STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Present the commendation. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. DESCRIPTION: The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is celebrating its 70th anniversary as one of the nation's leading applied science and research institutions, with world class contributions in national security, supercomputing, energy research, high energy density physics, engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, and biotechnology. The Livermore Lab Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works with the LLNL to provide outreach programs for students of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and internships and fellowship programs at collegiate levels. The City Council will recognize the LLNL and the Foundation for continuing to expand the Lab's reach, impact, and opportunities in the advancement of science and technology, providing outstanding science and research for seven decades, with strong leaders dedicated to our nation's best interests. ATTACHMENTS: 1) Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's 70th Anniversary Commendation Page 2 of 2 13 Attachment I A COMMENDATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA Lawrence Livermore Laboratory — 7oth Anniversary WHEREAS, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (the Lab) was founded September 2, 1952 in Livermore, California, and is managed by Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration; and WHEREAS, for more than 7o years the Lab has served as one of the nation's leading applied science and research institutions, with world class contributions in national security, supercomputing, energy research, high energy density physics, engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, and biotechnology; and WHEREAS, these accomplishments are now setting the stage for even greater opportunities ahead, with the Lab continuing to demonstrate how to make the 'impossible possible'; and WHEREAS, the Livermore Lab Foundation is a 5o1c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting science in the national interest as well as the development of philanthropic investments and public private partnerships at the Lab; and WHEREAS, since the Foundation's inception in 2016, it has strived to open the door to the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) students by accelerating outreach programs for high school students and implementing Lab internships and fellowship programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, impacting more than 2,30o students nationwide and creating a strong alumni network and pool of future Lab leaders; and WHEREAS, the Foundation's fundamental research investments, via private philanthropic contributions in neurodegenerative diseases and climate resiliency, have also expanded the Lab's reach, impact, and opportunities in the advancement of science and technology; and WHEREAS, both the Foundation and the Lab continue to add to this important legacy by providing an historic glimpse in how the Lab has served at the nexus of outstanding science and research for seven decades, with strong leaders dedicated to our nation's best interests. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Dublin City Council does hereby commend the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, including all current and former employees, on this 8th day of September 2022, for 7o years of science and research excellence on behalf of the nation. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Livermore Lab Foundation is also commended in its efforts as a private philanthropic partner in providing an opportunity for all in our community to embrace the idea that 'science does matter.'
