SUBJECT:
Events Ad Hoc Subcommittee Report on Ping Pong
Prepared by: Liz Elliott, Recreation Coordinator
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Senior Center Advisory Committee will receive a report from the Events Ad-Hoc
Subcommittee (Subcommittee) on the Subcommittee’s research and recommendations
regarding a one-day ping pong tourname nt, will consider implementing such a
tournament at the Dublin Senior Center.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Receive the report and approve the implementation of a one -day ping pong tournament
at the Dublin Senior Center.
DESCRIPTION:
At the request of the Senior Center Advisory Committee (Committee), t he Events Ad-
Hoc Subcommittee (Subcommittee) has been meeting and conducting research to
explore the possibility of hosting a ping pong tournament at the Dublin Senior Center.
The Subcommittee surveyed nine local Senior Centers including Castro Valley,
Danville, Dublin, Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, Pleasanton, San Ramon, and Walnut
Creek. The following questions were presented:
• What day/time of the week brings in the most participants?
• Do you offer ping pong on Saturdays?
• What time of day do you offer ping pong?
• How many hours per day/week do you offer ping pong?
• Will a tournament in spring conflict with any large events at your center?
• What is the average attendance?
• What is the cost/drop-in fee per participant?
Six of the senior centers offer ping pong drop-in programs. Most of these have two to
three ping pong tables, with Hayward Senior Center offering four tables. Fees range
from free to $1.50, $2.00, $3.00, and $15.00 per day. Three senior centers surveyed
had no ping pong tables or program.
6.2
Packet Pg. 10
Highlights from the busiest centers:
• Hayward – Ping pong held 11:00am to 4:00pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Friday; 30-40 players in attendance
• Fremont – Ping pong held 1:30pm to 4:30pm Tuesday-Friday; 11-15 players in
attendance
• Dublin – Busiest ping pong day is Saturday; 20 people in attendance
• Castro Valley – Hosts “Sizzling Summer Tournament.” The event cost is $5.00
per person and includes drawing prizes and food. The event is limited to 26
players, and players are matched up based on skill level.
Subcommittee Recommendation:
Based on the interest displayed in other ping pong programs for a tournament, and
similar successful events including the “Sizzling Summer Tournament”, the
Subcommittee recommends that the Dublin Senior Center host a ping pong tournament,
and name it “Battle of the Bay”.
Possible dates are the first or last Saturday in April, the first or third Saturday in May, or
the first, second, or fourth Saturday in June, so as not to con flict with holidays or large
events. The event would take place from approximately 9 :00am to 1:00pm depending
on the number of teams and length of matches.
Limiting the event to 28 participants is ideal to ensure the tournament is completed in
one day. The tournament format would feature 10-minute timed matches, beginning
and advanced levels, and singles and doubles categories.
The Subcommittee proposes a $15 .00 entry fee to participate in the tournament which
would cover the cost of all expenses, including the cost of prizes for winners in beginner
and advanced levels. Other small miscellaneous expenses include the cost of snacks,
flyers, and new ping pong balls. Additional staffing costs would not be required as the
tournament would take place during regular facility hours when Staff is present.
Current ping pong players that utilize the tables at the Dublin Senior Center have
offered their help in organizing the tournament.
Staff recommend that the Committee review and provide feedback on the E vents Ad-
Hoc Subcommittee report and approve a one-day ping pong tournament at the Dublin
Senior Center.
