HomeMy WebLinkAbout3.4 Recognition of Outgoing Alameda County Sheriff Gregory AhernCELEBRATING STAFF REPORT CITY COUNCIL DUBLIN CALIFORNIA Agenda Item 3.4 DATE: December 20, 2022 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers FROM: Linda Smith, City Manager SU B.ECT : Recognition of Outgoing Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern Prepared by: Marsha Moore, MMC, City Clerk EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council will present a commendation to outgoing Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern, in appreciation of his dedicated service to the County of Alameda and City of Dublin. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Present the commendation. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. DESCRIPTION: Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern started his career with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy Sheriff in 1980. In 2007, he was sworn in as the 22nd Sheriff of Alameda County. Sheriff Ahern spent the early years in his career serving with Dublin Police Services as a Deputy Sheriff and later as a Patrol Watch Sergeant. During his career, Sheriff Ahern has been involved in the implementation of many programs including the Youth and Family Services Bureau, Drug Education and Enforcement programs, Cold Case DNA Unit, Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Unit, and was a coordinator of the Strategic Planning process for the future health of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. Under Sheriff Ahern's leadership, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office has provided quality service to keep the communities of Alameda County and the City of Dublin safe. The City Council will recognize Sheriff Ahern as he finishes his service as the Alameda County Sheriff. Page 1 of 2 13 STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE: None. ATTACHMENTS: 1) Commendation in Recognition of Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern Page 2 of 2 14 Attachment I A COMMENDATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern WHEREAS, Sheriff Gregory Ahern started his career with the Alameda County Sheriffs Office as a Deputy Sheriff in 198o and was sworn in as the 22nd Sheriff of Alameda County in 2007; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Ahern was one of the first officers to serve the City of Dublin through Alameda County Sheriffs Office in 1982 when Dublin became incorporated; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Ahern has been actively involved in the development and implementation of programs that have been beneficial to the residents of Alameda County, including the Youth and Family Services Bureau, Drug Education and Enforcement programs, Cold Case DNA Unit, D.U.I. Enforcement Unit, and the coordinator of the Strategic Planning process for the future health of the organization; and WHEREAS, the Urban Shield tactical training exercises were initiated by Sheriff Ahern in order to provide training to several thousand first responders each year in order to test the skills, tactics, and equipment of the participating tactical teams as well as the first responders' ability to coordinate and sustain law enforcement, medical, and emergency services in event of a large-scale attack or natural disaster; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Ahern has been involved in two major cases in Dublin regarding Ilene Misheloff in 1989 and Deputy John Monego, in 1998; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin applauds Sheriff Ahern's impactful work providing quality service to keep the communities of the Alameda County, and particularly the City of Dublin, safe. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Dublin City Council does hereby commend Sheriff Gregory Ahern on this 2orh day of December 2022, for his 42 years of service in Dublin, Alameda County, California, and the United States.
