STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Costs associated with the 2016 Decorate Dublin Holiday Contest are included in the
Fiscal Year 2016-2017 budget.
DESCRIPTION:
In 2011, the City partnered with the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and launched
“Discover Dublin for the Holidays,” a social media-based campaign to encourage and
increase shopping throughout the City of Dublin during the busiest retail season of the
year. In 2015, the campaign was rebrande d as “Discover Dublin CA” and expanded into
a year-round effort to promote Dublin-based businesses more frequently.
At the July 19, 2016 City Council meeting, a resident expressed the desire to promote
holiday decorations in Dublin. To raise awareness of “Discover Dublin CA” and to
encourage seasonal decorations, the City of Dublin, in collaboration with the Dublin
Chamber of Commerce, has created the “Decorate Dublin” Holiday Contest. The free
contest seeks to elevate the festive aesthetic in Dublin’s re tail areas during the busy
holiday shopping season, to encourage Dublin residents to shop locally, and to promote
local Dublin businesses to a broader audience through participation in the contest.

The City is partnering with the Alameda County Small Busi ness Development Center
(ACSBDC) to host a Dublin workshop on how to create effective window displays to
promote sales. The contest will occur in late November to encourage displays be
prepared in time for the “Small Business Saturday” promotion which occu rs the
Saturday after Thanksgiving. Judging, which will be conducted by a small panel, will
take place November 28 through December 7. Contest participants will be judged on
decoration of the exterior decorations on their storefront, including decorations in
windows that are visible from the exterior. There will also be a category for interior
decorations.
Additionally, the City hopes to use the City’s website to conduct a poll and gather
community feedback on registered decorations, which will be used to select a “People’s
Choice” award. Contest winners will be recognized at a future City Council meeting.
Following the contest, the Chamber and City staff will review the program’s
effectiveness in reaching its goals.
