into an area already saturated with high-density housing. The prospect of more high-density condos instead of the upscale shopping center promised to residents could not have come at a worse time. Property values have cratered over the past few years. Scrapping the Promenade and the DiManto commercial project in favor of additional high-density condos beyond the 1,400 units already built as part of the Dublin Ranch Villages will further reduce the value of my home. Even worse, the loss of a shopping &dining district within easy walking distance of thousands of residents will seriously degrade the quality of life that all of us were seeking when we purchased in the Dublin Ranch Villages. While we are unable to attend this evening, we do want to register our disagreement with the changes proposed. We recently moved into our new home in the Sorrento Community at Dublin Ranch, adjacent to the parcels in question. We were attracted by the development plan that called for mixed use residential and commercial, especially neighborhood commercial. Like many of our neighborhoods, we strongly support the vision of a mixed use walkable community here on the east side of Dublin. We are desperately short of small and large shops, restaurants, gas stations, and other amenities and services. With the projects already under construction here, the population in this area is going to continue to boom. We strongly urge the city of Dublin and our elected officials to hold to the original vision for mixed use development, and lower densities to reduce congestion. Dublin will be better off in the long run if this is an attractive, walkable, livable community where people want to live and invest. This is certainly why we chose to move here.
